Canadian Pacific 1238 is a preserved G5c class 4-6-2 "Pacific" type steam locomotive built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in June 1946. It was purchased by George Hart, who used it for excursion service in the 1960s. It was later sold to Jack Showalter, who operated it on his Allegany Central Railroad from the 1970s to the mid-1990s. In late December 2023, No. 1238 was purchased by the Waterloo Central Railway, and they have plans to restore the locomotive to operating condition.
No. 1238 was constructed in June 1946 at the Montreal Locomotive Works in Montreal, Quebec, as the sixth member of the Canadian Pacific Railway's (CP) G5c class. [1] It was initially assigned to pull passenger trains throughout Quebec and Ontario, and as the CP dieselized their locomotive fleet, No. 1238 was reassigned to pull freight trains. It was retired from revenue service by 1959, and it sat idle for the next five years.
In December 1964, No. 1238 was purchased by steam locomotive historian George M. Hart, who founded Rail Tours Incorporated to host several steam-powered excursion trains throughout the Northeastern United States. [2] No. 1238 was moved to York, Pennsylvania, where Hart and his crews restored the locomotive back to service in 1966. [3] From there, it began pulling excursion trains on the Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad (MPA) between York and Baltimore, Maryland, alongside Hart's other steam locomotives, including CP G5d No. 1286, CP 4-6-0 No. 972, and Reading 0-6-0 st No. 1251. [4] The locomotive would also pull trains on mainlines owned by nearby class 1 railroads, such as the Reading, the Western Maryland (WM), the Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ), and the Lehigh and Hudson River (L&HR).
In 1967, another steam locomotive preservationist, Ross E. Rowland, began leasing both Nos. 1238 and 1286 from Hart to pull his own excursion trains over the CNJ mainline between Jersey City, New Jersey, and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. In early February 1968, a furnace at a Reading, Pennsylvania, power plant broke down, and Hart had Nos. 1238 and 1286 sent to the plant to provide emergency heated steam. [5] Both locomotives consequently had to be replaced on a February 18 Newark-Wilkes-Barre excursion with CP G5d No. 1278 and Great Western 2-10-0 No. 90. [5]
Nos. 1238 and 1286 vacated Reading after the plant's furnace was repaired. In August 1968, without much sentiment to keep his G5 locomotives any longer, George Hart sold Nos. 1238 and 1286 to John F. Rowe of the Red Clay Valley Railway Equipment and Leasing Company. [6] Rowe subsequently made plans to use both locomotives for his own excursion trains. [6]
On May 18, 1969, No. 1238 pulled a doubleheaded twenty-car excursion train with No. 1286 over Penn Central trackage from Union Station in Baltimore over the Port Deposit Branch and the Columbia Branch to the Transportation Center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on behalf of the Baltimore Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS). However, that trip was plagued with various mechanical issues, and both locomotives were in control of Penn Central employees. Along the Port Deposit branch, No. 1238 threw out one of its piston packings, causing its running gear to be disabled, while No. 1286 began losing steam due to firebox issues, and these factors caused the excursion to arrive in Harrisburg later than anticipated. After a photo session took place at the Harrisburg station, Nos 1238 and 1286 were returned to Baltimore over the former Northern Central line after dawn with a Penn Central diesel locomotive coupled in front as a precaution. Both G5s were subsequently repaired in Baltimore. By 1973, John Rowe was no longer using No. 1238 for excursion service.
In 1973, No. 1238 was sold along with No. 1286 to Jack Showalter, who moved it to Covington, Virginia, for an extensive overhaul. Showalter founded the Alleghany Central tourist railroad (ACRR) along with his family, and it originally lied over the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway's (C&O) 15-mile (24 km) Hot Springs branch between Covington and Intervale. [7] No. 1238 was returned to service in 1975, and it began pulling tourist trains between Covington and Hot Springs at 15 mph (24 km/h) along a tributary of the James River. Throughout June 1981, No. 1238 was loaned to the Southern Railway to fill in for their own steam locomotives, which were all out of service at the time. The locomotive pulled four excursion trains for the Southern in and out of Alexandria, Virginia, for three weekends during that month. [8] In October 1983, the USF&G Insurance company hired the ACRR to provide an excursion train for their patrons. No. 1238 pulled the train on the Chessie System's mainline from Covington to Clifton Forge, Virginia, and then through the Allegheny Mountains to the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. After the 1984 operating season, however, rising insurance costs and ownership disputes forced the ACRR to vacate Covington, and the Hot Springs branch was ripped up with the rails being sold for scrap.
In 1988 Showalter made a deal with the Scenic Railroad Development Corporation (SRDC) to run his trains on their newly restored trackage, which was formerly used by the WM and the Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad between Cumberland and Frostburg, Maryland. The ACRR subsequently changed their name to the Allegany Central Railroad, and after their equipment was moved to Ridgeley, West Virginia, No. 1238 began service for the line in the spring of 1989, with No. 1286 being brought back the following year. This operation did not last long, however, since in February 1991, the contract that allowed Showalter to operate on the SRDC's trackage was close to expiring, and disputes prevented him from renewing it. The ACRR operated their last train between Cumberland and Frostburg on December 8, 1990, before the SRDC changed their name to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad to operate their own trains with their own locomotives, such as Lake Superior and Ishpeming 2-8-0 No. 34, and eventually, C&O 2-6-6-2 No. 1309.
