Melvin is a city in Osceola County, Iowa, United States. The population was 199 at the time of the 2020 census. [2]
Melvin had its start in the year 1900 by the building of the Gowrie branch of the Rock Island Railroad through that territory. [3]

There were 117 housing units at an average density of 720.5 per square mile (278.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 88.4% White, 0.0% Black or African American, 0.0% Native American, 0.0% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 4.0% from other races and 7.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race comprised 11.6% of the population.
Of the 95 households, 18.9% of which had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.1% were married couples living together, 6.3% were cohabitating couples, 27.4% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present and 25.3% had a male householder with no spouse or partner present. 43.2% of all households were non-families. 36.8% of all household were made up of individuals, 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older.
The median age in the city was 50.8 years. 20.6% of the residents were under the age of 20; 4.5% were between the ages of 20 and 24; 20.1% were from 25 and 44; 31.7% were from 45 and 64; and 23.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 54.3% male and 45.7% female.

Melvin is served by the Hartley–Melvin–Sanborn Community School District, which formed on July 1, 1991, with the merger of the Hartley–Melvin and Sanborn districts. The predecessor Hartley–Melvin district formed on July 1, 1981, through the merger of the Hartley and Melvin districts. [10]
Currently there are no school facilities in Melvin, not since Hartley and Melvin combined schools in 1980.[ citation needed ] Hartley–Melvin–Sanborn High School is the zoned high school. [ citation needed ]
