Contents

A total of 21 AFC and OFC teams and Israel [1] entered the competition. However, South Vietnam could not compete after being annexed by Vietnam. The Asian zone was allocated 1 place (out of 16) in the final tournament.

There would be two rounds of play:

The AFC first round of 1990 FIFA World Cup qualification was decided by a draw which was conducted in Zürich, Switzerland, on 12 December 1987. The round began on 6 January 1989 and finished on 29 July 1989.

The AFC second round of 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification began on 18 February 2004 and finished on 17 November 2004.

The 1986 FIFA World Cup qualification AFC first round was part of the AFC qualifying tournament for the 1986 FIFA World Cup. 27 national teams were separated into an Eastern and Western zone where they were split into groups of 3 or 4, with the group winners progressing to the second round.

The 2015 AFC Asian Cup qualification was a qualification process organized by the AFC to determine the participating teams for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup. The 2015 AFC Asian Cup, hosted by Australia, featured 16 teams.

The second round of AFC matches for 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification was played from 24 May 2015 to 29 March 2016.

The AFC first round of 1998 FIFA World Cup qualification was contested between 36 AFC members.

The Iran men's national football team has participated in 14 editions of the AFC Asian Cup, first appearing in the 1968 Asian Cup after automatically qualifying as hosts. Overall, Iran is one of the most successful teams in Asia, having won three titles from 1968 to 1976. However, after the 1976 Asian Cup, Iran's best performance is just third place.

Since the AFC Asian Cup was founded in 1956, India has qualified for five Asian Cups, in 1964, 1984, 2011, 2019 and 2023.

China PR has participated in the AFC Asian Cup since 1976.

Hong Kong is one of the earliest participants in the AFC Asian Cup, and was also the first host in the tournament, in the inaugural 1956 edition. Hong Kong, since then, had qualified for two another tournaments in 1964 and 1968. The best result of Hong Kong is third place and it has remained as Hong Kong's best achievement in football.
