The Afghanistan cricket team toured Sri Lanka in February 2024. [1] [2] The tour consisted of one Test, three One Day International (ODI) and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. [3] In November 2023, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced its international calendar for 2024 and confirmed the bilateral series. [4] In January 2024, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed the fixtures for the tour. [5]

Contents

This was the first Test match played between the two sides. [6] The T20I series formed part of both teams' preparation for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. [7]

Prior to the start of the third ODI match on 14 February 2024, Sri Lankan cricketers wore blackarm bands as a mark of respect for the former Sri Lanka Cricket administrator Trevor Rajaratnam who died on 13 February 2024 due to age-related ailments. [8]

On 3 January 2024, Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis were appointed Sri Lanka's Test captain and vice-captain respectively. [15] [16] With Mendis and Wanindu Hasaranga were appointed as Sri Lanka's ODI and T20I captain respectively, [17] this was the first time Sri Lanka had three different captains in the three formats. [18]

Afghanistan also named Sharafuddin Ashraf, Shahidullah, Abdul Rahman and Bilal Sami as reserves for the ODI series. [19]

Afghanistan's Mujeeb Ur Rahman was ruled out of ODI series due to an injury. [20] For the last ODI, Sharafuddin Ashraf was added to the Afghanistan's squad as his replacement. [21]

On 11 February 2024, Asitha Fernando replaced injured Dushmantha Chameera in the Sri Lanka's squad for the last two ODIs. [22] [23]

He is a Right-arm leg spinner. Hasaranga made his international debut for Sri Lanka in July 2017. His elder brother, Chaturanga de Silva, has also represented the national team. Hasaranga made history when he took the first ever hat-trick for Sri Lanka in a T20 World Cup during the 2021 edition of the tournament, and being the first Sri Lankan on an ODI debut to take a hat-trick.

The Zimbabwe cricket team toured Sri Lanka in June and July 2017 to play one Test match and five One Day Internationals (ODIs). Originally, the schedule was for two Test matches and three ODIs. It was Zimbabwe's first tour of Sri Lanka since January 2002. All the matches were played as day games.

Pathum Nissanka Silva is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer who plays for Sri Lanka in all three formats of the game. He made his international debut for the Sri Lanka cricket team in March 2021 and currently slotted as the permanent opening batsman. On 9 February 2024, Nissanka scored an ODI double hundred, becoming the first Sri Lankan to achieve the feat.

The Zimbabwe cricket team toured the United Arab Emirates to play the Afghanistan cricket team in February 2018 to play two Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) and five One Day International (ODI) matches. Initial reports suggested that it would include Afghanistan's first Test match since being awarded Test status by the International Cricket Council in June 2017, but instead the tour consisted of just limited overs matches. An official from Zimbabwe Cricket said that both sides were still in talks to play a Test match, but that would be at some point after the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

Bodiyabaduge Oshada Piyumal Fernando, commonly as Oshada Fernando, is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer who plays all formats of the game. He plays for Chilaw Marians Cricket Club in domestic cricket, and he made his international debut for the Sri Lanka cricket team in February 2019. He has his education at Sri Sumangala College, Panadura.

The Ireland cricket team toured India in February and March 2019 to play three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), five One Day Internationals (ODIs) and a Test match against the Afghanistan cricket team. It was Ireland's first Test played overseas and the first Test match between the two sides. All of the fixtures took place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun. The ODI fixtures were part of Afghanistan's preparation for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. In January 2019, the fixtures were brought forward by two days, to avoid clashing with the Indian Premier League.

The India cricket team toured Sri Lanka in July 2021 to play three One Day International (ODI) and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. The ODI series formed part of the inaugural 2020–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League. All the matches took place at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Originally, the tour was scheduled to take place in June 2020, but was moved back to August 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, before being postponed. On 9 July 2021, following an outbreak of COVID-19 cases in the Sri Lankan camp, the series was postponed from 13 to 18 July.

The West Indies cricket team toured Sri Lanka in February and March 2020 to play three One Day International (ODI) and two Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. The full schedule for the tour was confirmed by Sri Lanka Cricket on 21 January 2020. The West Indies last toured Sri Lanka in October and November 2015.

The Zimbabwe cricket team toured Sri Lanka in January 2022 to play three One Day International (ODI) matches. The ODI series formed part of the inaugural 2020–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League.

Lokumarakkalage Dilshan Madushanka is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer who currently plays limited over internationals for Sri Lanka. He is a past pupil of Hungama Vijayaba Central College, Hungama.

The Tests formed part of the inaugural 2019–2021 ICC World Test Championship, and the ODI series formed part of the inaugural 2020–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League.

The Sri Lanka cricket team toured Australia in February 2022 to play five Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. In May 2021, Cricket Australia confirmed the fixtures for the tour. In January 2022, Cricket Australia updated the tour schedule, to reduce the risks of COVID-19 by minimising travel across the country.

The Sri Lankan cricket team toured India in February and March 2022 to play two Test and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. The Test series formed part of the 2021–2023 ICC World Test Championship. In September 2021, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the schedule for the tour. In January 2022, Sri Lanka Cricket made a request to play the T20I matches first, as the T20I squad would be coming straight from their tour of Australia. In early February, the change was agreed by both boards, with Bangalore hosting a day/night Test match, with the BCCI confirming the revised tour schedule.

The Australian cricket team toured Sri Lanka in June and July 2022 to play two Tests, five One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 International (T20Is) matches. The Test series formed part of the 2021–2023 ICC World Test Championship. Both cricket boards confirmed the fixtures for the tour in March 2022.

The Sri Lanka cricket team toured Bangladesh in March and April 2024 to play two Test, three One Day International (ODI) and three Twenty20 International (T20I) matches.
