60 metres track and field sprint race

60 metres, or 60-meter dash, is a sprint event in track and field. It is a championship event for indoor championships, normally dominated by the best outdoor 100 metres runners. At outdoor venues it is a rare distance, at least for senior athletes. The 60 metres was an Olympic event in the 1900 and 1904 Summer Games but was removed from the schedule thereafter.

Coming into these championships, world 200 champion Dafne Schippers and Barbara Pierre shared the fastest time in the world at 7.00. During the heats both ran 7.02, but in the semis, Schippers' slow start made her vulnerable as Elaine Thompson beat her to the line.

2015 World Championships in Athletics – Womens 200 metres

The women's 200 metres at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics is scheduled to be held at the Beijing National Stadium on 26, 27 and 28 August.

Dafne Schippers Dutch heptathlete and sprinter

Dafne Schippers is a Dutch track and field athlete. She competes primarily in the sprints, having previously participated in the heptathlon. She is the 2015 and 2017 World Champion and won silver at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the 200 metres.

Barbara Pierre Haitian-born American track and field sprint athlete

Barbara Pierre is a Haitian-born American track and field sprint athlete who competes internationally for the United States. Her specialty is the 60-meter dash and the 100-meter dash. She had her highest world ranking in 2013, when she was the fourth fastest sprinter in the world over 100 m with her personal best of 10.85 seconds.

In the final, the start proved to be important, Pierre got out well with Thompson, Michelle-Lee Ahye and Asha Philip. The number 4 sprinter in the season Marie Josée Ta Lou was literally left in the blocks, yet 5 steps into the race, she had drawn even with Schippers. After spotting the leaders a step, Schippers got into her superior top end speed and ran down everybody, except Pierre, Thompson losing silver in the last step.

Michelle-Lee Ahye Sprint athlete from Trinidad and Tobago

Michelle-Lee Ahye [Last name rhyming with Lee, thus, ah-ee] is a Trinidadian sprinter. She was the gold medallist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games

Asha Philip British sprinter

Asha Solette Philip is an English sprinter and former junior gymnast specialising in mini-trampoline. She was the first British woman to achieve a global 100 metres title at any age-group, winning gold at the 2007 World Youth Championships aged 16. Following a serious knee injury in gymnastics, and a rehabilitation period of several years, she returned to athletics full-time in 2014, winning gold at the European Athletics Championships in the 4 x 100 metres relay for Great Britain, and bronze in the same event at the Commonwealth Games for England.
