Competition climbing is a nascent sport in India. It is governed by the recently formed Federation of Indian Sport Climbing, and was initially administered by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation. [1] In 2024, Rajmohan Pillai and Sushil Malik were elected the president and vice-president of the SCFI. [2] [3]

Bangalore is a hub of competition climbing in India. [4] The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering conducts short term courses in competition climbing. [5]

Indian competition climbers

Deepu Mallesh at rank 81 is the highest-ranked Indian competition climber and the holder of the record in competition speed climbing. [6] Prateeksha Arun, the winner of national titles, took part in the 2023 Asian Games. [7] Shivani Charak has represented the country at the Asian Youth Games and the Asian Games. [8]

Asian Games

India sent a seven-member sport climbing contingent to the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. [9] However, the athletes did not win any podium places. [10] [11]

Speed climbing is a climbing discipline in which speed is the ultimate goal. Speed climbing is done on rocks, walls and poles and is only recommended for highly skilled and experienced climbers.

Dipa Karmakar is an Indian gymnast from Tripura. She is the first female gymnast from India to compete in the Olympics. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, in the vault event final, she finished in 4th place.

Artimes Farshad Yeganeh is an Iranian rock climber who has specialized in both competition climbing, and outdoor sport climbing and bouldering. He has been climbing for 30 years as a professional climber, a member of the Iranian National climbing team for many years, as a route setter in many national, continental, and world cups and championships, and Head Coach of the Iranian National climbing team for 6 years. He also participates in sport climbing and bouldering competitions and is one of the most famous Iranian climbers.

Competition climbing made its Olympic debut at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. Two events were held, one each for men and women. The format controversially consisted of one combined event with three disciplines: lead climbing, speed climbing and bouldering. The medals were determined based on best performance across all three disciplines. This format was previously tested at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics. The Olympic code for sports climbing is CLB.

Miho Nonaka is a Japanese competition climber who specializes in competition bouldering. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics, in Women's combined, winning a silver medal.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mansour Aghaei</span> Iranian rock climber (born 1987)

Mansour Aghaei is an Iranian professional rock climber, specializing in competition climbing, particularly competition lead climbing and competition bouldering. He is currently in charge of the Iran national competition climbing team. He has also been teaching physical education at the University of Tabriz since 2012. In 2002, Aghaei came second in the Asian Youth Championships in Malaysia.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Futaba Ito</span> Japanese climber

Futaba Ito is a Japanese professional rock climber, sport climber and boulderer. She participates in both bouldering and lead climbing competitions. She won the IFSC Climbing Asian Youth Championships in lead and bouldering events in 2016, as well as Bouldering Japan Cup in 2017. She participated in combined and speed events at the 2018 Asian Games.

Mountaineering Ireland is the representative association for hikers and mountaineers on the island of Ireland. It is recognized by both Sport Ireland, the Irish authority for sport, and Sport Northern Ireland, the corresponding authority of the Government of Northern Ireland, thus operating across the island of Ireland. The association has been an International Climbing and Mountaineering Federation (UIAA) member since 2004, as well as a member of other federations. The association is also a publisher of walking and climbing guides.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Yoshiyuki Ogata</span> Japanese rock climber (born 1998)

Yoshiyuki Ogata is a Japanese professional competition climber and boulderer. He has won multiple medals in competition bouldering at IFSC Climbing World Cup events, including gold medals at Vail in 2019 and at Innsbruck in 2021. Ogata won the overall IFSC Men's Bouldering title for the 2021 and 2022 seasons and finished third overall in 2019.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sport climbing at the 2024 Summer Olympics</span> 2024 Paris Olympic event

Competition climbing at the 2024 Summer Olympics is scheduled to run from 5 to 10 August at Le Bourget Sport Climbing Venue in Saint-Denis, returning to the program for the second time since the sport's official debut three years earlier in Tokyo 2020. The total number of medal events will double from two in the previous edition, separating the boulder-and-lead tandem from the speed format. Furthermore, Paris 2024 will witness a significant rise in the number of sport climbers competing contrary to Tokyo 2020, expanding the roster size from 40 to 68.

In qualifying for the 2024 Summer Olympics, a total of 68 climbers, with an equal distribution between men and women, will compete across two separate competition climbing disciplines at these Games for the first time, namely: a unique competition bouldering-and-competition lead climbing combined event, and a separate competition speed climbing event.
