Koilwar (also spelt Koelwar) is a nagar panchayat town and corresponding community development block in Bhojpur district in the Indian state of Bihar. As of 2011, the population of Koilwar town was 17,725, in 2,893 households. [1] It lies on the Arrah-Patna railway route. It is one of the 14 blocks under Bhojpur district.
Koilwar is located at 25°34′N84°47′E / 25.567°N 84.783°E . It has an average elevation of 39 metres (128 ft). It is situated on the bank of Son River. [2]
Koilwar Bridge is situated on the River Sone; its steel rail road bridge called as Abdul Bari Bridge made before independence, is shown in the film Gandhi . The Koelwar bridge across the Sone river was built by the British in 1862. A two lane road (NH 30) runs just under the rail tracks. Sand mining near the pillars of this old bridge has created structural problems recently.
A famous Shiv Temple is the moonlight of the village. On every 14 January and on the eve of Mahashivratri a fair takes place near the temple.

In the 2001 India census, [3] Koilwar had a population of 19,925. Males constitute 61% of the population and females 39%. Koilwar has an average literacy rate of 55%, lower than the national average of 59.5%. Male literacy is 55%, female literacy 54%. 19% of the population is under 6 years of age.
The main commodities produced in Koilwar are paneer and tilkut. [1]
The Koilwar town is very well connected by roads, highways and Rail routes to various cities like Patna, Danapur, Bihta, Arrah, Buxar in Bihar; and Mughalsarai and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

Son River is a perennial river located in central India. It originates near Amarkantak Hill in Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district of Chhattisgarh and finally merges with the Ganges River near Patna in Bihar. The Sone River is the second-largest southern tributary of the Ganges after the Yamuna River. India's oldest river bridge Koilwar Bridge over Sone River connects Arrah with Patna. Sone river is famous for its sand across country. Multiple dam(s) and hydro-electric projects run on its course towards Ganges.

Danapur Cantonment, located on the outskirts of Patna, is the second oldest cantonment in India, after Barrackpur Cantonment, West Bengal. Koilwar Bridge, at Koilwar in Bhojpur spans the Sone river. This 1.44 km long, 2-lane wide rail-cum-road bridge connects Arrah with Patna, the capital of Bihar state in India. The bridge is named after Indian academic and social reformer Prof. Abdul Bari, and is presently the oldest operational railway bridge in India standing since 04 November 1862. It is shown in the 1982 Oscar award winning film Gandhi, directed by Richard Attenborough. From 1862 to 1900, Koilwar bridge remained as the longest river bridge in India.

New Koilwar Bridge is named after Indian mathematician and Padma Shri awardee Vashishtha Narayan Singh (1946-2019). New Koilwar Bridge is 500 metres north and parallel to the existing 2-lane wide Koilwar Bridge. The construction work of all 6-lanes completed and Bridge is fully opened to public on 14 May 2022.
