On 9 August 2024, the Russian Armed Forces conducted a missile attack on the Ekomarket supermarket [1] in Kostiantynivka, Donetsk Oblast, killing 14 people and injuring 43 others. [2]

Attack

Vadym Filashkin, the governor of Donetsk Oblast, at first said that the attack was conducted using artillery, [2] but later stated that a Kh-38 missile was used. [1] Fourteen people, including three children, were killed, while 44 others were injured. [3]

According to Ukrainian interior minister Ihor Klymenko, the attack also hit houses and shops. [2] Filashkin later said that four houses, nine shops, a car wash and 12 cars had been damaged. A freight department of the postal service firm Nova Poshta located inside the supermarket was also damaged, injuring one of its employees. [1]

The attack was followed later in the day by a round of shelling from Smerch multiple launch rocket systems that injured two people and damaged six houses and a gas pipeline. [1]

Reactions

The head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine Andriy Yermak called the attack "another case of Russian terror", while President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pledged to hold Russia responsible. [1]

There have been attacks in mainland Russia as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on 24 February 2022. The main targets have been the military, the arms industry and the oil industry. Many of the attacks have been drone strikes, firebombing, and rail sabotage. The Ukrainian intelligence services have acknowledged carrying out some of these attacks. Others have been carried out by anti-war activists in Russia. <span class="mw-page-title-main">April 2024 Chernihiv missile strike</span>

On 17 April 2024, at around 9:00 am local time, the Russian military forces launched a missile strike against an eight-storey residential building in Chernihiv, Ukraine. Besides the direct hit against said residential building, another four high-rise buildings, a hospital, dozens of cars and a higher education institution were damaged. The attack killed 18 people, while 78 were injured. The attack came after a Ukrainian strike on a Russian military airfield in occupied Crimea.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">25 May 2024 Kharkiv missile strikes</span>

Air strikes on Kharkiv were carried out by the Russian Armed Forces in four locations on 25 May 2024. At least one UMPB D-30SN bomb was dropped at an Epicentr K hypermarket, destroying it. Russian forces dropped another bomb on the central park of culture and recreation, but it did not detonate. In the evening, Russian forces hit a street in a dense residential area of the city. At least two of the victims killed in the airstrike were Epicentr store employees.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">8 July 2024 Russian strikes on Ukraine</span>

A massive missile attack on Ukraine occurred on 8 July 2024 during the Russo-Ukrainian War. Kyiv, Kryvyi Rih, Dnipro, Kropyvnytskyi, and Pokrovsk came under fire from more than forty missiles of the Russian military. In total, at least 47 people were killed and about 170 were injured. In Kyiv, strikes damaged residential buildings and infrastructure, notably including the Okhmatdyt children's hospital, the country's largest, which killed two adults. The city's Artem military plant was also hit. The international community condemned the attacks. The Security Service of Ukraine defined Russia's attack on the Okhmatdyt children's hospital as a war crime and initiated criminal proceedings into the matter. Human Rights Watch also wrote that the strike against the children’s hospital should be investigated as a war crime.
