Viyyur High Security Prison

The Viyyur High Security Prison is a high tech, high-security prison situated in Viyyur, Thrissur city, Kerala, India. Half of the prison will be located underground to resist aerial attack. The prison can accommodate 300 people. [1] [2] [3]

History and facilities

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy laid the foundation stone for the first high security prison on 17 June 2011 at Viyyur, Thrissur City. The prison would be constructed in a 10-acre plot adjacent to Central Prison, Viyyur at an expense of 20 crore and is expected to be completed in two years. The prison will have two compound walls, six-layered security scanning for visitors and CCTV in every cell, double-layer peripheral wall, five watch towers, a hi-tech video conference hall for trials, two hydraulic gates, single cells for solitary confinements and a hospital with mini-operation facility. A 250 sq ft lawn would be developed surrounding the prison wall to avoid hand grenade attacks and personnel with a technical background would be deployed at the new facility. [4] [5]

The assault on T. J. Joseph occurred on 4 July 2010. T. J. Joseph, a professor of Malayalam at Newman College, Thodupuzha, a Christian minority institution affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University had his wrist disarticulated on allegation of blasphemy, by members of Popular Front of India, an Islamic organisation in India. The then Minister of Home Affairs of Kerala, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, made a statement that while government is aware that there is a local Dar-ul Khada set up by the Popular Front of India under the supervision of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, functioning to resolve civil disputes, there were no complaints received that it was passing "Taliban-model" orders.

Central Prison, Viyyur, is situated in Thrissur in Kerala state of India and is authorised to accommodate 520 prisoners. It is one of the four central prisons other than Poojappura, Kannur and Tavanur, situated in Kerala state. It is one of the most important correctional and detention centers in the state. As per Kerala Prison Rules, the prison is meant to detain convicted habitual prisoners on a long-term basis. The prison has separate buildings designated as special jail and sub-jail meant for short-term convicts and people on trial, respectively.

The Thrissur Town Hall is an imposing building situated in Thrissur city, Kerala state, India. It was constructed during the Dewanship of RK Shanmughom Chetti and contains the Archaeological Museum and Picture Gallery, where mural paintings from all parts of the Kerala are copied and exhibited. The must see in this museum is the collection of the old manuscripts, written on palm leaves and called olagrandhangal. The Town Hall was built in honour of the then Emperor of India, King George, for his silver jubilee. The architecture is in the Victorian style with a lawn and garden in front.

Thrissur railway station is an NSG–2 category Indian railway station in Thiruvananthapuram railway division of Southern Railway zone. It is a railway station in Kerala, India. Thrissur also is known as the Cultural Capital of Kerala. Thrissur railway station is a major railway head in South India and A1 classified station operated by the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways and comes under the Thiruvananthapuram railway division. It is the busiest railway station in Kerala state in terms of rail traffic with 189 halting trains. At 97 crore in financial year 2018–19, it is the fourth largest in terms of passenger revenues in Kerala and the eighth largest in Southern Railway. Padukad is a village near Thrissur in the state of Kerala, India. It is located near the northern border of the corporation area. The village contains one temple and no mosque or churches. A nearby Roman Catholic Church is at Viyyur Velankanny matha church Viyyur. The nearest mosque is at Patturaikkal.

In most jurisdictions, prison inmates are forbidden from possessing mobile phones due to their ability to communicate with the outside world and other security issues. Mobile phones are one of the most smuggled items into prisons. They provide inmates the ability to make and receive unauthorized phone calls, send email and text messages, use social media, and follow news pertaining to their case, among other forbidden uses.

K. P. Jayanandan, infamously known as Ripper Jayanandan, is a serial killer from Thrissur, who is accused of seven murders committed during a span of 35 robberies, in and around Thrissur Ernakulam border areas. For the seven murders committed by Jayanandan, including the double murder at Perinjanam in October 2004, Thrissur Principal Sessions judge sentenced him to death by hanging in June 2008. He was sent to Poojapura Central Jail to await execution but escaped in June 2013. He was captured on 9 September 2013 near Thrissur. Although, in March 2023, an article was written by journalist Nideesh M.K attempting to reanalyse the case with evidence from Jayanandan's perspective where the latter claims he was framed by the police.

Viyyur Jail Park is recreational park situated near the Central Prison, Viyyur in Thrissur City of Kerala. The park is the oldest park in Kerala state.

A prison break is an unlawful act under Nigerian law, of a prisoner forcing their way out of a prison. It can also be described as attacks on the Nigerian Prisons Services by terrorists such as Boko Haram and armed robbers in which many prisoners are released. Often, when this occurs effort are made by the Nigerian Prisons Services in conjunction with security agency to rearrest the escapee and return them to the prison and this may result in the extension of their jail term. Prison break in Nigeria may be attributed to corruption, poor funding of the prison services, poor prison facilities, inadequate security features such as CCTV, motion sensors, high wall made up of barbed wire and sometimes electric fencing of the wall.

Mohammed Nisham A A is businessman and convicted criminal, notable for the K Chandrabose murder case and is currently lodged in a prison in Kerala, India after he was convicted. He is from Muttichoor, a town near Padiyam and the Kurumali River in Thrissur district in Kerala. Nisham is primarily into tobacco and real estate businesses. He is the managing partner of Kings Beedi Co., based in Thirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, a company founded by his late father, Adakkaparambil B Abdulkader. Apart from being a prominent tobacco supplier, he has hotel and jewellery businesses in the Middle East.
