The 2021 FINA Marathon Swim World Series began on 13 March with the first stage in Doha, Qatar and ended at the last stage on 16 December 2021 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It was the 15th edition of the FINA-sanctioned series, and included nine events. [1]
A 4×1500 metre mixed relay event was debuted as part of the Abu Dhabi Aquatics Festival at the final leg of the World Series. [2]

Sarah Fredrika Sjöström is a Swedish competitive swimmer specialising in the sprint freestyle and butterfly events. She is the current world record holder in the 50-meter freestyle, the 100-meter freestyle, the 50-meter butterfly, the 100-meter butterfly, and the 4×50-meter medley relay. She is a former world record holder in the 50-meter freestyle, 100-meter freestyle, 100-meter butterfly, and 200-meter freestyle. She is the first Swedish woman to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming. She won the Overall Swimming World Cup in 2017 and 2018 and she has won 10 individual World Championship gold medals. She currently represents Energy Standard in the International Swimming League.
Alia Shanee Atkinson, OD is a retired Jamaican swimmer and five time Olympian. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she became the second Jamaican swimmer to place in the top four at an Olympics Games, finishing fourth in the 100-metre breaststroke. In 2014, she became the second woman to swim a 1:02.36 in the short course 100-metre breaststroke tying the world record in the event. In 2016, Atkinson set a new world record in the short course 50-metre breaststroke. Two years later, in 2018, she set a new world record in the short course 50-metre breaststroke for the second time. She was the first Afro-Jamaican to win a world title in swimming. She won a total of 124 medals, of which 74 were gold medals, at Swimming World Cup circuits over the course of her career.
The FINA Marathon Swim World Series, known as the 10 km Marathon Swimming World Cup until 2017, is a series of 10-kilometer, open water swimming races held annually since 2007. Prior to 2007, 10K races were held as part of the FINA's Open Water Grand Prix series; post split, this latter series is now for races over 10 kilometers in length. Prizes and points are awarded for each race in the series, with the points being added together for an overall point standing.
Thomas Allen Shields is an American competitive swimmer. He is a two-time Olympian and the current American record-holder in the short course 50-meter and 200-meter butterfly events. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, Shields won a gold medal in the 4x100-meter medley relay for swimming the butterfly leg of the relay in the prelims. Later the same year he became the first American to swim faster than 44 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly, setting a new American record of 43.84. For the 2020 Summer Olympics, he swam the butterfly leg of the 4x100-meter medley relay in the prelims, and won a gold medal in the event when the finals relay finished in first place. At the Kazan stop of the 2021 FINA Swimming World Cup, Shields was the one and only swimmer representing the United States to compete in the international swimming competition, winning two gold medals and one silver medal in individual events. For the whole 2021 World Cup, Shields was the highest scoring American competitor and second-highest scoring male competitor.
Gregorio Paltrinieri is an Italian competitive swimmer. He is the Olympic and world long course and short course champion and three-times European long course champion in the 1500 m freestyle event at the 2012, 2014 and 2016 European Aquatics Championships, and two-times European long course champion in the 800 m freestyle event. Paltrinieri is a former 1500 m freestyle world record holder. He also holds the long course European records in the 800 m and 1500 m freestyle events with times of 7:39.27 and 14:32.80.
Vladimir Viktorovich Morozov is a Russian competitive swimmer and Olympic medalist. He is the former world record holder in the short course 100-metre individual medley, the current textile world record, World Cup record and Russian national record holder in the 100-metre individual medley and 100-metre freestyle, and Russian record holder in the 50-metre freestyle. He also holds the European record for the 100-metre individual medley. Formerly he held the Russian national record in the 50-metre backstroke and the 50-metre butterfly, and held the European and Russian records in the 50-metre breaststroke.
Nicolas Fink is an American competition swimmer who specializes in breaststroke events. He won three gold medals, two silver medals, and a bronze medal at the at the 2021 World Short Course Championships in relay and individual breaststroke events. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, he placed fifth in the 200 meter breaststroke. He won the silver medal in the 200 meter breaststroke at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships, and a gold medal in the 4×100 meter medley relay and a silver medal in the 200 meter breaststroke at the 2019 Pan American Games. He currently represents the Cali Condors which is part of the International Swimming League.
Abbigail "Abbey" Weitzeil is an American competition swimmer specializing in sprint freestyle. A multiple time Olympic medalist, she won a gold medal in the 4x100-meter medley relay for swimming in the preliminary heats and a silver medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay at the 2016 Rio Olympics. At the 2020 Summer Olympics she won a silver medal in the 4x100-meter medley relay and a bronze medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay, swimming in the final of both events. She is the American record holder in the 50-yard freestyle and is part of the American Record in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay.
Ryan Held is an American freestyle swimmer who specializes in the sprint events, and is currently sponsored by Arena. He holds the U.S. Open record in the long course 100 meter freestyle and three world records in short course relay events. At the 2016 Summer Olympics he won a gold medal in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay, swimming in both the prelims and the final of the event. In 2021, he won silver medals in the 50 meter freestyle and the 100 meter freestyle at the 2021 World Short Course Championships. At his first FINA World Aquatics Championships, the 2022 World Aquatics Championships, he won a gold medal in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay.
