Bodybuilding in India is organized and the national federation is internationally recognised. Bodybuilders from the country have competed in international events.

History

In 2013, the Kazakhstani Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation hosted the Asian Championship in Almaty at the Baluan Sholak Sport Palace. At least one Indian participated in the competition. [1]

Culture

In India, bodybuilders appear on a number of billboards advertising supplements near the offices of the National Institute of Sports. [2]
The overall fitness industry in India has seen a boom over the past two decades. From personal training to sports nutrition, there has been a tremendous increase in general awareness about fitness related topics.

International exposure

The international apex body for strength sports, World Strongmen Federation (WSF), has officially recognised Indian participation into the WSF World Cup 2016. [3] The related launch of India's first television strength reality show, 'Strongest Indian', was announced in April, 2015. The winner of the show will represent India at the next World Strongman Federation World Cup competition. [4] The format of the show is conceptualised by Kaizzad Capadia, [5] co-founder and director of K11 Fitness Academy, [6] and celebrity fitness expert. Kaizzad will personally train the winner for the international competition along with mentors who are ex-Strongman winners.

Governance

The country has a national organization, the Indian Body Building and Fitness Federation (IBFF), that is recognized by the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness as a national federation, representing the country's bodybuilding community. [7] The national federation is a member of the Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation. [8]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Eugen Sandow</span> Prussian bodybuilder (1867–1925)

Eugen Sandow was a German bodybuilder and showman from Prussia. Born in Königsberg, Sandow became interested in bodybuilding at the age of ten during a visit to Italy. After a spell in the circus, Sandow studied under strongman Ludwig Durlacher in the late 1880s. On Durlacher's recommendation, he began entering strongman competitions, performing in matches against leading figures in the sport such as Charles Sampson, Frank Bienkowski, and Henry McCann. In 1901 he organised what is believed to be the world's first major bodybuilding competition. Set in London's Royal Albert Hall, Sandow judged the event alongside author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and athlete/sculptor Charles Lawes-Wittewronge.

The International Federation of BodyBuilding and Fitness (IFBB), headquartered in Las Rozas (Madrid), is an international professional sports governing body for bodybuilding and fitness that oversees many of the sport's major international events, notably the World and Continental Championships.

In the 19th century, the term strongman referred to an exhibitor of strength or similar circus performers who performed feats of strength. Today, strength athletics, also known as strongman competitions, are composed of a variety of events in which competitors have to move the highest weights possible, the winner being the one having the highest tally across all events.

Female bodybuilding is the female component of competitive bodybuilding. It began in the late 1970s, when women began to take part in bodybuilding competitions.

The World Strongman Cup Federation ("WSCF") was a worldwide organisation within strength athletics that claimed to be the sport's organising body with the aim of making "the Strongman Sport more popular and accessible for a wide range of the people." Its motto was "be strong". It was also a charity. The Federation organised the World Strongman Cup one of the main competitions in the field of strength athletics boasting participation from some of the foremost strongmen around the globe. It was a separate competition from the World's Strongest Man, the Strongman Super Series and the IFSA World Championship). It has since been replaced by the World Strongman Federation's World Cup.

The "World Strongman" International Union of associations and clubs ("WSM") is a worldwide organization within strength athletics, founded by Vlad Redkin, a prominent figure in the history of the International Federation of Strength Athletes and World Strongman Cup Federation. The WSF has organised a number of grand prix events and national championships featuring some of the world's leading strength athletes including 5 time World's Strongest Man winner Mariusz Pudzianowski, Brian Shaw, Mikhail Koklyaev, Krzysztof Radzikowski, Tarmo Mitt, Kevin Nee, Stefan Solvi Petursson, Laurence Shahlaei and Mark Felix. The WSF's flagship programme is the WSF World Cup.

Weightlifting or weight lifting generally refers to physical exercises and sports in which people lift weights, often in the form of dumbbells or barbells. People engage in weightlifting for a variety of different reasons. These can include: developing physical strength; promoting health and fitness; competing in weightlifting sports; and developing a muscular and aesthetic physique.

Bodybuilding in the United States traces its early history to the 1860s when it was based on the east coast. By the 1940s, it had arrived in Hawaii. In the same period, the country was involved with the early internationalization of the sport. The sport had a golden age during the 1960s and 1970s when much of the activity was taking place on the west coast. Bodybuilding for women began to take off during the 1970s. A number of changes took place in the 1980s.

Bodybuilding in Iran is organized and the national federation is internationally recognised. Bodybuilders from the country have competed in international events. There are gyms for bodybuilding in Iran.

Bodybuilding in Burma has a long history, dating back to the 1936 Summer Olympics. Burmese bodybuilders were competing internationally for the country in 2014. Myanmar Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation is the national governing body.

Bodybuilding in Thailand includes Thai competitors representing their country at international events. Thai Bodybuilding Federation is the sport's national governing body.

Uzbekistan Bodybuilding and Fitness Fedeartion is officially recognised by National Olympic Committee of Uzbekistan. The headquarters is located in Tashkent. The Federation is member of Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation (AFBB) and World Bodybuilding & Physique Federation (WBPF). The Federation is responsible for the promotion and growth of the game of bodybuilding in Uzbekistan

Harminder Dulowal is an Indian Vegetarian Bodybuilder from Punjab. He has won the title of Mr Asia and is a WFF Certified International Judge. He is also the President at FIF.
