Vigo [1] is a former hamlet and now an area of Walsall Wood in the Metropolitan Borough of Walsall in the West Midlands county of England. [2] It is located to the northeast of both Aldridge and Walsall. It is located between Aldridge and Walsall Wood. It is also bordered by the Daw End Branch Canal, [3] separating it from the nearby villages of Shelfield and Pelsall. It is mostly made up of housing estates. [4]
Vigo was first recorded as a settlement in 1805, located on the southern part of Holly Bank Common. [5] The area later recorded in the 1841 United Kingdom census as Vigo, Walsall Wood. [6] In a 1901 Ordnance Survey map of Walsall Wood, the area was also recorded as part of the village. [7] The area has since formed part of Walsall Wood, with its name preserved in street names such as "Vigo Close", "Vigo Terrace" and "Vigo Road".
The former Aldridge to Brownhills Branch railway ran between Walsall Wood and Aldridge stations through the area. A bridge over the former railway, named "Vigo Bridge" still remains carrying Vigo Road over it. [8] The old trackbed is now used as a footpath to Walsall Wood.
The Daw End Branch Canal passes near to the area under Hollander's Bridge. [9] A bus service, operated by National Express West Midlands runs adjacent to Vigo Road. Connecting Walsall to Castlefort School via Aldridge and Walsall Wood. [10]
