970 Primula ( prov. designation:A921 WKor1921 LB) is a stony background asteroid from the central regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 9.2 kilometers (5.7 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 29 November 1921, by astronomer Karl Reinmuth at the Heidelberg Observatory in southern Germany. [1] The S-type asteroid has a short rotation period of 2.8 hours. It was named after the genus of flowering plants, Primula , which are also known as "primroses". [3]
Primula is a non-family asteroid of the main belt's background population when applying the hierarchical clustering method to its proper orbital elements. [5] [6] It orbits the Sun in the central asteroid belt at a distance of 1.9–3.3 AU once every 4 years and 1 month (1,496 days; semi-major axis of 2.56 AU). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.27 and an inclination of 5° with respect to the ecliptic. [4] The body's observation arc begins with its official discovery observation at Heidelberg observatory in November 1921. [1]
This minor planet was named after the genus of flowering plants, Primula , also known as "primroses". These perennial herbs belong to the family Primulaceae (primrose family) and have large tufted basal leaves and variously colored flowers. The naming was mentioned in The Names of the Minor Planets by Paul Herget in 1955 ( H 93 ). [3]
In the SMASS classification (Bus–Binzel 2000), Primula is a common stony S-type asteroid. [4]
In November 2003, a rotational lightcurve of Primula was obtained from photometric observations by Pedro Sada, Eder Canizales and Edgar Armada using a remotely controlled commercial telescope at Tenagra Observatories ( 848 ). Lightcurve analysis gave a well-defined, short rotation period of 2.777±0.001 hours with a brightness variation of 0.18±0.02 magnitude ( U=3 ). [8] Astronomer Maurice Clark at the Preston Gott Observatory confirmed the period in September 2011, measuring 2.7768±0.0001 hours and a somewhat higher amplitude of 0.30±0.02 ( U=3 ) [9]
According to the survey carried out by the NEOWISE mission of NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, Primula measures 9.204±0.289 kilometers in diameter and its surface has an albedo of 0.229±0.031. [7] The Collaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link assumes a standard albedo for a stony asteroid of 0.20 and calculates a diameter of 10.30 kilometers based on an absolute magnitude of 12.3. [10]
827 Wolfiana, provisional designation 1916 ZW, is a Florian asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 8 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered at Vienna Observatory on 29 August 1916, by Austrian astronomer Johann Palisa, who named it after German astronomer Max Wolf. The assumed stony asteroid has a rotation period of 4.0654 hours.
898 Hildegard is a bright background asteroid, approximately 12 kilometers in diameter, that is located in the central regions of the asteroid belt. It was discovered by German astronomer Max Wolf at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory on 3 August 1918 and given the provisional designations A918 PG and 1918 EA. The stony S-type asteroid (Sl) has a rotation period of 24.9 hours and a relatively high orbital eccentricity of 0.37. It was probably named after Saint Hildegard of Bingen (1098–1179).
956 Elisa is a Flora asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 10.5 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 8 August 1921, by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth at the Heidelberg Observatory. The V-type asteroid has a rotation period of 16.5 hours. It was named after Elisa Reinmuth, mother of the discoverer.
960 Birgit is a background asteroid, approximately 8 kilometers in diameter, located in the Florian region of the inner asteroid belt. It was discovered on 1 October 1921, by astronomer Karl Reinmuth at the Heidelberg Observatory in southern Germany. The possibly S-type asteroid has a rotation period of 8.9 hours. It was named after Birgit Asplind, daughter of Swedish astronomer Bror Asplind (1890–1954).
965 Angelica, is a large background asteroid from the outer regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 60 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 4 November 1921, by astronomer Johannes F. Hartmann at the La Plata Astronomical Observatory in Argentina. The dark X-type asteroid (Xc) with a low TJupiter has a rotation period of 26.8 hours and is likely spherical in shape. It was named after the discoverer's wife, Angelica Hartmann.
1047 Geisha, provisional designation 1924 TE, is a stony Florian asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 11 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 17 November 1924, by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth at the Heidelberg-Königstuhl State Observatory in southwest Germany. The asteroid was named after the British musical The Geisha.
1335 Demoulina, provisional designation 1934 RE, is a stony Florian asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 7 kilometers in diameter. Discovered by Karl Reinmuth at Heidelberg Observatory in 1934, the asteroid was named after Prof. Demoulin, a Belgian astronomer at Ghent University. It has a slower-than average spin rate of nearly 75 hours.
1205 Ebella, provisional designation 1931 TB1, is a relatively eccentric asteroid from the central regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 5.5 kilometers in diameter.
