Background

The ward was created in 1950, [1] covering the eastern portion of the former Chorlton-cum-Hardy ward. Its northern boundary ran from the junction of Wood Road and Upper Chorlton Road to the junction of Claremont Road and Yew Tree Road, its eastern boundary ran along Yew Tree Road, its southern boundary ran along Wilbraham Road and the Fallowfield Loop, and its western boundary ran along St. Werburgh's Road and Egerton Road. These boundaries were significantly altered in 1971, [2] with that part of the ward to the east of Princess Road transferred to the new Lloyd Street ward, its name was also shortened to 'Alexandra'. In 1982, the ward was abolished, and its remaining area became the new Whalley Range ward. [3]

For the entirety of its existence, the ward formed part of the Manchester Moss Side Parliamentary constituency. [4] [5]
