"We Share the Same Sun" is a song by rock band Stereophonics. It is the opening track on their 2013 album Graffiti on the Train and was released as the album's fourth single on 12 August 2013. The song was released as a 10" vinyl format and Stereophonics have regularly played it as part of their set list. When Graffiti on the Train was released the song had a mixed to positive response and has been compared to "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac.

Composition

"We Share the Same Sun" is played at a tempo of 128 beats per minute. [1] The song runs for 3:44 on both the album and single. [2] [3] It begins with an acoustic guitar playing E♭-D-Gm-F [4] for fifteen seconds until lead singer Kelly Jones begins his vocals. [3] When the chorus enters, electric guitars are abruptly introduced, along with bass and drums provided by Richard Jones and Javier Weyler, respectively. [3] The second and last chorus is extended which includes Adam Zindani singing to harmonise with Jones. [3] [5] The bridge section has Zindani echoing Jones' vocals, this is then followed by a guitar solo from Zindani. [3] [6]

The guitar in the song was described as "bluesy" by Matthew Horton from the BBC. [7]

Promotion and release

"We Share the Same Sun" was regularly played on BBC Radio 2, particularly on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show , [8] two weeks before its release. [9] Jones performed a solo version and this was included on the bonus disc of Graffiti on the Train as "We Share the Same Sun (up close)". [2] On the iTunes deluxe edition, a video of Stereophonics in the studio - titled "We Share the Same Sun (In the Studio)" - was included which features shots of the studio, Stereophonics performing and fellow producer Jim Lowe at a mixing console. [10] [11] This was filmed when former drummer Javier Weyler was still in the band. [11]

Formats

Promotional CDs were made available on 1 July 2013 which featured the song as well as the instrumental version. [12] The limited 10" vinyl edition was available to pre-order on the band's website and was released on 12 August 2013 with lyrics etched on Side B. [13] The cover art for the single was created by Steve Goddard who created the artwork for Graffiti on the Train. [2] [3]

The music video for "We Share the Same Sun" was directed by Jones. [14] It features the band in a low-lit room performing while an image projector displays various multicoloured patterns on them and the wall behind them. [15] [16] There are also shots of the projector behind individual band members as they play, creating lens flares. [17] Although Jamie Morrison is seen playing the drums in the video it was Javier Weyler who provided the drums on the track. [2] [17]

Live performances

In March 2013, Stereophonics held a March Tour to support Graffiti on the Train and "We Share the Same Sun" was played at all the shows. [18] [19] The band were booked for several summer festivals in 2013, including Pinkpop Festival (16 June), T in the Park (14 July) and the V Festival (18 August), where they performed the song. [20] [21] [22] When performing at Radio 2 In Concert, the song was the first of 6 songs to be played from the album. [23]

Critical response

Initial reviews of "We Share the Same Sun" have been mixed to positive. When reviewing Graffiti on the Train, Drowned in Sound contributor Sean Adams gave the song a positive review, calling it one of the stand-out tracks on the record. He compared the beginning of the track to "Landslide" by Fleetwood Mac. [24] Eric Allen from American Songwriter called the song "moody" but stated, "it becomes glaringly obvious the band has regrouped and rediscovered their passion for making records." [25]

Matthew Horton at the BBC had a less enthusiastic response, describing it as "turning a bluesy guitar over and over against sinister keys – no quick rewards here." [7] At NME, Tom Howard had a negative response writing, "By slowly fading into the background of pop culture, the Stereophonics have created some space to pump out the same old stuff for their fans. So on ‘We Share The Same Sun’ Kelly Jones is gruff and there’s a big chorus, and the faithful will lap it up like hairy dogs with bowls of ice-cold water in hot weather." [26]

Appearances in other media

The song has been used by Sky Sports F1 in the background of their coverage of race weekends.[ citation needed ] A clip of the song was played on Channel 4's Sunday Brunch programme. [27]

Language. Sex. Violence. Other? is the fifth studio album by alternative rock band Stereophonics. Produced by Kelly Jones and Jim Lowe, it was released on 14 March 2005 on V2 Records. After the band's two previous albums, which contained much more acoustic music and an overall mellower sound, the band brought back the harder and more abrasive alternative rock and indie rock sound they were known for and songs such as "Doorman" and "Brother" are some of the band's most aggressive songs. A new wave influence is also prevalent on the album.

