Ali Mall is a shopping mall at the Araneta City in Cubao, Quezon City beside SM Cubao, and is owned by The Araneta City Inc. (ACI, Inc.), a subsidiary of the Araneta Group. Known as the first major shopping mall with integrated shopping in the Philippines, the mall was named in honor of boxer Muhammad Ali, and was built in 1976, making it one of the oldest malls in the country. Construction for the mall began in 1975 after Muhammad Ali's boxing victory against Joe Frazier in Araneta Coliseum, dubbed "Thrilla in Manila". [4] [5] As the country has limited malls and department stores during the 1970s, wherein most malls were once only scattered throughout Metro Manila and selected provinces, primarily in Binondo, which served as the country's main business district before the arrival of bigger business districts such as Makati Central Business District and the Ortigas Center. Due to the success of the malls in Binondo and amidst the rising competition to cater potential customers, this influenced J. Amado Araneta's son, Jorge Araneta, a member of the Araneta family laid plans to build a mall and name it after Ali in honor of his victory. [2] [6] As an announcement came in regarding the plans to a mall under his name, Ali was overjoyed with the proposal and did not charge any royalty fees for the project. The mall was completed within the year and was inaugurated on June 30, 1976, and with Ali himself attending the ceremony. During the mall's opening, the mall has a floor area of 62,000 square meters (670,000 sq ft). [7]
The mall was designed by the architectural firm Sindiong-Ocampo, where Antonio S. Sindiong serves as the main architect and Lamberto Un Ocampo as the main engineer of the project, whom was also hired by Jorge L. Araneta to design the Farmers Plaza. [8] Ali Mall featured many firsts for the country, such as the first fully-enclosed integrated mall with multi-level covered parking garage, featuring a spiral driveway accessing all floors; the Alimall Cineplex 4, first cineplex with two cinemas, which was upgraded to four theatres; the largest indoor skating rink, known as Skate Town; and the first food court, presently known as the Food Plaza, [9] with its first tenants being Papemelroti, Blue Magic, and Rusty Lopez. [10] During its opening, the mall also hosted a ringside lobby bar, a first class ballroom, and snack bars, while the mall's interiors presents a mixture of greenery . [11]
During the 1980s, the mall underwent expansions and renovations, however, due to the political uncertainties due to the coup attempts against Corazon Aquino from the late 1980s, as well as market driven factors due to the fierce competition from constant rise of other large shopping malls within Metro Manila within the 1990s to the early 2000s. In October 2009, a new expansion to Ali Mall was opened and the renovation was completed in 2010. The ₱200 million renovation project consisted of a fully enclosed footbridge named the Ali Mall Skywalk that connected Ali Mall to nearby SM Cubao, to commemorate the friendship and history between the two malls. [12] The renovation also featured new modernized interiors, expanded sidewalks, and a modernization of the Ali Mall Cineplex 4. The mall also featured new revamped sections to cater market demands, such as the former Shoe Center, which opened its doors within the late 2000s, before closing its doors in 2017 to be converted into the Food Lane, completed in early 2018.
In March 2019, a portion of the mall's upper ground floor was remodeled to cater novelty items, antiques, art, music, and memorabilia. This section was inaugurated as ALI X (Arts, Lifestyle, and Interests Experience), and "aims to be a haven for casual goers and hobbyists alike". Inaugural tenants included Happy Music, Remnant's Thrift Shop, and Erin's Artist's Lounge and Cafe, among others. [13] [14] [15] [16]
The mall currently has 64,500 square meters (694,000 sq ft) of retail space, and features environment-friendly air-conditioning and government services facilities. Among its tenants were Automatic Centre, Smart Communications, Globe Telecom, Philippine Airlines, Penshoppe, National Book Store, and more than 100 other shops, including dining, retail, and tech services shops.
