Prior to the Pacific War, Escolta Street was also home to the city's first standalone department stores, including H.E. Heacock, until then the largest department store in the Philippines, opening in 1900, and the Aguinaldo Department Store, the most premium store in the Philippines opening in 1921. Other notable stores in the 1920s and 1930s include the upscale La Puerta del Sol and Estrella del Norte. [1]
The first shopping mall of the enclosed, automobile-centered design type was Ali Mall in suburban Quezon City which opened in 1976. [2] [3] This was followed by Harrison Plaza in Malate district which opened later that same year. [4]
These super-regional supermalls each have over a hundred local and international stores and are anchored by at least one department store and supermarket or hypermarket. They are also the largest malls in Metro Manila which feature not just stores but also attractions: movie theaters, rides, skating rinks, bowling alleys and other recreational facilities. Each provides thousands of automobile parking spaces and are located mostly near rail stations and established business districts within the metropolis. These malls serve not only the Metro Manila and Greater Manila Area residents, but also local and foreign tourists.
Community or regional shopping centers in Metro Manila are built around one department store or supermarket and are enclosed. These shopping centers are located mostly in suburban residential areas of the metropolis and typically cater to the basic shopping needs of area residents.

Lifestyle centers in Metro Manila are located in upscale business districts and affluent areas like Makati CBD, Ortigas Center, and Bonifacio Global City. Many of these boutique malls are open-air and are popular dining and entertainment venues for Manila's elite.
Strip malls consist mainly of food outlets and several stores and businesses sharing one parking lot. These casual dining and retail centers have become popular hangouts among young professionals in Manila.

SM Supermalls, or simply SM, is a chain of shopping malls owned by the Philippines-based SM Prime. As of October 2024, it has a total of 95 malls. It also has 13 malls under construction. It was formerly known as Shoemart.
SM Megamall, is a shopping mall located in Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong, Metro Manila, Philippines. It is the third largest shopping mall in the Philippines and the thirteenth largest in the world. SM Megamall is developed and operated by SM Prime Holdings. The mall occupies a land area of approximately 10 hectares and has a total floor area of 474,000 square meters (5,100,000 sq ft). The mall has a maximum capacity of 4 million people.
Glorietta, also known as Ayala Malls Glorietta, formerly known as Quad, is a shopping mall complex in the Ayala Center, Makati, Metro Manila, Philippines. Bonifacio Global City is a central business district and major financial hub located in Taguig, Metro Manila, Philippines. It is located 11 kilometers (6.8 mi) southeast of the capital city of Manila. Capitol Commons is a mixed-use development in Oranbo, Pasig, Metro Manila, Philippines. It is a redevelopment of the former Rizal Provincial Capitol complex located in the village of Oranbo adjacent to the Ortigas Center financial district. The 10-hectare (25-acre) site being developed by Ortigas & Company Limited Partnership, the same developer behind Ortigas Center, features Pasig's first high-end shopping center called Estancia at Capitol Commons. Once completed, the P25-billion mixed-use commercial, residential and office development will have 35,000 square meters (380,000 sq ft) of retail space, 20,000 square metres (220,000 sq ft) of office space for knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) companies, and 280,000 square meters (3,000,000 sq ft) of residential units. The development is also home to the Capitol Commons Park, which takes up fifty percent of the development.
Vista Malls is a shopping mall chain of property developer Vista Land founded and chaired by Filipino billionaire and former politician Manny Villar. Walter Mart is a Filipino chain of community shopping malls located in Metro Manila, Central, and South Luzon. The chain operates its anchor stores that include Walter Mart Supermarket, Walter Mart Cinemas, Abenson Appliances and Abenson Home Furniture.