"Mama Told Me Not to Come", also written as "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)", is a song by American singer-songwriter Randy Newman written for Eric Burdon's first solo album in 1966. Three Dog Night's 1970 cover topped the US pop singles chart. Tom Jones and Stereophonics' version also reached No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart in 2000.

Javier Andrés Weyler is an Argentine-born Venezuelan-English drummer, best known as a member of Stereophonics from 2004 to 2012. He was the drummer in the Venezuelan band Claroscuro for over nine years until he left the country in 2001 to study audio engineering in London. In 2008 he released his first solo album, Lagrima, under the pseudonym of Capitan Melao.

"You're My Star" is a pop rock song by Welsh rock band Stereophonics from their greatest hits album, Decade in the Sun: Best of Stereophonics. It was released as the lead-single on 27 October 2008 with "Forever" as the B-side. It was produced by lead-singer and guitarist Kelly Jones along with Jim Lowe while written by the singer. The song was written in a day and is a personal one to Jones, though he would not say what the song is really about, instead leaving it to listeners to make up their own theory. The song is written about his daughter. The single went on to become the band's first to miss the top 100 of the UK Singles Chart and received a negative critic review.

Keep Calm and Carry On is the seventh studio album by Welsh rock band Stereophonics. Released by Mercury on 16 November 2009, the album debuted at number 11 with sales of 42,771 on the UK Albums Chart, the lowest position for a studio album released by the band. The album was named after a British World War II poster of the same name. Keep Calm and Carry On was the first studio album by the band to feature guitarist Adam Zindani as a permanent member of the band. In the initial months after release, fans could access bonus content from the band's website with their copy of the album. This featured videos of a Track By Track rundown of the album, a Welcome Message from the group, the photoshoot for the album, and live audio of "You're My Star" (Acoustic) and "I Stopped to Fill My Car Up" from the Greatest Hits tour.

The Graffiti on the Train Tour was a worldwide concert tour by rock band Stereophonics. The band have played at festivals as well as their own shows while on the tour. It was the band's first tour without drummer Javier Weyler, who was replaced by Jamie Morrison. The tour started in Newport, Wales on 15 December 2012 and is set to end in London, England on 28 November 2013. During their leg in Japan, lead singer Kelly Jones twisted his ankle after a night out with Morrison. With their flight due to leave within a few hours and Jones unable to walk, bassist Richard Jones had to transport the singer across the airport in a luggage trolley. For the next gigs, Jones had to wear a leg strap which restricted his movement on stage. Later on while on the Australian leg, he also suffered from a respiratory tract infection which forced the band to cancel their show in Melbourne on 23 July, Stereophonics' first cancellation in 17 years. Before their American leg of the tour, a competition was held by Creative Allies for people to design a poster for the leg. The winner, Yiotu, won $500 and a Stereophonics prize pack. During the last leg of the tour, The Wind and The Wave supported the band from 7–16 November. For the remaining dates, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis were the band.

<i>Keep the Village Alive</i> 2015 studio album by Stereophonics

Keep the Village Alive is the ninth studio album by Welsh rock band Stereophonics. Released on 11 September 2015, it was produced by lead singer and guitarist Kelly Jones, along with Jim Lowe. It is intended to be the second of two album volumes, with its predecessor Graffiti on the Train being the first. It is the first album to feature Jamie Morrison, who joined during the production of Graffiti on the Train in 2012. Keep the Village Alive was met with a similar positive response as Graffiti on the Train and topped the UK Albums Chart, becoming the band's first to do so since Pull the Pin (2007).

Recorded over an eleven-day period between 29 June and 9 July 2019 at The Ramsbury Brewery & Distillery in Marlborough, Wiltshire, the album was produced by lead singer and guitarist Kelly Jones and George Drakoulias. Kind topped the UK Albums Chart, becoming the band's first to do so since Keep the Village Alive (2015) and their seventh overall.