By the beginning of 1992 Showalter moved his equipment to Gordonsville, Virginia, for storage while he was searching for another tourist line to operate his trains on. [9] During this time, the ACRR's name was changed again to the Virginia Central Railroad (VCRR). On October 23, 1993, No. 1238 performed a tripleheader with No. 1286 and EMD GP9 No. 40 to pull the VCRR's rolling stock over the CSX mainline to Staunton. On October 30, Showalter used both G5s to pull one doubleheaded excursion train on the mainline between Charlottesville and Clifton Forge, as well as a train on October 31 between Charlottesville and Gordonsville. In the beginning of November, CSX raised the insurance costs for Showalter to run his trains on their mainline, and without the ability to afford such a high price, Showalter ceased mainline operations for the VCRR. No. 1238 was subsequently stored on the Shenandoah Valley Railroad (SVRR) while Showalter began searching for another railroad to run his trains on. Beginning in 2004, No. 1238 was being stored in Verona with tarps covering it for protection from the weather. Showalter had passed away in November 2014.
In 2015, No. 1238 was sold off to a private owner from Alberta as part of a liquidation sale. [10] [11] In July of that year, No. 1238 was lifted onto a flatcar with its tender being placed on another along with No. 1286's tender, and the locomotive began its journey to Manitoba in early August. On September 13, No. 1238 arrived on the Prairie Dog Central Railway in Winnipeg. [12]
On July 28, 2023, the Waterloo Central Railway (WCR) of St. Jacobs, Ontario, announced their plans to purchase No. 1238, after raising $150,000. [13] [14] By New Year’s Eve, the WCR raised the required amount of money and purchased the G5c, and they continued to raise funds to move No. 1238 to their property for an operational restoration. [15] [16] [17]
Nickel Plate Road 765 is a class "S-2" 2-8-4 "Berkshire" type steam locomotive built for the New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad, commonly referred to as the "Nickel Plate Road". In 1963, No. 765, renumbered as 767, was donated to the city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, where it sat on display at the Lawton Park, while the real No. 767 was scrapped at Chicago in 1964.
Great Western 90 is a class 12-42-F 2-10-0 "Decapod" steam locomotive owned and operated by the Strasburg Rail Road (SRC) east of Strasburg, Pennsylvania. Built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in June 1924, No. 90 originally pulled sugar beet trains for the Great Western Railway of Colorado, and it was the largest of the company’s roster. In April 1967, No. 90 was purchased by the Strasburg Rail Road, and has been pulling excursion trains there, ever since.
Canadian Pacific 2816, also known as the "Empress", is a preserved class "H1b" 4-6-4 Hudson-type steam locomotive built by the Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) in December 1930 for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP). It is the only non-streamlined H1 Hudson to be preserved.
The USRA Light Pacific was a USRA standard class of steam locomotive designed under the control of the United States Railroad Administration, the nationalized railroad system in the United States during World War I. It was the standard light passenger locomotive of the USRA types, with a 4-6-2 wheel arrangement in the Whyte notation, or 2′C1′ in UIC classification.
The Allegany Central Railroad was a tourist railroad that took place in three different locations from the 1970s to the 1990s. It originally operated in Covington, Virginia, before ownership disputes moved it to Cumberland, Maryland. From there, ownership disputes moved it again to Staunton, Virginia. Rising insurance costs shut down the railroad altogether by the end of the 1990s.
Canadian Pacific 1293 is a class "G5d" 4-6-2 "Pacific" type steam locomotive built in June 1948 by the Canadian Locomotive Company for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Built for passenger service, No. 1293 served an eight-year career until being replaced by diesel locomotives where it was then retired in 1959. Purchased in 1964 by F. Nelson Blount for use at his Steamtown site in Bellows Falls, Vermont, No. 1293 was easily restored to operation for hauling fan trips for the general public. 1293 was later sold to the Ohio Central Railroad in 1996 for tourist train service. Today, the locomotive is out on display at the Age of Steam Roundhouse in Sugarcreek, Ohio.
Canadian Pacific 1278 is a class "G5d" 4-6-2 "Pacific" type steam locomotive built by the Canadian Locomotive Company for the Canadian Pacific Railway. After being retired from revenue service, the locomotive was purchased in 1965 by F. Nelson Blount for excursion trains at his Steamtown, U.S.A. collection. The locomotive was sold to Gettysburg Railroad in 1987, and it pulled excursion trains between Gettysburg and Biglerville, but it was subject to shoddy maintenance by inexperienced crews. The locomotive was retired from excursion service in 1995, after suffering a firebox explosion in June. As of 2024, the locomotive is on static display at the Age of Steam Roundhouse in Sugarcreek, Ohio.
