Weightlifting was part of the 1993 National Games of China held in Beijing. For the first time in National Games history women were part of the event. Men competed in ten and women in nine weight classes.

The competition program at the National Games mirrors that of the Olympic Games as medals are only awarded for the total achieved, but not for individual lifts in either the snatch or clean and jerk. Likewise an athlete failing to register a snatch result cannot advance to the clean and jerk.

Olympic weightlifting, or Olympic-style weightlifting, often simply referred to as weightlifting, is an sport in which the athlete attempts a maximum-weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates.

Tonga at the 2000 Summer Olympics

Tonga sent a delegation to compete at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia from 15 September to 1 October 2000. Sydney was Tonga's fifth consecutive appearance at a Summer Olympic Games. Nauru at the 2002 Commonwealth Games

Nauru was represented at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester by a team consisting solely of weight-lifters. Marcus Stephen, who would become President of Nauru five years later, competed for the fourth and last time. The 2002 Games were the first edition of the Commonwealth Games in which he failed to win a gold medal; Nauru's two golds were won by Reanna Solomon.

Robin Elizabeth Goad, also known as Robin Byrd-Goad, is a retired female Olympic weightlifter from the United States, who competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics. She won the bronze medal in the women's – 53 kg division at the 1998 World Weightlifting Championships in Lahti. Goad competed in the first Women's World Championships in 1987 at age seventeen and was the only female Olympian to compete in the 2000 Olympics who was also present at that first women's Worlds. She currently teaches Physical Education at an elementary school.

Kuo Hsing-chun Taiwanese weightlifter

Kuo Hsing-chun is a Taiwanese weightlifter, Olympian, four time World Champion, two time Universiade Champion, Asian Games Champion, and four time Asian Champion of Amis descent, competing in the 58 kg division until 2018 and 59 kg starting in 2018 after the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized the categories. She has set 11 senior world records in her career.

The weightlifting competition at the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games was held in Barranquilla, Colombia from 20 to 24 July at the Coliseo Universidad del Atlántico.
