The Burry Port and Gwendraeth Valley Railway (BP&GV) numbers 4 Kidwelly and 5 Cwm Mawr were small 0-6-0 ST steam locomotives, originally built by the Avonside Engine Company in May 1903 and April 1905 respectively.
They belonged to a series of seven 0-6-0 ST locomotives numbered 1–7 built between 1900 and 1907 for the BP&GV to replace older locomotives; five were built by Avonside and two by Chapman & Furneaux, each of the seven being different from the others. [1] The differences between nos. 4 and 5 were comparatively small: no. 5 had an extended smokebox, and was fitted with the vacuum brake. [2]
They both passed to the Great Western Railway (GWR) in July 1922, which assigned them to Diagram A114 and renumbered them 2194 Kidwelly and 2195 Cwm Mawr. They were sent to Swindon for overhaul in July 1923 and November 1922, but did not return to traffic until February 1926. The rebuilds were shown on Diagram B22; virtually new boilers (GWR code YF) were provided, and the bunkers were extended. They were then sent to Weymouth, to work along the quayside lines, for which a warning bell was also fitted. No. 2195 Cwm Mawr was withdrawn in March 1939; it was reinstated, without its name, in December 1939, and then worked at Bristol and Swindon. No. 2194 Kidwelly left Weymouth in 1940, and then mostly worked at Taunton. [2] Both passed to British Railways in 1948 but they were withdrawn in 1953 and neither was preserved.

The 4073 Class or Castle class were 4-6-0 steam locomotives of the Great Western Railway, built between 1923 and 1950. They were designed by the railway's Chief Mechanical Engineer, Charles Collett, for working the company's express passenger trains. They could reach speeds of up to 100 mph (161 km/h).
The first Locomotives of the Great Western Railway (GWR) were specified by Isambard Kingdom Brunel but Daniel Gooch was soon appointed as the railway's Locomotive Superintendent. He designed several different 7 ft 1⁄4 in broad gauge types for the growing railway, such as the Firefly and later Iron Duke Class 2-2-2s. In 1864 Gooch was succeeded by Joseph Armstrong who brought his standard gauge experience to the workshops at Swindon. To replace some of the earlier locomotives, he put broad gauge wheels on his standard gauge locomotives and from this time on all locomotives were given numbers, including the broad gauge ones that had previously carried just names.
The Great Western Railway 2900 Class or Saint Class was built by the Great Western Railway's Swindon Works. incorporated several series of 2-cylinder passenger steam locomotives designed by George Jackson Churchward and built between 1902 and 1913 with differences in the dimensions. The majority of these were built as 4-6-0 locomotives; but thirteen examples were built as 4-4-2. They proved to be a successful class which established the design principles for GWR 2-cylinder classes over the next fifty years.
The GWR 5700 Class, or 57xx class, was a class of 0-6-0 pannier tank steam locomotive, built by the Great Western Railway (GWR) and British Railways (BR) between 1929 and 1950. With 863 built, they were the most prolific class of the GWR, and one of the most numerous classes of British steam locomotive.
The GWR 1400 Class is a class of steam locomotive designed by the Great Western Railway for branch line passenger work. It was originally classified as the 4800 Class when introduced in 1932, and renumbered in 1946.
The 1361 Class were small 0-6-0ST steam locomotives built by the Great Western Railway at their Swindon railway works, England, mainly for shunting in docks and other sidings where track curvature was too tight for large locomotives.
The Great Western Railway (GWR) 1366 Class was a class of 0-6-0 pannier tank steam locomotive built in 1934. They were a useful design and because of their light weight and short wheelbase and were often used on dockside branches or other lines with sharp curvatures.
Note: During most of the period of operation of the BP&GVR the anglicised spellings of Welsh place names were in use, and for consistency are used in this article. The Company's registered name included the incorrect spelling Gwendreath due to an error by parliamentary draftsmen.

Powlesland and Mason were a company that provided steam locomotives and crews for shunting within Swansea Docks. The first name has sometimes been spelt "Powesland" and it is uncertain which spelling is correct.
The Daniel Gooch standard gauge locomotives comprise several classes of locomotives designed by Daniel Gooch, Superintendent of Locomotive Engines for the Great Western Railway (GWR) from 1837 to 1864.
Between 1854 when the Shrewsbury and Chester and Shrewsbury and Birmingham Railways were absorbed by the Great Western Railway, and 1864 when he moved south to Swindon Works, Joseph Armstrong occupied the post of the GWR's Locomotive Superintendent, Northern Division, at Wolverhampton Works. For ten years the task of providing new locomotives for the GWR's newly acquired standard gauge lines fell jointly to Armstrong and to his superior Daniel Gooch, the railway's principal Locomotive Superintendent who was based at Paddington.
The Cambrian Railways Class 89s were an 0-6-0 tender locomotive introduced by Jones in 1903 for general use over their system, upon grouping they became Great Western Railway class 15 and were reboilered from 1924 onwards with Swindon parts.

Barry Railway Class D were 0-8-0 steam tender engines of the Barry Railway in South Wales. They were built to a standard Sharp, Stewart and Company design modified by John Waddington Mann, the Chief Mechanical Engineer for the Swedish & Norwegian Railway. In fact, 20 of these locomotives were ordered by this railway. However the company ran into severe financial difficulty with the result that only one and a half locomotives were paid for by the S&N.
Barry Railway Class A were the first steam tank engines to be built for the Barry Railway in South Wales and had an 0-6-0T wheel arrangement. They were designed by John Wolfe Barry and built by Sharp Stewart.
