Iowa Highway 17 is a 103-mile-long (166 km) north–south state highway that traverses primarily rural areas in central and north-central Iowa. Iowa 17's southern end is near Granger in Dallas County at a freeway interchange with Iowa Highway 141, and its northern terminus is at an intersection with U.S. Highway 18 at the Kossuth-Hancock county line near Wesley.
Iowa Highway 13 is a north–south highway in eastern Iowa. It has a length of 85+1⁄4 miles (137.2 km). The southern terminus of Iowa Highway 13 is at U.S. Highway 30 (US 30) south of Bertram and southeast of Cedar Rapids. The northern terminus is at US 52 in rural Clayton County near the towns of Monona and Farmersburg near the intersection of US 52 and US 18.
Iowa Highway 38 is a 98-mile-long (158 km) state highway that runs through eastern Iowa. Iowa 38 begins at Iowa Highway 92 in Muscatine and ends at Iowa Highway 3 near Greeley.
Interstate 680 (I-680) in Nebraska and Iowa is the northern bypass of the Omaha–Council Bluffs metropolitan area. I-680 spans 16.49 miles (26.54 km) from its southern end in western Omaha, Nebraska, to its eastern end near Crescent, Iowa. The freeway passes through a diverse range of scenes and terrains—the urban setting of Omaha, the Missouri River and its valley, the rugged Loess Hills, and the farmland of Pottawattamie County, Iowa.
Iowa Highway 1 (Iowa 1) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Iowa that extends from Keosauqua to Anamosa. It travels nearly 120 miles (190 km), mainly through rich farmland and small communities. Iowa 1 provides an important link to Iowa City and the University of Iowa as it passes through campus. Portions of the route today date back to the late 1830s, when Martin Van Buren was president, making Iowa 1 one of the oldest routes in the state, pre-dating the current primary highway system by nearly eighty years. The highway was seriously damaged by the Cedar River in the Iowa flood of 2008, which closed the highway for seven weeks.
Iowa Highway 333 (Iowa 333) is a short highway in southwestern Iowa. It serves as a connector route between Interstate 29 (I-29) and U.S. Highway 275 (US 275) in Hamburg. Formerly spanning two counties, Iowa 333 is one of the shortest state highways in Iowa.
Iowa Highway 150 (Iowa 150) is an 85-mile-long (137 km) state highway in eastern and northeastern Iowa. It begins at U.S. Route 218 (US 218) in Vinton and ends at US 52 and Iowa 24 in Calmar. From Vinton, it heads north and east towards Urbana where it meets Interstate 380 (I-380) and Iowa 27, the Avenue of the Saints highway. At Independence, it intersects US 20 on the south side of town. Further north, it converges with Iowa 3 in Oelwein.
Iowa Highway 182 (Iowa 182) is a 9-mile-long (14 km) state highway in the northwestern corner of Iowa. It begins at U.S. Highway 18 (US 18) in Inwood and ends at Iowa 9 southeast of Larchwood. The highway has been in the primary highway system since 1930, when it was known as Iowa 26. On January 1, 1969, Iowa 26 and Iowa 182 swapped designations.
Iowa Highway 187 is a highway in northeastern Iowa. It begins at U.S. Highway 20 (US 20) southwest of Masonville and ends at Iowa 150 south of Fayette.
Iowa Highway 340 connected U.S. Highway 18 Business in McGregor to Pikes Peak State Park. It was designated in 1936 to connect Pikes Peak State Park to the primary highway system, which it did until it was turned over to Clayton County in 2003. It was turned over along with 700 miles (1,100 km) of other short highways that primarily served local traffic. It was mostly replaced by County Road X56. Aside from a short connector to the state park gate, the route was a part of the Great River Road.
