BOAC Flight 115 was a scheduled passenger flight from Heathrow Airport to Palmietfontein Airport in Johannesburg with several intermediate stops. On 26 October 1952, Flight 115 ran off the runway on takeoff at Ciampino Airport in Rome but all 43 on board survived. It was the first hull-loss of a Comet.
In 1949 the de Havilland Comet was the first passenger jet to fly and revenue service began in May of 1952, 6 months before the accident. G-ALYZ was a Comet 1A and the fifth Comet produced for the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC). It was en route from London to Johannesburg with stops in Rome and Cairo. 35 people boarded the plane heading to Cairo with 2 captains, 1 engineer and 1 navigator with 4 cabin crew. [2]
Flight 115 was operating a regular passenger service from London to Johannesburg. At the Rome airport the aircraft taxied to Runway 16, and then the aircraft began takeoff for the second leg to Cairo. The pilot rotated the nose at a speed of 75-80 knots and then at a speed of 112 knots he pulled back further on the control column to lift the airplane into the air. As the airplane reached an appropriate height in the air the captain called for the landing gear to be raised but the left wing suddenly dropped however control was quickly regained. The aircraft began to shake and the pilot thought the aircraft was beginning to stall, but despite two corrective actions of the control column, the shaking continued. Before the first officer had had time to raise the landing gear, the aircraft came down on the landing gear wheels and bounced. The pilot then realized that the aircraft's speed was not increasing and thought it was caused by loss of engine thrust. He was also aware that the aircraft was quickly approaching the end of the runway so the pilot abandoned the takeoff. The aircraft was moving too fast to stop on the runway and when it overran the end of the runway the aircraft struck an earthen mound and slid for 270 yd (810 ft), breaking off the landing gear and suffering severe damage. Despite a large fuel spill, no fire resulted. The only injuries reported were one passenger with a cut finger and one with slight shock. [3]
The cause of the crash was pilot input of an excessive nose-up command during the takeoff which lead to a stall. The after-accident report noted that the manufacturer's handbook included a caution in its description of the take off procedure, saying, "... care should be taken not to overdo [the nose up] with a consequent poor acceleration." Imperial Airways was an early British commercial long-range airline, operating from 1924 to 1939 and principally serving the British Empire routes to South Africa, India, Australia and the Far East, including Malaya and Hong Kong. Passengers were typically businessmen or colonial administrators, and most flights carried about 20 passengers or fewer. Accidents were frequent: in the first six years, 32 people died in seven incidents. Imperial Airways never achieved the levels of technological innovation of its competitors and was merged into the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) in 1939. BOAC in turn merged with the British European Airways (BEA) in 1974 to form British Airways.
The de Havilland DH.106 Comet is the world's first commercial jet airliner. Developed and manufactured by de Havilland in the United Kingdom, the Comet 1 prototype first flew in 1949. It features an aerodynamically clean design with four de Havilland Ghost turbojet engines buried in the wing roots, a pressurised cabin, and large windows. For the era, it offered a relatively quiet, comfortable passenger cabin and was commercially promising at its debut in 1952.

The de Havilland DH.114 Heron is a small propeller-driven British airliner that first flew on 10 May 1950. It was a development of the twin-engine de Havilland Dove, with a stretched fuselage and two more engines. It was designed as a rugged, conventional low-wing monoplane with tricycle undercarriage that could be used on regional and commuter routes. A total of 149 were built; it was also exported to about 30 countries. Herons later formed the basis for various conversions, such as the Riley Turbo Skyliner and the Saunders ST-27 and ST-28.

BOAC Flight 781 was a scheduled British Overseas Airways Corporation passenger flight from Singapore to London. On 10 January 1954, a de Havilland Comet passenger jet operating the flight suffered an explosive decompression at altitude and crashed, killing all 35 people on board.
South African Airways Flight 201 (SA201), a de Havilland Comet 1, took off at 18:32 UTC on 8 April 1954 from Ciampino Airport in Rome, Italy, en route to Cairo, Egypt, on the second stage of its flight from London, England to Johannesburg, South Africa. The flight crashed at around 19:07 UTC, killing all on board. The flight was operated as a charter by British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) using the aircraft registration G-ALYY, with a South African crew of seven, and carrying fourteen passengers.

The Hawker Siddeley HS-121 Trident is a British airliner produced by Hawker Siddeley. In 1957, de Havilland proposed its DH.121 trijet design to a British European Airways (BEA) request. By 1960, de Havilland had been acquired by Hawker Siddeley. The Trident's maiden flight happened on 9 January 1962, and it was introduced on 1 April 1964, two months after its main competitor, the Boeing 727. By the end of the programme in 1978, 117 Tridents had been produced. The Trident was withdrawn from service in 1995.

United Arab Airlines Flight 869 was an international scheduled passenger flight operated by a de Havilland DH-106 Comet 4C from Hong Kong via Bangkok to Cairo. On 19 July 1962 at 13:30 UTC, the plane departed from Hong Kong for the first leg of the flight with 18 passengers and 8 crew aboard. The flight was uneventful until commencing approach to Bangkok, when the plane crashed in the Khao Yai mountain range 96 km NE of Bangkok at 15:44 UTC. There were no survivors.
Japan Air Lines Flight 472 was a flight from London to Tokyo via Frankfurt, Rome, Beirut, Tehran, Bombay, Bangkok and Hong Kong. On September 24, 1972, the flight landed at Juhu Aerodrome near Bombay, India instead of the city's much larger Santacruz Airport and overran the runway, resulting in the aircraft being written off after being damaged beyond economic repair.
On 10 November 2008, Ryanair Flight 4102 from Frankfurt–Hahn Airport, in Hahn, Rhineland-Palatinate to Ciampino–G. B. Pastine International Airport, in Rome, Italy, suffered multiple bird strikes while landing. Of the 172 people on board, two crew and eight passengers received hospital treatment for minor injuries. The 8-month-old Boeing 737-8AS jet used for the flight received a massive amount of damage, which led to it being written off. This accident represents the fourth hull loss of a Boeing 737-800.
British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) was the British state-owned airline created in 1939 by the merger of Imperial Airways and British Airways Ltd. It continued operating overseas services throughout World War II. After the passing of the Civil Aviation Act 1946, European and South American services passed to two further state-owned airlines, British European Airways (BEA) and British South American Airways (BSAA). BOAC absorbed BSAA in 1949, but BEA continued to operate British domestic and European routes for the next quarter century. The Civil Aviation Act 1971 merged BOAC and BEA, effective 31 March 1974, forming today's British Airways.
On 2 May 1953, BOAC Flight 783, a de Havilland Comet jetliner registered G-ALYV and operated by British Overseas Airways Corporation, broke up mid-air and crashed after encountering a severe squall, shortly after taking off from Calcutta, India. All 43 passengers and crew on board were killed.
