The first season of The Voice , the Australian reality talent show, premiered on 15 April 2012 and concluded on 18 June 2012, with Karise Eden being crowned as the winner.^[1] This was the first and only season to have Keith Urban as a coach.

The Voice is an Australian singing competition television series broadcast on Nine, based on the original The Voice of Holland. The show is hosted by Sonia Kruger, who debuted as host during the fifth season, following the departure of Darren McMullen.

Reality television is a genre of television programming that documents supposedly unscripted real-life situations, and often features an otherwise unknown cast of individuals who are typically not professional actors. Reality television exploded as a phenomenon in the late 1990s and early 2000s with the global success of the series Survivor, Idols, and Big Brother. These shows and a number of others became global franchises, spawning local versions in dozens of countries. The genre has various standard tropes, including "confessionals", or interview segments, used by cast members to express their thoughts, which often double as the shows' narration. In competition-based reality shows, there are other common elements, such as one participant being eliminated per episode, a panel of judges, and the concept of immunity from elimination.

Talent show event, television or radio program that focuses on the potential audition of singers, dancers, models and the like

A talent show is an event in which participants perform the arts of singing, dancing, lip-syncing, acting, martial arts, playing an instrument, or other activities to showcase skills. Many talent shows are performances rather than contests, but some are actual contests. In the instance of a contest, participants may be motivated to perform for a reward, trophy, or prize of some kind. For example, a high school might not have many students with any interest in performing in front of the student body for the sole purpose of performing alone and may offer different prizes as an incentive for these students to participate in the contest.

Coaches and hosts

On 29 May 2011, it was reported in The Daily Telegraph that the Nine Network would broadcast The Voice in late 2011.^[2] However, two months later, they reported that the show would now air in early 2012, and that the Nine Network were in talks with signing at least one international artist (especially an American) to lead its panel of coaches on the show, which were rumoured to be Christina Aguilera, George Michael, Usher, Pink and Gwen Stefani.^[3] In September 2011, the Herald Sun reported that the Nine Network were planning to sign Australia's Got Talent judge Dannii Minogue as one of the coaches.^[4] Anthony Callea, Vanessa Amorosi and former Pussycat Dolls member Ashley Roberts all publicly expressed interest in coaching roles,^[5]^[6] however Delta Goodrem, Keith Urban, Seal and Joel Madden were ultimately confirmed as the four coaches for the first season.^[7]

The Nine Network is a major Australian commercial free-to-air television network, that is a division of Nine Entertainment Co. with headquarters in Willoughby, a suburb located on the North Shore of Sydney, Australia. The Nine Network is one of three main free-to-air commercial networks in Australia.

Christina María Aguilera is an American singer, songwriter, actress and television personality. Her work has earned her five Grammy Awards, one Latin Grammy Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She has sold more than 75 million records worldwide, making her one of the world's best-selling music artists. In 2009, she ranked at number 58 on Rolling Stone's list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time, thereby becoming the youngest and the only artist under 30 to be named. Billboard recognized her as the 20th most successful artist of the 2000s, and in 2013, Time included Aguilera on their annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Additionally, Ricki-Lee Coulter (with Seal), Darren Hayes (Goodrem), Megan Washington (Urban) and Benji Madden (with brother Joel) paired up with the coaches as mentors for their contestants.^[8]^[9]

Ricki-Lee Dawn Coulter is an Australian singer, songwriter, television and radio presenter. She was born in Auckland, New Zealand, grew up on the Gold Coast, Queensland and began performing at the age of 15. Coulter rose to fame in 2004 on the second season of Australian Idol and placed seventh in the competition. She subsequently signed with Australian independent label Shock Records, and released her self-titled debut album Ricki-Lee (2005), which produced the top-ten hits "Hell No!" and "Sunshine". Both singles were certified gold by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA). The following year, Coulter became a member of Australian pop girl group Young Divas, before leaving in early 2007 to resume her solo career.

Darren Stanley Hayes is an Australian singer-songwriter, and podcaster. Hayes was the frontman and singer of the pop duo Savage Garden until it disbanded in 2001. Their 1997 album Savage Garden peaked at No. 1 in Australia, No. 2 in United Kingdom and No. 3 in United States. It spawned the singles "I Want You", "To the Moon and Back", and Australian and US No. 1 "Truly Madly Deeply". The duo followed the success of their debut album with Affirmation (1999), which provided additional hits such as US No. 1 "I Knew I Loved You", and Australian No. 3 "The Animal Song". Savage Garden parted ways in 2001. They have sold more than 23 million albums worldwide.

