It was contested through two divisions: Eastern and Western. Staffordshire were the champions for the eleventh time, remaining the most successful club in the history of the competition.

The 1998 Britannic Assurance County Championship was the 99th officially organised running of the County Championship. Leicestershire won the Championship.
