Barh is a sub division of Patna District. It is a town and one of the 6 sub-division of Patna District, Bihar in India. It is located on the southern bank of the Ganges. [1]

Population

According to the 2011 Census of India , Barh had a total population of 316,348 residents, with 162,354 males and 153,994 females. [2]

Administration

The Barh sub-division (Tehsil) is headed by an IAS or state Civil service officer of the rank of Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM).

Politics

Barh is a part of the Barh Assembly constituency under the Munger Lok Sabha constituency. It is also the oldest subdivision in India. [3]

History

Peace Treaty of Barh

In 1495, after the sack of Patna, Sikandar Lodi advanced towards Bengal, but a non-aggression pact was made between the Delhi and the Bengal armies. It was decided that the territory to the east of Barh would be controlled by Bengal's ruler, while those to the west would be controlled by the Delhi empire. [4]

Sarai

During the Mughal period, Barh had a large sarai with 200 rooms for travelers/traders built by Sher Shah Suri. [5]

Rennell's Survey

In 1776, James Rennell, also called the "Father of Indian Geography", surveyed Bengal and listed prominent destinations. [6]

Barh Railway line

On 10 November 1877, the Barh railway station was opened to the public. [7]

Plague

Between the 1890s to 1910, Barh and Patna were afflicted by the plague. It is believed that the 1898 plague came by sea by rats aboard infected ships, though it first appeared in the British India Steam Navigation Company's wharf. [8] The two main factors for the spread of the plague were believed to be the high presence of rats and houses with poor hygiene and bad ventilation. [8]

The population of the extended Barh subdivision decreased from 408,256 in 1891 to 365,327 in 1901 due to the plague. [9]

Sati incident

In 1928, Sampati Kuer, a young widow from Berhna village, committed sati on the funeral pyre of her deceased husband. The British government suspected foul play and sentenced 10 people to prison, including her brother Murlidhar Pande, as sati was outlawed 100 years earlier by the British government. [10]

NTPC Barh

NTPC Limited is India's largest power-generating company. The former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, laid the foundation stone of the main plant of stage 1 of NTPC Barh Super Thermal Power Station on 6 March 1999. [11]

NTPC Kanti also known as George Fernandes Thermal Power Plant Station is located in Kanti, Muzaffarpur, Bihar. George Fernandes was former Member of Parliament from Muzaffarpur constituency of Bihar. It is wholly owned subsidiary company of NTPC. The share of the company is 100% of the NTPC. The plant was not functional between 2003 and 2013; however, renovation of both older units paved the way for commercial production of electricity by the end of 2013.

Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited (BSPHCL), formerly Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB) is a state-owned electricity regulation board operating within the state of Bihar in India. BSEB was established in 1958 as a statutory corporation under the Electricity (Supply) Act, 1948. As of November 2012, BSEB has nearly 1,700 officers and 14,850 employees. The derated capacity comes to just 530 MW. The BSEB was unbundled on 2 August 2011. Power Finance Corporation was the main consultant for BSEB's restructuring.

Patna City, popularly known as Patna Saheb or Patna Sahib, is a city and one of the 6 Sub-divisions (Tehsil) in Patna district, Bihar, India. Patna City is an old area of Patna. Patna City history belongs to Patliputra. It is regarded as very sacred by the Sikhs in India. The tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh was born there. The Patna Saheb Gurudwara is considered to be one of the holiest of the five "Takhts" or seat of authority of the Sikhs. The place is named Harminder Takht though the Sikhs respectfully call it Patna Sahib. The famous Guru Gobind Sahib Gurudwara is an important shrine for Sikhs from all over the world. Ashok Rajpath (road) connects Patna City to Patna.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Barh Super Thermal Power Station</span> Power project in Bihar, India

Barh Super Thermal Power Station or NTPC Barh is located in Barh in the Indian state of Bihar. NTPC Barh is located barely four kilometres (2.5 mi) east of the Barh sub-division on National Highway-31 in Patna district. The project has been named a mega power project, and is owned by Indian energy company National Thermal Power Corporation.

Nabinagar Super Thermal Power Project is a coal-based thermal power plant located at Sivanpur village in Ankorha in Nabinagar taluk in Aurangabad district, Bihar. It was conceptualised in 1989 by the then Chief Minister of Bihar Satyendra Narayan Sinha who sent the proposal to set up a NTPC's super thermal power project at Nabinagar in Bihar's Aurangabad district to then Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi; but the project went into limbo as the following state governments failed to follow it. In 2007, Manmohan Singh's government finally put a stamp of approval on it.

Nabarun is a neighbourhood of Farakka, not identified in 2011 census, with a post office, in Farakka CD Block in Jangipur subdivision of Murshidabad district in the state of West Bengal, India.
