With Iran, North Korea, and Iraq qualifying for the final round fears were expressed in the United States of those countries potentially turning up at their tournament, since the three nations at the time were under economic sanctions by the United States. [1]

The 1998 Arab Cup is the seventh edition of the Arab Cup hosted by Qatar, in the city of Doha. Saudi Arabia won their first title.

The AFC fourth round of 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification was decided by a random draw conducted in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 27 June 2008. The round commenced on 6 September 2008, and finished on 17 June 2009.

The qualification matches for Group 3 of the European zone (UEFA) of the 1994 FIFA World Cup qualification tournament took place between April 1992 and November 1993. The teams competed on a home-and-away basis with the winner and runner-up claiming 2 of the 12 spots in the final tournament allocated to the European zone. The group consisted of Albania, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Spain.

The 4th Arabian Gulf Cup was the fourth edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup. The tournament was held in Doha, Qatar and was won by the three-time defending champions Kuwait. The tournament took place between 26 March and 15 April 1976. All matches were played at the Khalifa Sports City Stadium.

The AFC second round of 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification began on 18 February 2004 and finished on 17 November 2004.

The 2015 WAFF U-23 Championship took place in Doha, Qatar for the first time. Ten nations took part. This was Iran's last WAFF competition before joining the Central Asian Football Association.