Florian Wellbrock is a German swimmer. He is the world record holder in the short course 1500 metre freestyle. He won gold medals in the 10 kilometre open water swim and 1500 metre freestyle at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships. At the 2020 Summer Olympics he won the gold medal in the 10 kilometre open water swim and the bronze medal in the 1500 metre freestyle. In December 2021, he won a gold medal in the 1500 metre freestyle at the 2021 World Short Course Championships.
Domenico Acerenza is an Italian open water swimmer and pool swimmer. He competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in the 1500 metre freestyle, placing ninth. At the 2019 World Aquatics Championships, he won a silver medal in the 5 kilometre mixed team event.
Zachary "Zach" Douglas Apple is an American competitive swimmer who specializes in the sprint freestyle events. He currently swims for DC Trident in the International Swimming League. He won his first Olympic gold medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics, swimming in the prelims and the final of the event, and later in the same Olympic Games won a gold medal and helped set a new world record and Olympic record in the 4x100-meter medley relay, swimming the freestyle leg of the relay in the final.
The 15th FINA World Swimming Championships were held from 16 to 21 December 2021 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It was previously scheduled for 13 to 18 December but moved back three days on 24 February 2021. Originally scheduled to be held in 2020, the championships were pushed back one year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Competition took place in a 25-metre temporary pool installed at Etihad Arena.
Claire Curzan is an American swimmer. She is the world junior record holder in the short course 100 meter butterfly and 50 meter freestyle. She also holds the American record in the short course 50 meter butterfly and the 100 yard butterfly. She won four medals at the 2019 World Junior Swimming Championships. At the 2020 Summer Olympics she won a silver medal in the 4×100 meter medley relay for her contribution swimming the butterfly leg of the relay in the prelims and in her individual event, the 100 meter butterfly, she placed tenth. At the 2021 World Short Course Championships, she won a total of two gold medals and two silver medals in relay events, and two bronze medals in individual events.
Victoria "Torri" Huske is an American competitive swimmer. She is the American record holder in the 100-meter butterfly. She competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics, winning a silver medal in the 4×100-meter medley relay, swimming the butterfly leg of the relay in the final, placing fourth in the 100-meter butterfly, and placing fifth in the 4×100-meter mixed medley relay where she also swam butterfly on the finals relay. At the 2019 World Junior championships, she won five gold medals and one silver medal. She won two gold medals and one silver medal in relay events at the 2021 World Short Course Championships.
Shaine Casas is an American professional swimmer. He was national champion in the 100-meter backstroke at the 2019 National Championships. In 2021 he was a three-time NCAA champion, once in the 100-yard backstroke, once in the 200-yard backstroke, and once in the 200-yard individual medley. At the 2021 World Short Course Championships he won a gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke and the 4×50-meter medley relay, a silver medal in the 200-meter backstroke, the 4×100-meter medley relay, and the 4×50-meter mixed medley relay, and a bronze medal as part of the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. In 2022, he won the bronze medal in the 200 metre backstroke at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships.
Daria Sergeevna Klepikova is a Russian competitive swimmer. She is a Russian record holder in the short course 4×50 metre freestyle relay and 4×50 metre medley relay. At the 2021 European Junior Championships she won six gold medals and one silver medal in individual and relay events. She won two gold medals at the 2021 European Short Course Championships in relay events.
Daniil Dmitrievich Markov is a Russian competitive swimmer. He is a former world junior record holder in the 4×100 metre medley relay. At the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics he won three gold medals and three silver medals. He he also won a gold medal and a silver medal at different European Short Course Swimming Championships. At the 2018 European Junior Swimming Championships he won two gold medals and one bronze medal. He won one gold medal, one silver medal, and one bronze medal in freestyle relay events at the 2021 World Short Course Championships.
The Abu Dhabi Aquatics Festival was a FINA-organized international aquatics competition spanning the disciplines of open water swimming, diving, and high diving, which took place from 15 to 20 December 2021 on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. It was held correspondent to the 2021 FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships. The festival was the first time competitions in the three disciplines are being conducted at the same time as and in conjunction with a FINA World Short Course Swimming Championships. In addition to sporting competitions, an interactive village is being provided for festival attendees. Coverage of the aquatics festival on television and via online streaming was provided on six continents with news agencies including ESPN (Americas), SuperSport (Africa), and beIN Sports (Asia) providing international coverage of the high diving competitions.
The 2022 FINA Marathon Swim World Series began on 28 May 2022 in Setúbal, Portugal for the first leg and will end in Eilat, Israel on 12 November 2022 for the fifth and final leg. It is the 16th edition of the FINA-sanctioned series. The 4×1500 metre mixed relay event was brought back after its debut at the final leg of the 2021 FINA Marathon Swim World Series and as part of the Abu Dhabi Aquatics Festival.
