Sophie Bathsheba Thatcher (born October 18, 2000) is an American actress. Her film roles include the horror films The Boogeyman (2023), Heretic (2024), and Companion (2025) establishing herself as a scream queen. Her television projects include the Showtime psychological drama series Yellowjackets (2021–present) and the Star Wars miniseries The Book of Boba Fett (2022).
Sophie Bathsheba Thatcher was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 18, 2000. [1] She attended Evanston Township High School. [2] [3] She was raised in a Mormon household, but has since left the church. When speaking about the church, Thatcher has said "It was hard growing up Mormon," following up with "I don’t think it’s evil, I just don’t think it’s right for me. But as a kid it just made me so angry. Working was a good way to get out of going to church." [4] She has a brother named Alexander, an older sister named Emma, and an identical twin sister named Ellie. [3] [5] [6] She has described her family as musical, having sung in a church choir while her mother played piano. [7] She grew up singing and started acting when she was four years old. She went to a performing arts school for musical theatre, and her on-camera experience led her to pursue acting more than singing. [8]
Thatcher began her career with a guest role in the police procedural series Chicago P.D. (2016), one of the many entries in the widely known Chicago franchise. The same year, she made another guest appearance in Fox's supernatural horror television series The Exorcist , where she played a younger version of Regan MacNeil. Before that she starred in a 2015 short film called Growing Strong. [9]
In 2018, Thatcher made her big screen debut in the science fiction film Prospect , co-starring Pedro Pascal. [10] The film tells the story of a teenage girl and her father (played by Jay Duplass), who travel to an alien moon with a contract to mine gems in the moon's poisonous forest. For her performance, she received mostly positive reviews, with Peter Debruge of Variety describing her as "a fresh face who tricks us into assuming she's just a callow teen, when in fact, she proves to be the film's toughest character". [11]
The following year, she appeared in Noble Jones' directorial debut The Tomorrow Man . During this time, Thatcher landed the role of Natalie in Yellowjackets . Regarding the process, creator Bart Nickerson said the casting department was searching for "someone who was really free-spirited and unique who could play both a sort of wildness and a vulnerability." Though most of the auditions were held in-person, Thatcher submitted a self-recorded audition tape and was cast as Natalie before Juliette Lewis, who portrays the character's adult counterpart. [12] The pilot episode was greenlit in September and shot in Los Angeles in November 2019. [13]
In 2020, Thatcher starred in When the Streetlights Go On , a short-form streaming series directed by Rebecca Thomas. The series debuted on Quibi on April 6. [14] In November 2020, Thatcher was rumoured to be joining the Star Wars franchise but it was unknown in which series she would appear. [15] In December 2020, Showtime gave Yellowjackets a series order; [16] it premiered in November 2021 to rave reviews and became the second-most streamed series in Showtime's history behind Dexter: New Blood . [17]
Following months of speculation, Thatcher was confirmed to be appearing in The Book of Boba Fett . [18] She starred as Drash, the leader of a group of cyborgs who work for Boba Fett. She's listed as an executive producer on the 2022 film Provo directed by her older sister Emma. In March of that year she appeared in the music video for rock band Pavement's single "Harness Your Hopes." [19] Thatcher next appeared alongside Chris Messina and David Dastmalchian in the horror film The Boogeyman , based on the Stephen King short story of the same name and released in theatres on June 2, 2023. [20] [21]
Thatcher is an experimental music artist. Her debut EP, Pivot & Scrape, was released in October 2024 and was preceded with two singles. [22] An ex-Mormon herself, she played a Mormon missionary in the horror film Heretic (2024), for which she recorded and released a cover rendition of Bob Dylan's song "Knockin' on Heaven's Door". [23] She then starred alongside Jack Quaid in the science fiction dark comedy thriller film Companion (2025). [24]
In February 2025, it was announced that Thatcher was in talks to star opposite Mark Eydelshteyn in the second season of Amazon Prime Video's spy series Mr. & Mrs. Smith . [25]
Thatcher previously lived in the Sherman Oaks and Silver Lake neighbourhoods of Los Angeles. As of 2025 [update] , she lives in the Nichols Canyon neighbourhood of Los Angeles with her boyfriend Austin Feinstein, musician and member of the band Slow Hollows. [26] [27]
