In January 1930, the U.S. state of New York implemented a major renumbering of its state highways. Many previously existing numbered routes were renumbered or realigned. At the same time, many state highways that were previously unnumbered received designations. Most of the highways with numbers in the 100s to 300s were assigned at this time. Route numbers were assigned in clusters based on their general location. Because some of these route numbers are no longer in use, the pattern of clusters is not fully apparent today.
Before 1930, the route numbering system in place had its origins in the 1920s. At the time, New York only assigned numbers to a small subset of its state highways. Route numbers spanned from 1–80, with routes running primarily north–south having even numbers and routes generally running east–west having odd numbers. This scheme was abandoned with the advent of the U.S. Highway System in 1927. Some renumbering was done in 1927 to avoid overlapping route numbers.
The table below lists the routes in existence just prior to the 1930 renumbering and the effects of the renumbering on these routes.

In 1927, New Jersey's state highways were renumbered. The old system, which had been defined in sequence by the legislature since 1916, was growing badly, as several routes shared the same number, and many unnumbered state highways had been defined. A partial renumbering was proposed in 1926, but instead a total renumbering was done in 1927.
New York State Route 7 (NY 7) is a 180.30-mile-long (290.16 km) state highway in New York in the United States. The highway runs from Pennsylvania Route 29 (PA 29) at the Pennsylvania state line south of Binghamton in Broome County, New York, to Vermont Route 9 (VT 9) at the Vermont state line east of Hoosick in Rensselaer County. Most of the road runs along the Susquehanna Valley, closely paralleling Interstate 88 (I-88) throughout that road's length. Portions of the highway route near the cities of Binghamton, Schenectady, and Troy date back to the early 19th century.
New York State Route 48 (NY 48) is a 28.20-mile (45.38 km) north–south state highway in Central New York in the United States. The southern terminus of the route is located at Interstate 690 (I-690) exit 3 near the interchange between I-690 and the New York State Thruway (I-90) in Van Buren, northwest of Syracuse. The northern terminus is located at an intersection with NY 104 in Oswego. In between, NY 48 passes through the riverside communities of Baldwinsville and Fulton and runs alongside both the Seneca River and Oswego River. For most of its route, NY 48 serves as an alternate route of NY 481. The routes share similar alignments along the Oswego River from the Syracuse area to Oswego, with NY 481 following the eastern riverbank between the two locations.
New York State Route 359 (NY 359) is a state highway located entirely within the town of Skaneateles in Onondaga County, New York in the United States. At 1.71 miles (2.75 km) in length, it is one of the shortest signed state highways in all of New York. The route begins at NY 38A a half-mile (0.8 km) north of the Onondaga-Cayuga County county line and ends at NY 41A in the hamlet of Mandana. It lies between Skaneateles Lake and Owasco Lake. Excluding its termini, there are only two junctions with other roadways along the entire route. NY 359 was assigned in the early 1940s and was part of the original NY 26 from 1924 to 1930.
New York State Route 15A (NY 15A) is a north–south state highway located in the western portion of New York in the United States. It serves as an easterly alternate route of NY 15, beginning in the Livingston County town of Springwater and ending 35.19 miles (56.63 km) to the north in the Monroe County city of Rochester. NY 15A meets U.S. Route 20A (US 20A) in the hamlet of Hemlock, US 20 and NY 5 in the village of Lima, and Interstate 390 (I-390) twice in Henrietta and Brighton. Its southern and middle sections traverse mostly rural areas, while the northernmost piece in Henrietta, Brighton, and Rochester passes through significantly more developed areas.
New York State Route 248 (NY 248) is a 31.43-mile-long (50.58 km) state highway in a remote part of the Southern Tier region of New York in the United States. The route, located close to the Pennsylvania state line, passes through Allegany and Steuben counties. In the former, it runs mostly east–west from its junction with NY 19 in Stannards; but in the latter turns northwards to its north end at NY 36 in Canisteo. NY 248 used to be signed north–south in Steuben County, however, those designation were replaced by new east–west signage around 2013.
New York State Route 41A (NY 41A) is a north–south state highway in Central New York in the United States. It extends for 25.49 miles (41.02 km) from an intersection with NY 41 in the Cortland County town of Homer to a junction with U.S. Route 20 (US 20) in the Onondaga County village of Skaneateles. The southern half of NY 41A serves mostly rural areas, while the route's northern half runs along the western edge of Skaneateles Lake. NY 41A was assigned as part of the 1930 renumbering of state highways in New York to several previously unnumbered state roads and a section of pre-1930 NY 26.
