Wharminda is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the Eyre Peninsula about 242 kilometres (150 miles) west of the state capital of Adelaide. [2]
South Australia is a state in the southern central part of Australia. It covers some of the most arid parts of the country. With a total land area of 983,482 square kilometres (379,725 sq mi), it is the fourth-largest of Australia's states and territories by area, and fifth largest by population. It has a total of 1.7 million people, and its population is the second most highly centralised in Australia, after Western Australia, with more than 77 percent of South Australians living in the capital, Adelaide, or its environs. Other population centres in the state are relatively small; Mount Gambier, the second largest centre, has a population of 28,684.
The Eyre Peninsula is a triangular peninsula in South Australia. It is bounded on the east by Spencer Gulf, the west by the Great Australian Bight, and the north by the Gawler Ranges.
Adelaide city centre is the innermost locality of Greater Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. It is known by locals simply as "The City" or "Town" to distinguish it from Greater Adelaide and from the City of Adelaide. The locality is split into two key geographical distinctions: the city "square mile", bordered by North, East, South and West Terraces; and the section of the parklands south of the River Torrens which separates the built up part of the city from the surrounding suburbs and North Adelaide.
Its boundaries were created in 1998 in respect to "the long established name" which is reported as being derived from the "native name of a spring and range of hills in the area." [1]
Wharminda Primary School opened as Wharminda Siding School in 1914. [7] [8] The locality also contains a hall, library and tennis courts. [8]
A postal receiving office opened at Wharminda on 5 January 1914, became a licensed post office on 11 January 1994, and closed on 24 September 1999. [9] It also formerly had a siding on the Eyre Peninsula Railway, which still runs through Wharminda. [1]
The Eyre Peninsula Railway is a 1,067 mm gauge railway located on the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia. The system is isolated from the rest of the South Australian railway network.
The principal land use within the locality is ‘primary production’ which mainly concerned with "grazing and cropping." It also includes the protected area known as the Wharminda Conservation Park. [10] [1]

The Division of Grey is an Australian electoral division in South Australia. The division was one of the seven established when the former Division of South Australia was redistributed on 2 October 1903 and is named for Sir George Grey, who was Governor of South Australia from 1841 to 1845.
Flinders is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. It is named after explorer Matthew Flinders, who was responsible for charting most of the state's coastline. It is a 58,901 km² coastal rural electorate encompassing the Eyre Peninsula and the coast along the Nullarbor Plain, based in and around the city of Port Lincoln and contains the District Councils of Ceduna, Cleve, Elliston, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Streaky Bay and Wudinna; as well as the localities of Fowlers Bay, Nullarbor and Yalata in the Pastoral Unincorporated Area. The seat was expanded in 2002 to include a western strip of land all the way to the Western Australia border.
The District Council of Cleve is a local government area on the eastern Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. The district is mostly agricultural in nature, but also encompasses the popular coastal tourist town of Arno Bay.
Wirrulla is a small grain belt town located 60 km from Streaky Bay on the Eyre Peninsula. The town is a focus point for many of the surrounding agricultural districts, and features a number of silos used to store grain from the surrounding areas. The name of the town is derived from an aboriginal word meaning "to make haste, to be quick".
Karkoo is a small rural centre located 20 km to the north of Cummins in the centre of Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. It is located in an agricultural district where the main economic activities are cereal growing and sheep grazing, and most of the district's small population live on surrounding farms.
Rudall is a settlement in South Australia. At the 2006 census, Rudall had a population of 130. It is named for the cadastral Hundred of Rudall, which was named after politician Samuel Rudall.
