The American General Center is a complex of several office buildings in Neartown Houston, Texas located along Allen Parkway. [1] [2] It is the global headquarters for Corebridge Financial, formerly American General.

Contents

The America Tower is a 590 ft (180m) tall skyscraper. It was completed in 1983 and has 43 floors. It is the 21st tallest building in the city. It serves as the headquarters of Baker Hughes. [3] It served as the former headquarters of Continental Airlines; it now houses AIG American General and BDO USA, LLP. The other buildings include the Life Building, the Wortham Tower, the Woodson Tower (a.k.a. the Liberty Tower), and the Riviana Building. [4]

History

On July 1, 1983 Continental Airlines's headquarters were located at the America Tower, and would remain there until relocation to Downtown Houston in 1998 and 1999. [1] [5] [6] [7] [8] Stephen M. Wolf, the president of Continental said that the company moved its headquarters because Houston became the largest hub for Continental. [9] During the existence of Texas Air Corporation in the 1980s, its headquarters were in the America Tower. [10] In September 1997, Continental announced that it would move its headquarters to Continental Center I. [11] Continental had occupied approximately 250,000 square feet (23,000 m2) in space in the America Tower before its lease expired in July 1998. [12]

In 1998 Andersen Consulting, now Accenture, announced that it would consolidate its existing Downtown Houston and suburban workforces into 153,000 square feet (14,200 m2) in the America Tower, with more than 1,100 employees based in the space. Lynn Cook of the Houston Business Journal described this as "an astonishing number for the size of Andersen Consulting's lease." [2] In 1999, realty firm Cushman & Wakefield moved its Houston office into the America Tower from the Wells Fargo Tower of Four Oaks Place in Uptown Houston. As of 1999 the building was 99% leased. [13]

American General Life Insurance Company is headquartered in the Life Building. [15]

Ebro Foods North America Riviana & New World Pasta is in the Riviana Building. [16] [17] The Consulate-General of Norway in Houston was in Suite 1185 in the Riviana Building. [4] [18] It has since relocated in another building in Neartown. [19]

Montrose is an area located in west-central Houston, Texas, United States and is one of the city's major cultural areas. Montrose is a 7.5 square miles (19 km2) area roughly bounded by Interstate 69/U.S. Highway 59 to the south, Allen Parkway to the north, South Shepherd Drive to the west, and Taft to Fairview to Bagby to Highway 59 to Main to the east. Montrose neighborhoods include Cherryhurst, Courtlandt Place, Hyde Park, Montrose, Vermont Commons, North and East Montrose, Mandell Place and Winlow Place. Montrose is also less well known by the moniker Neartown, encompassing Superneighborhood #24.

ExpressJet Airlines was a regional airline in the United States that operated from 1987 until 2022. It was headquartered in College Park, Georgia. The company began as Britt Airways and flew exclusively as Continental Express, the contracted codeshare partner for Continental Airlines. The name was changed to ExpressJet at the beginning of 1995 as the company began acquiring regional jets, replacing its fleet of turboprop aircraft. Along with flying as Continental Express, ExpressJet expanded flying under the Delta Connection brand from 2007 through 2008 and again from 2012 through 2018. Service as American Eagle was flown between 2012 and 2019 and service under the United Express brand began in 2009. ExpressJet also flew an independent operation under their own brand in 2007 through 2008. When Continental Airlines merged into United Airlines in 2012, the Continental Express operations were added to the United Express service. In September 2020, it exited the fee-for-departure airline market and temporarily ceased flights after the conclusion of its contract with its sole remaining mainline partner, United Airlines. In September 2021, ExpressJet resumed operations as both an air charter provider and a regional airline under its own brand aha!—short for "Air-Hotel-Adventure." The brand's route structure focused on the West Coast of the United States with a hub at Reno-Tahoe International Airport, and scheduled flights began on October 24, 2021. The airline, including its brand aha!, filed for bankruptcy on August 23, 2022, having ceased all operations the previous day. In July 2023, the airline announced plans to relaunch as an air charter service using a single leased Boeing 777.