On January 1, 1969, the Iowa State Highway Commission, now known as the Iowa Department of Transportation, renumbered several state highways. The changes to the highway system fixed a number of issues: creating continuous route numbers across state lines, removing duplicate route numbers where they were unnecessary, and extending route numbers in some locations. Twenty-six sections of highway were assigned new route numbers, duplicate route numbers were removed on eleven sections, and one route number was extended to another section.
The primary highway system makes up over 9,000 miles (14,000 km), approximately 8 percent of the U.S. state of Iowa's public road system. The Iowa Department of Transportation is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the primary highway system, which consists of Interstate Highways, United States Highways, and Iowa state highways. Currently, the longest primary highway is U.S. Highway 30 at 332 miles (534 km). The shortest highway is Interstate 129 at 0.27 miles (430 m).
U.S. Highway 61 (US 61) is a United States Highway that serves eastern Iowa. It enters the state from Missouri near Keokuk with US 136. North of Keokuk, it is overlapped by US 218 for a few miles. It the follows the course of the Mississippi River past Montrose and Fort Madison. It meets US 34 at Burlington. It passes through Wapello and bypasses Muscatine and Blue Grass on its way toward Davenport. There, it follows Interstate 280 (I-280) and I-80 around the Quad Cities. North of Davenport, it follows a freeway north toward DeWitt where it meets US 30. The highway continues north through Maquoketa and reaches the Dubuque area. There it is joined by US 151 and briefly by US 52. The two highways enter the downtown area on an expressway. Due to the proximity of the Mississippi River and railroad tracks that lie between, the routes have an indirect junction with US 20. The two highways leave the state and enter Wisconsin about one-half mile (800 m) north of the Illinois–Wisconsin state line.
U.S. Highway 77 (US 77) is the shortest U.S. Highway in the state of Iowa. It crosses into Iowa over the Missouri River from South Sioux City, Nebraska, at Sioux City and runs approximately three-tenths mile (500 m) to an interchange with Interstate 29 where the road continues north as Wesley Parkway. Like all other state highways in Iowa, the route is maintained by the Iowa Department of Transportation.
Iowa Highway 15 (Iowa 15) was a short state highway in Van Buren County. It ran from the Missouri state line, where it connected to Route 15 to Iowa 2 in Milton. The highway was designated on January 1, 1969, when the Iowa State Highway Commission renumbered several state highways in order to match up with adjoining highways in neighboring states. The route ceased to exist on July 1, 2003, when the Iowa Department of Transportation turned over 700 miles (1,100 km) of state highways that mostly served local traffic. While it was in service, there were two Iowa 15s in the state; the other was significantly longer and located in the northern part of the state thus avoiding confusion between the two routes.
Iowa Highway 99 (Iowa 99) was a state highway in southeastern Iowa. It began in downtown Burlington and generally followed the course of the Mississippi River north to Wapello. Most of the route was a part of the Great River Road. The highway was designated in 1931 and its course remained unchanged until it was removed from the primary highway system in 2003. It was replaced by County Road X99, though around Burlington, it is sometimes referred to as County Road 99.
Interstate 880 (I-880) is an auxiliary Interstate Highway in Iowa. Its route was created in 2019 from a section of I-680 in order to facilitate the movement of I-29 traffic around Council Bluffs in the event of Missouri River flooding. It follows the same routing as Interstate 80N (I-80N), which originally connected I-29 and I-80 from 1966 to 1973.
Iowa Highway 7 was a state highway that existed from 1957 to 1968. It began at the interchange between Interstate 29 (I-29), U.S. Highway 20, and U.S. Highway 77 in Sioux City and traveled north to end at Iowa 3 west of Le Mars. The route of Iowa 7 was an original primary road in 1920, but then it was known as Primary Road No. 29 and later Iowa 29. When I-29 was designated to come through Iowa in the 1950s, Iowa 29 was renumbered Iowa 7. Through Sioux City, the highway was well traveled, especially near I-29 and the downtown area; the inverse was true at the rural northern end. Subsequently, Iowa 7 was removed from the primary highway system in 1968.
