The 2007 Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council election took place on 3 May 2007 to elect members of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council in South Yorkshire, England. One third of the council was up for election and the Labour party stayed in overall control of the council. [1] [2]

The Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley is a metropolitan borough of South Yorkshire, England; its main town is Barnsley.

South Yorkshire County of England

South Yorkshire is a metropolitan county in England. It is the southernmost county in the Yorkshire and the Humber region and had a population of 1.34 million in 2011. It has an area of 1,552 square kilometres (599 sq mi) and consists of four metropolitan boroughs, Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. South Yorkshire was created on 1 April 1974 as a result of the Local Government Act 1972.Its largest settlement is Sheffield.

Background

Prior to the election, a number of Barnsley Independent Group councillors had removed themselves from the grouping and sat as Independent. Those Independents had earlier lost a seat in a Penistone by-election to the Conservatives, and suffered a defection to Labour in St. Helens. The Conservatives had also suffered a defection to the BIG in Penistone West. [3]

Conservative Party (UK) Political party in the United Kingdom

The Conservative Party, officially the Conservative and Unionist Party, is a centre-right political party in the United Kingdom. Presently led by Theresa May, it has been the governing party since 2010. It presently has 314 Members of Parliament in the House of Commons, 249 members of the House of Lords, and 18 members of the European Parliament. It also has 31 Members of the Scottish Parliament, 12 members of the Welsh Assembly, eight members of the London Assembly and 9,008 local councillors. One of the major parties of UK politics, it has formed the government on 45 occasions, more than any other party.

Election result

The results saw Labour retain a majority of 3 with 33 councillors, after losing 2 seats to the Barnsley Independent Group. [4] The Barnsley Independent Group moved to 20 seats after ousting 2 long time Labour councillors Alan Schofield and Alex Vodden. [4] The Conservatives remained on 5 seats, the Liberal Democrats 2 and 3 councillors were non-aligned. [4] The British National Party failed to win any seats, but did come second in the wards of Central, Dearne North and Darton West. [4] Overall turnout increased slightly to 33%. [3]

The Liberal Democrats are a liberal political party in the United Kingdom. They presently have 11 Members of Parliament in the House of Commons, 96 members of the House of Lords, and one member of the European Parliament. They also have five Members of the Scottish Parliament and a member each in the Welsh Assembly and London Assembly. The party reached the height of its influence in the early 2010s, forming a junior partner in a coalition government from 2010 to 2015. It is presently led by Vince Cable.

The British National Party (BNP) is a far-right, fascist political party in the United Kingdom. It is headquartered in Wigton, Cumbria, and its current leader is Adam Walker. A minor party, it has no elected representatives at any level of UK government. Founded in 1982, the party reached its greatest level of success in the 2000s, when it had over fifty seats in local government, one seat on the London Assembly, and two Members of the European Parliament.

Elections to Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council were held on 4 May 1978. One third of the council was up for election. The election resulted in the Labour retaining control of the council. The sole Democratic Labour councillor elected in 1973 successfully defended his seat as an Independent and the only Independent elected in 1973 unsuccessfully defended his seat as a Conservative.

1982 Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council election

Elections to Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council were held on 6 May 1982, with one third of the council up for election with an additional vacancy in Royston. Prior to the election, Labour had gained a seat from Residents in a Dodsworth by-election, with another Residents councillor in Wombwell North defecting to the Labour grouping, offsetting a by-election loss in Penistone East to the recently formed SDP-Liberal Alliance. Alliance had also seen defections to them from the Independent Labour councillor in Hoyland East and the defending councillor in Darton.

1991 Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council election

Elections to Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council were held on 2 May 1991, with one third of the council up for election. Prior to the election, the defending councillor in Penistone West had changed their affiliation from Residents to Independent, ending the Residents presence on the council that had endured since its creation in 1973. The election resulted in Labour retaining control of the council.
