779 Nina (prov. designation: A914 BHor1914 UB) is a large background asteroid, approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) in diameter, located in the central region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 25 January 1914, by Russian astronomer Grigory Neujmin(1886-1946) at the Simeiz Observatory on the Crimean peninsula. [1] The metallic X-type asteroid with an intermediate albedo has a rotation period of 11.2 hours. It was named after the discoverer's sister, Nina Neujmina (Tsentilovich) (1889–1971). [2]
Nina is a non-family asteroid of the main belt's background population when applying the hierarchical clustering method to its proper orbital elements. [4] [5] [6] It orbits the Sun in the central main-belt at a distance of 2.1–3.3 AU once every 4 years and 4 months (1,588 days; semi-major axis of 2.66 AU). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.23 and an inclination of 15° with respect to the ecliptic. [3] The body's was first observed as A908 YB and A912 TE at Heidelberg Observatory on 16 December 1908 and 14 October 1912, respectively. The observation arc begins at Vienna Observatory on 31 July 1916, more than two years after to its official discovery observation at Simeiz Observatory on Crimea. [1]
This minor planet was named after Nina Nikolaevna Neujmina (Tsentilovich) (1889–1971), mathematician and sister of Russian discoverer Grigory Neujmin(1886-1946). [2]
In the Bus–Binzel SMASS classification, Nina is an X-type asteroid. [3] It is also an X-type in both the Tholen- and SMASS-like taxonomy of the Small Solar System Objects Spectroscopic Survey (S3OS2). [5] [11] Belskaya classifies Nina as a metallic M-type asteroid, which is the equivalent spectral type in the Tholen taxonomy for X-types with an intermediate albedo (see below). [12] [13]
In June 1981, a rotational lightcurve of Nina was obtained from photometric observations by Alan Harris at the Table Mountain and Lowell observatories. Lightcurve analysis gave a rotation period of 11.186 hours with a brightness variation of 0.25 magnitude ( U=3 ). [10] It was confirmed by Brian Warner at his Palmer Divide Observatory ( 716 ) in Colorado in January 2009, who determined a period of 11.17±0.01 hours with an amplitude of 0.32±0.02 magnitude ( U=3 ). [15] [lower-alpha 1] In September 2012, French amateur astronomer Gérald Rousseau obtained a period of 11.556±0.002 hours with an amplitude of 0.06 magnitude ( U=2+ ). [16]
According to the surveys carried out by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite IRAS, the NEOWISE mission of NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), and the Japanese Akari satellite, Nina measures (76.62±4.0), (80.572±2.220) and (81.27±1.00) kilometers in diameter and its surface has an albedo of (0.1440±0.016), (0.157±0.022) and (0.132±0.004), respectively. [7] [8] [9] The Collaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link adopts Petr Pravec's revised WISE-albedo of 0.1694 and takes a diameter of 77.46 kilometers based on an absolute magnitude of 8.1. [13] [14] The WISE team also published an alternative mean-diameter of (77.000±6.578 km) with an albedo of (0.1740±0.0559). [13] On 10 November 2005, an asteroid occultation of Nina gave a best-fit ellipse dimension of (79.9 km × 79.9 km), with a quality rating of 2. These timed observations are taken when the asteroid passes in front of a distant star. [5]
Belisana is a stony background asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 38 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 6 November 1877, by Austrian astronomer Johann Palisa at the Austrian Naval Observatory in today's Croatia. The S-type asteroid has a rotation period of 12.32 hours and a rather spherical shape. It was named after the Celtic goddess Belisama (Belisana).
Istria is a stony background asteroid from the central regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 33 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 8 February 1878, by Austrian astronomer Johann Palisa at the Austrian Naval Observatory in Pola, in what is now Croatia. The S-type asteroid has a rotation period of 11.77 hours. It was named for the Istrian Peninsula.
333 Badenia is a large background asteroid, approximately 72 kilometers in diameter, located the outer region of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 22 August 1892, by astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory in southwest Germany. The carbonaceous C-type asteroid has a rotation period of 9.9 hours. It was named after the historical Grand Duchy of Baden that existed until 1918, and where the discovering observatory is located. Badenia was the first asteroid to receive a provisional designation.