New York State Route 38A (NY 38A) is a north–south state highway located within Onondaga and Cayuga counties in central New York in the United States. The southern terminus of the route is at an intersection with NY 38 in the village of Moravia. Its northern terminus is at a junction with U.S. Route 20 (US 20) and NY 5 in downtown Auburn. Much of NY 38A runs through rural, undeveloped areas situated between Owasco Lake and Skaneateles Lake.
Vermont Route F-5 is a town-maintained state highway located in Chittenden County, Vermont, in the United States. The route, assigned in the late 1920s, is the last remaining F-X designation in Vermont. F-X route designations were previously used for roads leading to ferries across Lake Champlain. VT F-5's western terminus is at the Charlotte–Essex Ferry traversing Lake Champlain, which links VT F-5 with New York State Route 22 (NY 22) on the opposite side of the lake. The eastern terminus is at an intersection with U.S. Route 7 (US 7) in Charlotte. It is known as Ferry Road for its entire length.
New York State Route 321 (NY 321) is a 8.45-mile-long (13.60 km) state highway in Onondaga County, New York, in the United States. The southern terminus of the route is at an intersection with U.S. Route 20 (US 20) in the village of Skaneateles. Its northern terminus is at an intersection with NY 5 in Bennetts Corners, a hamlet within the town of Camillus. NY 321 is predominantly a north–south highway; however, a portion of the route through the towns of Elbridge and Camillus follows an east–west alignment. The portion of NY 321 in Camillus between Forward Road and NY 5 is maintained by Onondaga County as part of County Route 66 (CR 66), a route that continues north of NY 5 to Memphis.
New York State Route 291 (NY 291) is a state highway in Oneida County, New York, in the United States. The route extends from an intersection with NY 69 in the town of Whitestown to a junction with NY 365 in the extreme northern tip of the town of Marcy, near the hamlet of Stittville. It is a two-lane highway its entire length. NY 291 meets NY 49, the Utica–Rome Expressway, at an interchange roughly 1 mile (1.6 km) northeast of NY 69. NY 291 provides access to the Marcy Correctional Facility and Mid-State Correctional Facility, both in Marcy.
New York State Route 69 (NY 69) is a state highway extending for 57.42 miles (92.41 km) across the central portion of the U.S. state of New York. The western terminus of the route is at NY 104 in the Oswego County village of Mexico. The eastern terminus is at NY 5A in the Oneida County village of Yorkville, just west of Utica. In between, NY 69 serves the city of Rome.
New York State Route 72 (NY 72) is a 15.36-mile-long (24.72 km) state highway in the North Country of New York in the United States. The road is an east–west highway located entirely within the eastern part of St. Lawrence County. The western terminus of NY 72 is at an intersection with NY 56 in the town of Potsdam, south of the village of Potsdam. Its eastern terminus is at a junction with NY 11B west of the community of Hopkinton in the town of Hopkinton.
U.S. Route 4 (US 4) is a part of the United States Numbered Highway System that runs from East Greenbush, New York, to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. In the U.S. state of New York, US 4 extends 79.67 miles (128.22 km) from an intersection with US 9 and US 20 in East Greenbush to the Vermont state line northeast of Whitehall. While the remainder of US 4 east of New York is an east–west route, US 4 in New York is signed north–south due to the alignment the route takes through the state. The portion of the route between Waterford and Whitehall is part of the Lakes to Locks Passage, an All-American Road.
New York State Route 195 (NY 195) was a 6.20-mile (9.98 km) long north–south state highway located within the town of Lawrence in St. Lawrence County, New York, in the United States. The southern terminus of the route was at NY 11B in the hamlet of Nicholville. Its northern terminus was at U.S. Route 11 (US 11) in the community of Lawrenceville. NY 195 was located in an extremely rural portion of the county and had only three intermediary intersections with other through traffic roads.

NY 35 followed a mostly northeast–southwest routing across the counties of Monroe and Wayne and passed through downtown Rochester.
The following is a list of former state routes in Pennsylvania. These roads are now either parts of other routes or no longer carry a traffic route number. This list also includes original routes of numbers that were decommissioned and later reactivated in other locations in which most of these are still active today.
