TapTap is a mobile game-sharing community and third-party game store that originated in China, operated by XD Inc. [1] [2] The platform allows users to download games and engage within the community. [2]

In June 2022, TapTap reached an average of 9 million monthly active users from over 170 countries, including the United States, Japan, Germany, and Italy. [3] [4]

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, game developer miHoYo, and Lilith Mobile are investors of TapTap. In 2020, MiHoYo’s Genshin Impact was distributed on TapTap. [5]

Exclusives

While with similarities to the offering on mainstream app stores such as Google Play and the App Store, TapTap holds exclusives to games such as Torchlight: Infinite and T3 Arena during alpha testing and Valorant Mobile. [6]

TapTap Presents is a Live Show, hosted by TapTap, that first streamed on July 10, 2020, unveiling game-related updates and upcoming mobile games, including Genshin Impact and Torchlight: Infinite. [7] [8]

History

TapTap was created by Yiwan in 2016 with an investment from XD Inc., previously known for peer-to-peer download network VeryCD. [8] [9] In March 2018, TapTap was fined for violating games publishing laws in China, among other companies, and shut down its service for 3 months. [10]

The game is available in several languages such as English, French, Turkish, Italian, German, Simplified Chinese, Peninsular Spanish and both European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. The game was developed and published by EA Mobile and launched in Europe on February 29, 2012 and in North America on March 1, 2012 for iOS and February 6, 2013 for Android. The game was released for Amazon Fire devices in several markets on June 24, 2013.

Ketchapp SARL is a French video game publisher based in Paris, specializing in the mobile games market. Founded in 2014 by brothers Antoine and Michel Morcos, the company first came into the public eye later that year, through its port of the open-source game 2048. Ketchapp has been accused of cloning popular casual games by other developers. When Ketchapp was acquired by Ubisoft in September 2016, the company had more than 700 million downloads across their portfolio of games.

A free-to-play game monetized through gacha game mechanics, Genshin Impact is updated regularly using the games as a service model.

The popularisation of mobile games began as early as 1997 with the introduction of Snake preloaded on Nokia feature phones, demonstrating the practicality of games on these devices. Several mobile device manufacturers included preloaded games in the wake of Snake's success. In 1999, the introduction of the i-mode service in Japan allowed a wide variety of more advanced mobile games to be downloaded onto smartphones, though the service was largely limited to Japan. Honkai: Star Rail  is a role-playing gacha video game developed and published by miHoYo. It is miHoYo's first turn-based game, featuring the main character, who is referred to as the Trailblazer, travelling across planets through the Astral Express to help and connect the worlds while resolving disasters caused by "Stellarons" and other third-parties. The first closed beta test was launched on October 27, 2021. It was publicly released internationally on April 26, 2023, for Windows and mobile devices. Torchlight: Infinite is an action role-playing game and the fourth game in the Torchlight series. It is developed and published by Chinese company XD Inc. for Android, iOS, and Windows. These versions are all cross-platform.

Kamibox is an independent German video game developer founded by Philipp Stollenmayer. Stollenmayer is the sole employee of the company, which creates almost exclusively mobile games. Some of Kamibox's games have received awards for their design, including an Apple Design Award. Kamibox games often have a philosophical element to them, such as see/saw and Sometimes You Die, which explore the concept of death in video games.

Honkai is a video game franchise developed by miHoYo, published by miHoYo in mainland China and worldwide by Cognosphere, d/b/a HoYoverse. Initially led by Cai Haoyu, David Jiang took over as the series producer from 2017.

Liu Wei, commonly known as Da Wei within the gaming community, is a Chinese businessman and video game producer. He is best known as the co-founder and president of the video game company miHoYo.
