Icestock is a sport that has become popular in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in India that have a cold climate and is being taken up in the rest of the country as well. [1]

Gulmarg is the hub of icestock in India and hosts two national competitions of icestock each year: the National Icestock Championship [2] [3] and an event in the Khelo India Winter Games. [4] [5]

Aadil Manzoor Peer is the captain of the Indian national icestock team. [6] He has represented the country in several international competitions. [7] [8]

Zerhan Ashaiq won three gold medals in addition to Silver and a bronze medal at the 2024 National Icestock Championship. [9] Faheem Masood Shah is another upcoming icestock player in Jammu and Kashmir. [10] Zafeera Zahoor is another young player who has been successful at the national level. [11]

The western state of Gujarat has been successful in icestock, despite having a warm climate. [12] Two players from Gujarat took part in the 14th Icestock World Championship in Italy in 2022. [13] A speech and hearing-impaired tribal woman from Gujarat won a bronze medal at the 9th Ice Stock National Championship in 2023. [14] [15]

The Commonwealth Winter Games was a multi-sport event comprising winter sports, last held in 1966. Three editions of the Games have been staged. The Winter Games were designed as a counterbalance to the Commonwealth Games, which focuses on summer sports, to accompany the Winter Olympics and Summer Olympic Games.

Masud Choudhary was an Indian educator, social reformer, thinker and an administrator of Jammu and Kashmir union territory. He was the founding Vice Chancellor of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University in Rajouri, J&K. He was also the Chief Patron of the Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust. Choudhary served in the police and retired as the Additional Director of the General Police (IPS) in 2004.

Winter sports are common in India in the Himalayan areas. Ski tournaments take place every winter in Gulmarg, Kashmir and Manali. Winter sports are generally more common in the northern states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. Skiing, snow rugby, snow cycling and snow football are few of the common sports played in India. Skiing is more popular although India has taken part in Luge in Winter Olympics since 1998. The Bandy Federation of India is headquarters are in Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. Luge is practiced in a big way by the mountain residents in an improvised form called 'Reri'.

Ice hockey is a sport that is gaining popularity in India. Ice hockey is played mostly in places like Ladakh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir in the north of India, where cold weather occurs and the game can be played outdoors. Ice hockey enthusiasts from other places in the country, as well as expatriates from abroad, head to places like Ladakh for the experience of playing in some of the highest elevated rinks in the world. There are a few artificial indoor ice skating rinks in the rest of the country, such as the Doon Ice Rink in Dehradun, which can accommodate ice hockey with an international-sized rink.

The National Winter Games have been held in Gulmarg in 1996, 2004 and 2009. The first Khelo India Winter Games were held in February and March 2020 in Leh and Gulmarg. Jammu and Kashmir won the most gold medals while the Indian Army team came second with 8 gold medals. The second edition of the winter games were also held successfully in Gulmarg in 2020 with Jammu and Kashmir coming first and Karnataka second.

It was decided to hold the first Khelo India Winter Games in 2020 after the success of multiple editions of the Khelo India Youth Games.

India is considered an emerging country in the sport of curling. The country's men's team finished second in the B-Division of the 2022 Pan Continental Curling Championships. India's mixed doubles team also won silver at the 21st Curling Cup World Curling Tour (WCT) Mixed Doubles 2022.