The mall also features the Ali Mall Cinemas and the Ali Mall Government Center at the third level, where various government offices occupy the area, such as the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has a passport office located on the second level of the mall and opened its doors in February 2014. [17] Following the opening of the DFA office, more government agencies began occupying the Government Center area, located at the mall's second floor and is occupied by Pag-IBIG Fund, the National Bureau of Investigation, the Land Transportation Office, Philippine Postal Corporation, the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Trade and Industry, the QC Business Center, and the Barangay Socorro Satellite Office. The mall also features an events hall atrium at the lower ground floor, and a glass painting of Muhammad Ali named "Alive" by Monica Jane Valerio, which commemorates Ali's victory in Thrilla in Manila, located within the atrium at the mall's ground floor. [20]

Araneta City, formerly and still commonly known as Araneta Center, is a 35-hectare (86-acre) transit oriented, commercial mixed-use urban development in Quezon City, Philippines. Situated in Barangay Socorro in Cubao, and at the intersection of two major roads, Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) and Aurora Boulevard, the area offers retail, dining, entertainment, residential, office, lodging and parking facilities throughout the complex and hosts over 1 million people daily, due to its close proximity to transport terminals, including the railway stations of the MRT Line 3 and the LRT Line 2.
The Araneta Coliseum, also currently known by naming rights sponsorship as Smart Araneta Coliseum, is an indoor multi-purpose sports arena that is part of the Araneta City in the Cubao area of Quezon City, Philippines. Nicknamed as "the Big Dome", it is one of the largest indoor arenas in Asia, and one of the largest clear span domes in the world. The dome measures approximately 108.0 meters (354.3 ft) making it the largest dome in Asia from its opening in 1960 until 2001 when it was surpassed by the Ōita Stadium in Japan with a dome measuring 274.0 meters (899.0 ft).
Araneta Center–Cubao station is an elevated Light Rail Transit (LRT) station located on the LRT Line 2 (LRT-2) system in Cubao, Quezon City. It is named after the old name of Araneta City, a mixed-use development.

Robinsons Galleria, is a mixed-use complex and shopping mall located at EDSA (C-4) corner Ortigas Avenue in Quezon City, Metro Manila, the Philippines. Renovated and expanded in 1999 and in 2014, the five-level complex is the first ever fully first enclosed, air-conditioned mall in the Philippines, making it one of the oldest commercial buildings in the country. The Araneta City Cyberpark is a 8-hectare (20-acre) office development located in the Araneta City in Cubao, Quezon City. Located along the southern part of the mixed-use commercial development, the office complex is currently undergoing a ₱20 billion redevelopment under a new master plan, consisting of five green office towers, retail spaces, and an outdoor park. The ongoing development currently includes 2 towers completed, and one tower under construction, with 191,000 m2 (2,055,906.89 sq ft) of office space completed as of January 2021.
The Gateway Tower is a 31-storey mixed use skyscraper located in the Araneta City at Quezon City. The tower was named after the adjacent Gateway Mall and serves as the headquarters of the Araneta Group, replacing the Aurora Tower since 2014. Moreover, the tower sits on a rectangular lot located along General Aguinaldo Avenue and features retail and electronics stores, dining outlets, hair salons, office spaces, an open air rooftop garden, and an art gallery, while the tower's upper floors are also occupied by various call centers, franchising, and tech companies.
The Araneta City Bus Port (ACBP), also styled Araneta City Busport, is a bus station in Quezon City, Metro Manila, the Philippines. The bus station is currently one of two bus terminals in the Araneta City business district that link Metro Manila with the provinces in the country, including cities in the Luzon Archipelago via the Philippine Nautical Highway System.
The Ibis Styles Manila Araneta City is a 286-room hotel located in the Araneta City, Quezon City, Philippines. The development is currently under development with 12 out of the 18 buildings completed, with 6 more towers set to be constructed in the pipeline.
The Farmers Market is a wet market located at the Araneta City in Cubao, Quezon City. The market opened in 1975 and serves as one of the best and largest fresh produce markets both in Metro Manila and in the country. The market is owned by the ACI, Inc., and is monitored by the Quezon City Government.
