Spanish unionism

Spanish unionism is a term used mainly by the Basque nationalism and Catalan independence movements to refer to the political attitude which opposes independence [1] and favours the continuity of the Kingdom of Spain as a single united nation-state.

Observations regarding the use of the Spanish term unionismo español inside Spain do not apply necessarily to the use outside Spain of the same term or translations like Spanish unionism. They can be disconnected, like, on one hand the Spanish term nacionalista, usually applied to Catalan nationalists and never to Spanish nationalists, and on the other hand the term applied to the Francoist faction of the Spanish Civil War in English and many other languages, whereas Spanish sources prefer to not call the Francoists nacionalista, but bando sublevado, meaning 'rebel faction'. [2]

The expression Spanish unionism has been used as early as March 2009 in the context of the Catalan independence movement. [3] An example of its use by Basque nationalism can be found in April 2009. [4]

The adoption of the term unionism into the Spanish context and its loaded usage with negative connotation relates to attempts to draw parallels with the Orange Order of the Unionist movement in Ireland. [5]

Spanish unionism is considered by Basque and Catalan nationalist parties as a political ideology identified by its denial of the exercise of the right of self-determination of the peripheral nationalities of Spain or sometimes by the simple defense of Spain as a nation. [6] Therefore, the label has been applied to parties such as the People's Party, [7] Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) [8] , [9] Union, Progress and Democracy (UPYD) and Citizens-Party of the Citizenry (C's).

Union, Progress and Democracy was a Spanish political party founded in September 2007 and dissolved in December 2020. It was a social-liberal party that rejected any form of nationalism, especially the separatist Basque and Catalan movements. The party was deeply pro-European and wanted the European Union to adopt a federal system without overlap between the European, national and regional governments. It also wanted to replace the State of Autonomies with a much more centralist, albeit still politically decentralized, unitary system as well as substituting a more proportional election law for the current one.

Lehendakari Patxi López announced the parliament's dissolution half a year ahead of schedule as a result of the People's Party (PP) withdrawing their support from his government, prompting Galician president Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who had been scheduling a snap election in Galicia to be held at some point throughout late 2012, to make his decision to have a simultaneous vote.

The election was held simultaneously with a regional election in Galicia. Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu announced that the election would be held one month ahead of schedule, on 25 September 2016, based on the "climate of ungovernability" affecting national politics as a result of the ongoing Spanish government formation negotiations, intending to move the regional election as far away as possible from a possible new general election. This prompted Galician president Alberto Núñez Feijóo to hold the Galician regional election in the same date.

The Nationalist Party of Catalonia is a Catalan nationalist and liberal political party in Catalonia. The party was established on 12 May 2020 by former Catalan European Democratic Party (PDeCAT) coordinator-general Marta Pascal. It held its founding congress on 27 June 2020, under a political manifesto in which they announce their commitment to an agreed referendum as the solution for the issue of Catalan independence.

Emilio Guevara Saleta is a Spanish politician. He served as Deputy General of Álava from 1979 to 1983, the first officeholder since the abolition of the post in 1877. Originally a member of the Basque Nationalist Party, he was expelled from the party in 2002. Since then, he has been an independent politician linked to the Socialist Party of the Basque Country.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Eneko Goia</span> Spanish politician

Eneko Goia Laso is a Spanish politician of the Basque Nationalist Party (EAJ-PNV). He was elected to the City Council of San Sebastián in 2011 as the party's leader, and was elected mayor in 2015. He previously served in the Basque Parliament from 2005 to 2007, and the Deputation of Gipuzkoa from 2007 to 2011.
