Voorhies is an unincorporated community in Lincoln Township, Black Hawk County, Iowa, United States.

Voorhies is located in the most southwestern portion of Black Hawk County at 42°20′09″N92°28′58″E / 42.3358204°N 92.4826908°E / 42.3358204; 92.4826908 [1] approximately 6 miles southwest of Hudson and 7 miles east of Reinbeck.

History

Voorhies was platted on June 17, 1900, shortly after the Chicago and Northwestern Railway reached its location. [2] :238

There are two businesses currently in Voorhies - a grain elevator, the Voorhies Grain Company and Raincap Industries. [3] However, in 1904 in addition to the Northern Grain Company [2] :665 Voohries had a cooperative telephone association [2] :698 and creamery. [2] :678

In 1924, Voorhies' population was 45. [4]

The Waterloo–Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area consisting of three counties in Iowa, anchored by the cities of Waterloo and Cedar Falls. As of the 2000 census, the MSA had a population of 163,706 . As of the 2010 Census, the MSA had a population of 169,484.

The Consolidation Coal Company (BBC) was founded in 1875 in Iowa and purchased by the Chicago and North Western Railroad in 1880 in order to secure a local source of coal. The company operated in south central Iowa in Mahaska and Monroe counties until after World War I. Exhaustion of some resources, competition from overseas markets, and other changes led to the company's closing down its mines and leaving its major planned towns by the late 1920s. The CCC worked at Muchakinock in Mahaska County until the coal resources of that area were largely exhausted. In 1900, the company purchased 10,000 acres (40 km2) in southern Mahaska County and northern Monroe County, Iowa.