2100 Ra-Shalom is an asteroid and near-Earth object of the Aten group on an eccentric orbit in the inner Solar System. It was discovered on 10 September 1978, by American astronomer Eleanor Helin at the Palomar Observatory, California, who named it in commemoration of the Camp David Peace Accords. The C-type asteroid has a rotation period of 19.8 hours and measures approximately 2.7 kilometers in diameter.
462 Eriphyla is a Koronian asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered by German astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory on 22 October 1900. The stony S-type asteroid has a rotation period of 8.7 hours and measures approximately 35 kilometers in diameter. It was named after Eriphyle, from Greek mythology.
Tergeste is a rare-type stony asteroid from the outer region of the asteroid belt, approximately 78 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 21 September 1901, by Italian astronomer Luigi Carnera at Heidelberg Observatory in southern Germany. It was named after the Italian city of Trieste.
Edith, provisional designation 1903 MH, is a carbonaceous background asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 83 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 22 September 1903, by American astronomer Raymond Dugan at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory in southwest Germany, who named it after his sister Edith Eveleth.
817 Annika is a background asteroid in the region of the Eunomia family, located in the central portion of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 6 February 1916, by German astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory in southwest Germany. The stony S-type asteroid (Sl) has a rotation period of 10.56 hours and measures approximately 23 kilometers in diameter. Any reference of the asteroid's name to a person is unknown.
822 Lalage is a background asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 31 March 1916, by astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory in southwest Germany. The likely highly elongated asteroid with an unclear spectral type has a short rotation period of 3.3 hours and measures approximately 9 kilometers in diameter. Any reference to the origin of the asteroid's name is unknown.
838 Seraphina is a dark and large background asteroid, approximately 58 kilometers in diameter, located in the outer regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered by German astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory on 24 September 1916. The primitive P-type asteroid has a rotation period of 15.7 hours and is rather spherical in shape. Any reference to the origin of the asteroid's name is unknown.
1129 Neujmina is an Eos asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered on 8 August 1929, by astronomer Praskoviya Parchomenko at the Simeiz Observatory on the Crimean peninsula. The stony S-type asteroid has a rotation period of 5.1 hours and measures approximately 34 kilometers in diameter. It was named after Soviet astronomer Grigory Neujmin.
1404 Ajax is a carbonaceous Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 83 kilometers kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 17 August 1936, by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth at Heidelberg Observatory in southern Germany, and named after the legendary warrior Ajax from Greek mythology. The assumed C-type asteroid belongs to the 40 largest Jupiter trojans and has a longer than average rotation period of 29.4 hours.
1437 Diomedes is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 150 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 3 August 1937, by astronomer Karl Reinmuth at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory in southwest Germany. The dark D/P-type asteroid belongs to the largest Jupiter trojans and has a notably elongated shape and a longer than average rotation period of 24.49 hours. Diomedes was the first Jupiter trojan successfully observed during an occultation event of star. It was named after the hero Diomedes from Greek mythology.
2797 Teucer is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 110 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 4 June 1981, by American astronomer Edward Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station near Flagstaff, Arizona, in the United States. The dark D-type asteroid belongs to the 20 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 10.15 hours. It was named after the Greek hero and great archer, Teucer.

It was discovered on 17 March 1939, by Finnish astronomer Yrjö Väisälä at Turku Observatory on the coast of southwestern Finland. The asteroid was named for the Finnish city of Porvoo.
1902 Shaposhnikov is a dark Hilda asteroid from the outermost region of the asteroid belt, approximately 92 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 18 April 1972, by Russian astronomer Tamara Smirnova at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Nauchnyj, on the Crimean peninsula. The asteroid was named after Soviet astronomer and WWII casualty Vladimir Shaposhnikov. It was one of the last larger asteroids discovered in the main belt.

It was discovered on 6 February 1938, by Finnish Yrjö Väisälä at Turku Observatory in Southwest Finland. The asteroid was named after a Finnish philanthropist by the name of A. Vihuri.
