Taunggyi is the capital and largest city of Shan State, Myanmar (Burma) and lies on the Thazi-Kyaingtong road at an elevation of 4,712 feet (1,436 m), just north of Shwenyaung and Inle Lake within the Myelat region. Taunggyi is the fifth largest city of Myanmar, although Taunggyi is the capital of Shan State, 45% of population are Pa'O people, and has an estimated population of 380,665 as of 2014. The city is famous for its hot air balloon festival held annually on the full moon day of Tazaungmon.

Moreover, it has been an accociate member of AUN-QA ( ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance) under ASEAN University Network since 25.3.2018. Furthermore, it has obtained ISO 9001:2008 certificate for Quality Management System in 2015 and upgraded to ISO 9001:2015 version in 2018 from Bureau Veritas. There are a total of 33 Technological Universities in Myanmar and Technological University (Hmawbi), Technological University (Thanlyin) and West Yangon Technological University are best engineering schools in Myanmar after Yangon Technological University and Mandalay Technological University.
