Taekwondo is one of the most popular and practiced martial arts in India. [1] [2] [3] It is characterized by punching and kicking techniques, with emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping spinning kicks, and fast kicking techniques. The literal translation for tae kwon do is "kicking," "punching," and "the art or way of." [4]
Master Puran Andrew Gurung introduced taekwondo to India after returning from Hong Kong to India. He studied taekwondo under Korean Great Grand Master Lee Pyung Pal from 1969 to 1974. Since 1974 he has been promoting Taekwondo after earning his 2nd Dan under Great Grand Master Lee Pyung Pal. He initially started taekwondo classes in Kalimpong, Darjeeling and Sikkim. Later he expanded his trainings to Kolkata, southern, northeast and northern parts of India. He traveled frequently to every part of India until 1984. [5] He has been conferred the title of "Father of Taekwondo in India" by official taekwondo hall of fame USA.
Taekwondo introduced to India around 1975 and one of earliest taekwondo instructors in India was Jimmy R. Jagtiani, 8th Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo who began teaching in 1975. [6] On 2 August 1976 the Taekwondo Federation of India (TFI) was formed and established as a National Body of Taekwondo in India. [7]
The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) accorded affiliation to the Taekwondo Federation of India in 1978, the Asian Taekwondo Union (ATU) in 1982, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in 1985 and the South Asian Taekwondo Federation (SATF) in 1994 respectively. The Department of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India also granted recognition to Taekwondo Federation of India as an apex judicial and autonomous national body of taekwondo in India in 1988.
Grand Master Kiranpal, an international referee, has been working for Indian taekwondo since 1988, when for the first time, taekwondo was demonstrated at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Atul Pangotra is also an international referee and coach who started his sports journey in 1988. At the 2020 Summer Paralympics, he qualified in the top 50 officials. [8] While, Sarbjeet Singh is the first ever referee from India to officiate in the 2018 World Taekwondo Grand Prix Series and also qualified among top 50 Officials for 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. [9]
Latika Bhandari is an Indian taekwondo practitioner. As of June 2021, she is the top-ranked female taekwondo practitioner in India. She was awarded by the Madhya Pradesh Highest Sports award Vikram Award in 2012. [10] [11] [12]
Surendra Bhandari won India's first medal in Taekwondo by clinching a bronze in the flyweight (58-kg) category in the 14th Asian Games. [13] [14]
Danish Manzoor is a Taekwondo athlete from Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir. He has represented India in World Taekwondo Octagon Diamond G4 Olympic ranking Taekwondo Championship 2023 held at Gangwon, South Korea. In 2022, Danish became the Fit India Ambassador. [15] [16] [17]
Rodali usually represents the country in the +73 kg weight category and had brought various laurels to the country. She had represented India in the World Taekwondo Championships in Korea in June 2017 and won gold at the 35th National Senior Kyorugi and 8th National Senior Pumche Taekwondo Championships held in Visakhapatnam. [18] Represented India in Asian Games 2018 [19] [20]
Kashish represented India in the 2018 Asian Games where she crashed out in the quarterfinals. She has bagged medals at various international events like, Malaysia Open G1 Tournament, Asian Games Invitation Tournament, President Cup, Fujairah Open 2018 and Israel Open 2018. [21] [22]
Navjeet Mann is a Taekwondoin based out of Bangalore and has represented India at various international events including the Asian Games 2018, World Championships 2017 and Asian Championship in the year 2016 and 2018. Navjeet’s brightest moment under the sun though came in the year 2016 when he bagged a gold medal in the 2016 South Asian Games. [23] [24]
Atul Raghav is a Taekwondoin based out of Ghaziabad and has represented India at various national and international events. Atul's brightest moment under the sun though came in the year 2020 when he bagged a bronze medal in the 2020 G-2 Fujairah Dubai. Currently, he is the brand ambassador of Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation. [25] [26] [27]
Aman Kumar Kadyan is a Taekwondoin based out of Haryana and has represented India at various national and international events. He competes in -54 kg and currently holds -18 Rank in the world. [28]

