The Wanshan Archipelago,formerly known as the Ladrones Islands,is a 104-island archipelago that is a part of Xiangzhou District in Zhuhai,Guangdong Province,China.
Most of the islands of the archipelago are in the Wanshan Marine Development Experimental Zone (万山海洋开发试验区) which consist of three towns: [1] Guishan Town (桂山镇), Dangan Town (担杆镇) and Wanshan Town (万山镇).
Before Chu-Hai County was created in 1953, the islands were part of Po-On County. [2] [3]
The islands are situated in the South China Sea, to the south of the opening of the Pearl River estuary and Hong Kong.
The archipelago includes several groups of islands. The western group, located south of the Pearl River estuary and Lantau Island, was formerly known to Europeans as the Ladrones, from the Spanish for "thieves". It comprises Greater Wanshan, Guishan, and Wai Dangling Islands and the Zhizhou, Sanmen, and Aizhou groups. The eastern group, located south of Hong Kong Island, was known as the Lema Islands. Today, they are known as the Jiapeng Liedao and Dangan Liedao, respectively.
The largest island, Dangan, features mountainous terrain similar to Hong Kong.

The archipelago's economy is mainly fisheries (crystal prawn, peeler crab). There is a growing tourism industry with a focus on history, beaches, and the natural beauty of the islands. About 350,000 tourists visit the islands annually. Club Med opened a holiday resort on Dong'ao in 2014. [12]
There is also potential for petroleum extraction in the waters off the islands.

Zhuhai is a prefecture-level city located on the west bank of the Pearl River estuary on the central coast of southern Guangdong province, People's Republic of China, on the southeastern edge of the Pearl River Delta. Its name literally means "pearl sea", which originates from the city's location at the mouth of the Pearl River meeting the South China Sea. Zhuhai borders Jiangmen to the west, Zhongshan to the north and Macau to the southeast, and shares maritime boundaries with Shenzhen and Hong Kong to the northeast across the estuary.
Zhoushan is an urbanized archipelago with the administrative status of a prefecture-level city in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang. It consists of an archipelago of islands at the southern mouth of Hangzhou Bay, off the mainland city of Ningbo. The prefecture's city proper is Dinghai on Zhoushan Island, now administered as the prefecture's Dinghai District. During the 2020 census, Zhoushan Prefecture's population was 1,157,817, out of whom 882,932 lived in the built-up area made of two urban districts of Dinghai and Putuo.
Tam Kon Shan is a hill that stands between Moon Tsai Tong and Cheung Shue Tau on Tsing Yi Island, Hong Kong. Part of the hill was removed to build the west half of the Cheung On Estate. The nearby Tam Kon Shan Road and Tam Kon Shan Interchange were named after the hill.
Lantau Channel is a channel south of Fan Lau Kok of Lantau Island in Hong Kong. The channel is also on the water boundary between Hong Kong and mainland China. Across the border is the islands of Guishan Dao (桂山島), Niutou Dao (牛頭島) and Zhongxin Dao (中心島) of Wanshan Archipelago.
The Wanshan Archipelago Campaign (万山群岛战役) was a campaign fought between nationalist and communist forces for the control of Wanshan Archipelago, and resulted in communist victory. The archipelago consists of 48 islands strategically located at the mouth of the Pearl River, a chokepoint on the communication lines to Hong Kong and Macau. The largest island is the Laurel Mountain Island, which was formerly known as Trash Tail Island. Other major islands include Outer Linding Island, Dong'ao (东澳) Island, Tri-gate Island, Greater Ten-thousand Mountain Island, Lesser Ten-thousand Mountain Island, Burden Pole Islands, and Jianpeng (佳蓬) Islands.
The Battle of Dachen Archipelago was a struggle between the Nationalists and the Communists for the control of several archipelagos just off the coast of Zhejiang, China, during the Chinese Civil War in the post-World War II era, and it was part of the First Taiwan Strait Crisis. The PLA targeted and eventually took the Dachen Archipelago, and the other two smaller archipelagos from Nationalists: the Southern Muntjac Archipelago and the Southern Deer Mountain Archipelago.
Changdao County was a county in Yantai, a prefectural area of Shandong in the People's Republic of China. It consists of the Changshan Islands within the Bohai Strait, directly north of Penglai. They are known for their sandy beaches and picturesque limestone cliffs. The total land area measured 56 square kilometers (22 sq mi) and the coastline 146 km (91 mi). The population in 2020 was 40,898. In 2020, Changdao County was merged to Penglai county-level city and became Penglai District.
Putuo District is a district of Zhoushan City, Zhejiang, China with a population of 378,805.
Nei or Inner Lingding Island, formerly romanized as Lintin or Lin Tin Island, is an island in the Pearl River estuary in the southeastern Chinese province of Guangdong. Although it is located closer to the eastern shore of the estuary, it was until 2009 administratively part of the prefecture-level city of Zhuhai, whose main administrative center is located on the west shore of the river. The jurisdiction of Nei Lingding Island was handed over to Shenzhen in 2009.
Xiuyu District is a district of the city of Putian, Fujian, People's Republic of China. The district executive, legislature and judiciary are in Hushi Town (笏石镇), together with the CPC and PSB branches.
Jiapeng Liedao, also known as Asses' Ears, the Kaipong Islands or Ky-poong, is a group of islands off the coast of Guangdong in China. They form a chain of rocks and islands extending 10 miles SE from Eyan Shi Dao to Wenwei Zhou (蚊尾洲). The islands are part of the Wanshan Archipelago.

Dawanshan Dao, or Dawanshan Island, is an island in the southwest Wanshan Archipelago, offshore of Zhuhai, Guangdong in China. Xiaowanshan Dao is located in the west of Dawanshan Dao. Dawanshan Dao has an area of 8.1 km2 and a population of about 3,000. The seat of Wanshan Town (万山镇) of Zhuhai is located on the island.
Xiaowanshan Dao, or Xiaowanshan Island, is an island in the southwest Wanshan Archipelago, offshore of Guangdong in China. Xiaowanshan Dao is located in the west of Dawanshan Dao. The two islands are separated by about 1000 m. Xiaowanshan Dao has an area of about 4.35 km2.
Sanmen Island is an island in Daya Bay. Administratively it belongs to Huizhou. It lies 1.5 and 8.7 nautical miles to Dapeng Peninsula, Shenzhen and Sai Kung, Hong Kong respectively. Its highest point is 298 meters above sea level. It is 5 km2 in size and has a coastline of 13 kilometers.
Nanpeng Islands are a chain of islands located in the north of South China Sea, administered by Nan'ao County, Shantou, Guangdong, the People's Republic of China. They were formerly known to foreigners as the Lamock Islands. Nanpeng Islands consist of six islands: Nanpeng Island, Zhongpeng Island, Dingpeng Island, Qinpeng Island, Chizaiyu Island and Qiweiyu Island.
