Barbour County is a county in north central West Virginia, United States. At the 2020 census, the population was 15,465. The county seat is Philippi, which was chartered in 1844. Both county and city were named for Philip P. Barbour (1783–1841), a U.S. Congressman from Virginia and Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. The county was formed in 1843 when the region was still part of the state of Virginia. In 1871, a small part of Barbour County was transferred to Tucker County, West Virginia.
The West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) was a collegiate athletic conference which historically operated exclusively in the state of West Virginia, but briefly had one Kentucky member in its early years, and expanded into Pennsylvania in its final years. It participated in the Division II ranks of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), originally affiliated in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) until 1995, but held its final athletic competitions in spring 2013, and officially disbanded on September 1 of that year. Its football-playing members announced in June 2012 that they planned to withdraw to form a new Division II conference at the end of the 2012–13 season; this led to a chain of conference moves that saw all but one of the WVIAC's members find new conference homes.
Philippi ('FILL-uh-pea') is a city in and the county seat of Barbour County, West Virginia, United States, along the Tygart Valley River. The population was 2,929 at the 2020 census. In 1861, the city was the site of the Battle of Philippi, known as the "Philippi Races". Although a minor skirmish, this is considered the earliest notable land action of the American Civil War. The city has a weekly newspaper, The Barbour Democrat.
Alderson is a town in Greenbrier and Monroe counties in the U.S. state of West Virginia, on both sides of the Greenbrier River. The population was 975 at the 2020 census.
Alderson Broaddus University (AB) was a private Baptist university in Philippi, West Virginia. It was founded in 1871 and suspended its operations on August 31, 2023.
Salem University is a private for-profit university in Salem, West Virginia. It has about 250 students on campus and about 600 online students that are enrolled in undergraduate as well as graduate programs. The university was founded by the Seventh Day Baptist Church in 1888.
Sprint football is a varsity sport played by United States colleges and universities, under standard American football rules. Since the 2022 season, the sport has been governed by the Collegiate Sprint Football League and the Midwest Sprint Football League.
Whitescarver Hall is a historic dormitory building located on the campus of Alderson Broaddus University at Philippi, Barbour County, West Virginia, United States. It was built in 1911–1912, and is a three-story white brick building in the Neoclassical style. It measures 40 feet by 90 feet. It features a hipped roof covered in red tile and four classical pilaster topped with Ionic order capitals.
The Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level. It was named the 24th NCAA Division II conference and operates in the Great Lakes and East South Central States regions of the United States. The G-MAC began conference play in the 2012–13 academic year hosting 12 championships and continued to work through the educational assessment program. The conference received approval and became an active Division II conference in 2013–14, hosting 17 championships.
Austin Cook "Prex" Merrill was an American football coach. Merrill was the head football coach at Alderson–Broaddus College in Philippi, West Virginia. He held that position for the 1910 season. His coaching record at Alderson–Broaddus was 1–3. Merrill also coached at Bethany College in West Virginia. He later worked as a lawyer.
William T. Latto was an American football player and coach and professor at Bethany College in West Virginia.
Furman Leon "Fitz" Nuss was an American football and basketball coach. He served as the head football coach at Alderson–Broaddus College—now known as Alderson Broaddus University—in Philippi, West Virginia for one season, in 1924, compiling a record of 3–4–2.
Dennis Hunter Hardman was an American college football coach. He served as the head football coach at Alderson–Broaddus College—now known as Alderson Broaddus University—in Philippi, West Virginia for three seasons, from 1928 to 1930, compiling a record of 11–15–3. He attended Broaddus College from 1925 to 1929.
Dennis Creehan is an American gridiron football coach. He was most recently the athletic director at Alderson Broaddus University from 2011 to 2019.
The Mountain East Conference (MEC) is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level and officially began competition on September 1, 2013. It consists of 11 schools, mostly in West Virginia with other members in Maryland and Pennsylvania.
Randy Travis William Dobnak is an American professional baseball pitcher in the Minnesota Twins organization. He made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut in 2019 for the Twins. Listed at 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 m) and 230 pounds (100 kg), he throws and bats right-handed.
Chris Grassie is an English football coach who is currently the head coach of the Marshall University men's soccer team. During his tenure as coach of the Herd, he led the program to 3 Conference USA trophies, 1 Sun Belt Conference trophy, and the 2020 NCAA National Championship.
Travis Everhart is an American college football coach. He is the associate head coach and offensive line coach for Morehead State University, a position he has held since 2024. He was the head football coach for Alderson Broaddus University, a position he held from 2020 to 2022 when the school ended all athletic programs. He previously coached for Capital, California (PA), Tiffin, Unioto High School, South Dakota Mines, Louisburg, Hiram, Kent State, West Virginia Tech, Point, Charleston, Fort Valley State, West Virginia State, and Fairmont State. He played college football for Capital as a nose tackle and long snapper.
