Ahoada (Ehuda) is a city in Orashi Region of Rivers State, Nigeria, located northwest of Port Harcourt. [1] In Ahoada, the Ekpeye language is majorly spoken, though there are other languages in Ahoada like: Engenni, Ogba, and Ikwerre. [2]

Ahoada is divided into two local government areas; the Ahoada East, with its headquarters in Ahoada city, and Ahoada West having its headquarters at Akinimi, administratively. [3] It has been the administrative headquarters of Old Ahoada division in the pre-independence era with Ogba, Egbema, Engenni, Abua-Odual, Etche, Omuma, Obio-Akpor, Ikwerre and some area within Port Harcourt.[ citation needed ] According to the National Population Commission Census(NPCC) in 2006, the population in Ahoada was 583,900 that is; 233,700 for Ahoada East and 350,200 for Ahoada West and projected to be 700,680 in 2018.[ citation needed ]

Economy

The topography and its environment is favourable for agricultural activities since there is adequate rainfall within the year, this made the inhabitants of Ahoada base majorly on fishing and farming. [4] The indigenes of Ahoada were predominantly farmers and fishermen and presently even through the petroleum exploitations in its region. [5]

Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) has a campus known as satellite campus in Ahoada. And other places the RSUST campuses were built include, Etche and Emohua. According to the Vice Chancellor of Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Prof. Nlerum Sunday Okogbule (as at the year 2021) the campus built in Ahoada is intended to boost the social and economic activities and as well help to improve the development of the host community and neighbouring communities. [6]

Its latitude 5° 4' 58" N, Longitude 6° 38' 59" E and both Latitude and Longitude 5.0828, 6.64981. Its climate type is a tropical monsoon climate.[ citation needed ]

The Engenni people live in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. They are among the many sub Ijaw groups but they speak a language which linguistic scholars have described to be Edoid. They live in close proximity with other Ijaw people. They primarily live in Ahoada west local government area of Rivers state, Nigeria. Although they consider themselves to be Engenni, the Engenni speak an Edoid language. Alagoa (2003) said: “---The penetration of the Niger-Delta by Edoid groups extends to the Epie-Atissa and Engenni of the central and Eastern Niger-Delta----The Epie, along with the Ogbia and other groups of the central and eastern Niger-Delta, are historically united with the Ijaw.” The other groups of the central and eastern Niger-Delta which Professor Ebiegberi Alagoa said that were historically united with the Ijaw, include the Engenni, as shown from his narrative above. The Engenni have close relations with neighbouring Ijaw tribes such as the Zarama and Epie-Atissa.

The Ogba is a tribe of the Benin ancestral group in Rivers state. The Ogba people speak the Ogba dialect. The Ogba reside in a local government called Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni in Rivers state Nigeria. The Ogba language has three dialects namely; Usomini, Igburu, Egi dialect. The Ogba kingdom is made up of three clans which includes; Egi, Igburu, Usomini clans, and its largest urban town is Omoku. Ogba people speak two sub-dialects of the Ogba dialect, the Egi and Igburu. Eligbo and Ukporomini are two Ogba communities in Ahaoda East Local Government Area, while Itu II in Emohua LGA also speaks Ogba language.

With about 258,700 People according to 2006 Census. It is bounded by Imo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Anambra States and also by Ahoada West, Ahoada East and Emohua Local Government Areas of Rivers State. They are part of the Igboid speaking Areas of Rivers State with three Tribes starting with Ogba as the dominant tribe with 12 legislative wards, the Egbema and Ndoni people who are also found in Ogbaru L.G.A and Ukwuani L.G.A both with 2&3 legislative wards respectively. It is majorly upland and home to the highest upstream Oil and Gas exploration/exploitation activity in the State since the early 1960's with about 12 mining/producing fields operated by AGIP, Total Energies and Shell/NPDC with many other reserve/untapped fields. It is part of the Ogba / Egbema / Ndoni / Ahoada West constituency of the Nigerian House of Representatives. Hon. Vincent Job is the Executive Chairman of ONELGA.

Echie administratively known as Etche is an indigenous Igbo group mostly found in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Presently, its people make up Etche and Omuma, two of the 23 Local Government Areas of Rivers State they can also be found in Ngor Okpala L.G.A and Omuma town both in Imo state. They are part of the 13 federal constituencies representing River State in Nigeria's National Assembly and part of the Rivers East Senatorial District. Its people are mostly farmers, and they speak the Etche dialect of the Igbo language family.

Ahoada West is a Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria, located Northwest of Port Harcourt. It was extracted in 1996 in the General Sani Abacha military regime from the old Ahoada Local Government that makes up the present Orashi Region of Rivers State. Its seat is in the town of Akinima.

Ikwerre or ikwerri is a Local Government Area in Rivers State, Nigeria. Its headquarters is in the town of Isiokpo 'known as the ancient Kingdom of Ikwerre land'. It is the first Iwuhuohna local government and later Emohua, Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt LGAs were created, also the Ikwerre tribe occupies the upland region of Rivers State. It shares boundaries with Imo State to the north, Emohua to the west, Etche to the east, and Obio-Akpor to the south.

Ekpeye is one of many languages spoken in Rivers State. It is spoken by a culturally homogeneous people who are located in different administrative units known as Igbu (Kingdoms). Ikwerre is one the languages spoken in Rivers State and it is related to Ekpeye. Earlier articles described Ekpeye as having four mutually intelligible dialects classified according to the designations of the different Igbu as Ubie, Akoh, Igbuduya and Upata. The 'four dialects' only have minor differences in lexicon and phonology. In phonology, for example, the only difference is in the use of the alveolar implosive/dh/ by the Ubie and Igbuduya speakers while Akoh and Upata speakers use the alvelar plosive /t/ before a verbal suffix -hwu. It is important to note that the four Igbu mentioned have undergone further divisions.

Elections in Rivers State are supervised and conducted by two major electoral bodies, Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). There are 23 local government areas, 319 electoral wards and 4442 polling units in the state. Elections for Governor and the House of Assembly are held every four years, along with federal elections for President and the National Assembly.