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and combat sport involving punching and kicking techniques. The word Taekwondo can be translated as tae, kwon, and do. In addition to its five tenets of courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit, the sport requires three physical skills: poomsae (품새), kyorugi (겨루기) and gyeokpa (격파).
Tang Soo Do is a Korean martial art based on karate and can include fighting principles from taekkyeon, subak, as well as northern Chinese martial arts. From its beginnings in 1944 to today, Tang Soo Do is used by some Kwans to identify the traditional Korean fusion of fighting styles. In the mid 1950s, it became the basis for the martial art taekwondo when the Korean Nine Kwans united.
The 1995 Southeast Asian Games, officially known as the 18th Southeast Asian Games, Chiang Mai, 1995, was a Southeast Asian multi-sport event held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from 9 to 17 December 1995. It was the first time that a non-capital city hosted the biennial sports event. Chiang Mai is the second Thai city to host the Southeast Asian Games after Bangkok. The games were opened and closed by Vajiralongkorn, the then-Crown Prince of Thailand, making him the first person as non-head of state to open the SEA Games. With the return of Cambodia, all ten members of the federation were present to compete in the SEA Games for the first time.
The event of Taekwondo competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics was held in Beijing. It was held between August 20th and August 23rd at the Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium. The event consisted of various athletes, there were 128 Taekwondo practitioners, consisting of 64 men and 64 women. These athletes competed in 8 events, where for the first time ever, two bronze medals were awarded per event.

Mitchell Bobrow is a martial arts fighter who was trained by Ki Whang Kim in the early 1960s. Bobrow was known for his continuous attacks using a unique combination of kicks, punches, and sweeps including his Trademark Jump Back Kick that scored on his opponents with either leg.

Prachi Tehlan is an Indian actress and former netball and basketball player. Prachi is the former captain of the India national netball team which represented India in the 2010 Commonwealth Games and in other major Asian Championships in 2010-11. Under her captaincy, the Indian team won its first medal in 2011 South Asian Beach Games. She has been given the title of “Queen of The Court” by The Times of India & “Lass of The Rings” by The Indian Express. She is the brand ambassador of Netball Development Trust India for 2011-2017.

Mexico competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This was the nation's twenty-second appearance at the Olympics since its debut in 1900. Comité Olímpico Mexicano sent a total of 102 athletes to the Games, 64 men and 38 women, to compete in 23 sports. Men's football was the only team sport in which Mexico was represented at these Olympic Games. There was only a single competitor in badminton, sprint canoeing, and table tennis.

İrem Yaman is a Turkish retired taekwondo athlete. He is a twice world champion, competing in the lightweight division, and an amateur kickboxer. In 2021, she retired from the taekwondo.

Puran Andrew Gurung is an Indian Taekwondo practitioner and coach. He is a 9th dan Taekwondo professional and is known for establishing Taekwondo in India. Gurung founded his first Taekwondo gymnasium at Kalimpong in 1974 and by 1982 had become the most popular Taekwondo instructor in India. He established a vast chain of academies across the nation, and for his efforts towards promoting Taekwondo in India he was acknowledged by the then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He was requested to train Indian National Congress' Seva Dal cadets. In 1983, Mrs. Gandhi asked him to join INC, which he readily accepted, where he is still serves as the General Secretary (Organiser) of the Seva Dal.
Iran competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Originally scheduled to take place during the summer of 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. She has also won bronze medals twice at the World Championship, is a winner of the Islamic Solidarity Games, and a silver medalist at the Summer Asian Games.
Aman Kadyan is an India Taekwondo athlete. He is currently World Rank 18th in the W-54 kg in Russian Open 2021. He has represented India at various national and international events. Aman Kumar Kadyan told in an interview to Khabar Satta news website that his dream is to represent India in the Olympics and bring gold medal in Taekwondo.