Megan Alexanda Washington is an Australian-based musician and songwriter, who works mononymously as Washington. Originally performing jazz music, her style shifted to indie pop and alternative rock. Since 2006 she sings, plays keyboards, piano and guitar; and later produced her work. In December 2009 Washington won the inaugural Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition for "How to Tame Lions". She released her debut album, I Believe You Liar, which peaked at number three on the ARIA Albums Chart and by end of 2011 received a platinum certificate from ARIA for shipment of 70,000 copies. At the ARIA Music Awards of 2010 she won the Best Female Artist and Breakthrough Artist – Release for I Believe You Liar. Washington's second album, There There, was released in September 2014, which reached number five.

Darren McMullen was announced as the host of the program in January 2012.^[10]^[11] Faustina Agolley was announced as the social media correspondent during the live shows in May 2012.^[12]

Darren McMullen is an Australian television and radio presenter and personality, music journalist and music critic. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and immigrated with his family to Australia at the age of 12. He now lives in Los Angeles, California. He is best known as the host of The Voice Australia, opposite Sonia Kruger, Prior to his career as a presenter, he was a student at Bradfield College and then an advertising executive.

Faustina "Fuzzy" Agolley is an Australian television presenter best known for her role as the host of long-running Australian music program Video Hits on Channel 10. She was also the host of late-night game and gadget review program Cybershack and is a graduate from the University of Melbourne and RMIT University. She previously co-hosted The Voice alongside Darren McMullen.

Filming for the blind auditions stage of the competition began on 19 February 2012 at Fox Studios in Sydney,^[13]^[14] with 121 artists featured in this phase of the selection process.^[15] The first day of filming resulted in hundreds of audience members being turned away from the studio due to overbooking of the event by an external booking agent.^[14]

Week 6: Final (17 June)

The sixth and seventh episodes of the Live Shows, parts one and two of the Live Finale of The Voice Australia, were broadcast on 17 June 2012^[27] and 18 June 2012^[28] consecutively. In part two of the Live Finale, Karise Eden was announced as the winner and won a recording contract with Universal Music Group, a Ford Focus Titanium and a A$100,000 cash prize. Darren Percival was runner-up, finishing in second place, winning a cash prize of A$30,000. Rachael Leahcar came in third place, winning a cash prize of A$20,000 while Sarah De Bono placed fourth, winning a cash prize of A$10,000 .

Voices Reaching Out

The Nine Network announced on 3 July 2012 that a one-off charity concert special, Voices Reaching Out, for The Reach Foundation would be aired. The special was staged at The Palms at Crown complex and hosted by The Voice host Darren McMullen. It featured all four finalists, Karise Eden, Darren Percival, Rachael Leahcar and Sarah De Bono. Contestants Prinnie Stevens, Mahalia Barnes, Adam Martin, Ben Hazlewood, Chris Sebastian, Fatai V, Mitchell Johnson, Brittany Cairns, Kelsie Rimmer, Diana Rouvas, Viktoria Bolonina, Emma Birdsall and Casey Withoos also performed. Singer and Team Keith mentor Megan Washington also performed. Also appearing was The Voice social media correspondent Faustina Agolley, joined by Jules Lund and Jesinta Campbell.^[29] The 90-minute concert was filmed 12 July 2012 and aired 15 July 2012 on the Nine Network.^[30]

Shooting Star is the debut studio album by Australian recording artist Rachael Leahcar, who finished third on the first season of The Voice Australia. The first season of the Australian drama television series Wonderland, began airing on 21 August 2013 on Network Ten. The finale aired on 13 November 2013. The season consisted of 13 episodes and aired on Wednesdays at 8:30pm.

The third season of The Voice, the Australian reality talent show, premiered on 4 May 2014 and concluded on 21 July 2014 with Anja Nissen being crowned the winner. Both Kylie Minogue and will.i.am joined the show this season but left at the end of the season.

[Note2-27] Contestant Carmen Smith was disqualified from the competition after appearing in a music video with singer Guy Sebastian for his song, "Gold". The Nine Network deemed the appearance as an "unfair advantage" over other contestants and it made a decision with the producers of the show to immediately disqualify her from the competition. This is the first disqualification of a contestant in the history of the show's format.^[25]