Canadian Pacific 1246 is a preserved G5c class 4-6-2 "Pacific" type steam locomotive built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in June 1946. In 1965, it became one of three G5 locomotives to be purchased by Steamtown, U.S.A. for excursion service. After operating in Scranton for a few years in the 1980s, No. 1246 was sold at an October 1988 auction to the Railroad Museum of New England with plans to restore and operate it, and it was initially put on static display. As of 2023, No. 1246 is stored at the Railroad Museum of New England.
Illinois Central No. 790 is a preserved 2-8-0 “Consolidation” steam locomotive, built by ALCO’s Cooke Works in 1903. In 1959, No. 790 was saved from scrap and purchased by Lou Keller, and he used it to pull excursion trains in Iowa. In 1965, the locomotive was sold to a New York businessman, who, in turn, sold it the following year to F. Nelson Blount, the founder of Steamtown, U.S.A.. As of 2024, No. 790 is on static display at Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
Reading Blue Mountain and Northern 425 is a 4-6-2 light "Pacific" type steam locomotive originally built in 1928 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Gulf, Mobile & Northern Railroad. After the GM&N was consolidated into the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio in 1940, the locomotive was renumbered No. 580 and served in passenger service before being retired in 1950. The locomotive is currently owned and operated by the Reading & Northern, based out of Port Clinton, Pennsylvania in excursion service. At the end of 2022, No. 425 was taken out of service for its mandatory Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) 1,472-day inspection and overhaul.
Canadian Pacific 2317 is a class "G-3c" 4-6-2 "Pacific" type steam locomotive built by the Montreal Locomotive Works for the Canadian Pacific Railway.
The Reading T-1 was a class of 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotives owned by the Reading Company. They were rebuilt from thirty "I-10sa" class 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type locomotives between 1945 and 1947. Out of the thirty rebuilt, four survive in preservation today, those being numbers 2100, 2101, 2102, and 2124.
Grand Trunk Western No. 4070 is an S-3-a class 2-8-2 USRA Light Mikado steam locomotive, and it was originally built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in December 1918 for the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR) as No. 474. It was later re-numbered to 3734 by the Grand Trunk Western (GTW), after the GTR was absorbed into Canadian National (CN). In the late 1950s, the locomotive received a larger tender from an S-3-c class locomotive, and it was further re-numbered to 4070.
Reading Blue Mountain and Northern 2102 is a preserved "T-1" 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotive. Originally built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in March 1925 as an "I-10sa" 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type locomotive for the Reading Company, No. 2102 was rebuilt by the Reading's own locomotive Shops as a 4-8-4 "Northern" in September 1945, and it was used for pulling heavy coal trains for the railroad until being retired from revenue service in 1956.
Reading 2100 is the prototype of the T-1 class 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotives constructed in September 1945 for use by the Reading Company (RDG). Constructed from an earlier 2-8-0 "Consolidation" type locomotive built in May 1923 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, No. 2100 pulled heavy freight and coal trains for the Reading until being retired from revenue service in 1956. Between 1961 and 1964, No. 2100 was used to pull the RDG's Iron Horse Rambles excursions alongside fellow T-1's Nos. 2124 and 2102. After the rambles ended, No. 2100 was sold along with No. 2101 in 1967 to a scrapyard in Baltimore, Maryland.
Canadian Pacific 1286 is a preserved G5d class 4-6-2 "Pacific" type steam locomotive built in 1948 by the Canadian Locomotive Company. It was sold to George Hart, who used it to pull excursion trains in the 1960s. It was eventually sold again to Jack Showalter, who operated it on his Allegany Central Railroad from the early 1970s to the late 1990s. As of 2023, No. 1286 is stored under private ownership at the Prairie Dog Central Railway.
U.S. Sugar 148, formerly Florida East Coast 148, is a 4-6-2 steam locomotive built in April 1920 by American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Richmond, Virginia, originally for the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC). It hauled passenger and freight trains between Jacksonville and Miami, Florida, including FEC's Overseas Railroad to Key West, Florida until the line was destroyed in 1935. The locomotive was sold in 1952 to U.S. Sugar Corporation (USSC) to haul sugarcane trains in Clewiston, Florida.
Canadian Pacific 972 is a preserved D-10j class 4-6-0 "Ten-wheeler" type steam locomotive built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in 1912. It was used for pulling branchline and mainline freight trains for the Canadian Pacific Railway, until it was removed from service in 1959. It eventually became famous for pulling multiple mainline excursion trains throughout the state of Pennsylvania under the ownership of George Hart. It was sold to the Strasburg Rail Road in 1995, who had an initial plan to rebuild it to pull their own tourist trains. As of 2024, No. 972 is stored outdoors and disassembled in the Strasburg Rail Road's yard.
Savannah and Atlanta 750, formerly Florida East Coast 80, is a 4-6-2 “Light Pacific” steam locomotive built in January 1910 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, New York, originally for the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) as No. 80. Throughout the 1930s, FEC had sold of several of their locomotives, with No. 80 being sold in 1935 to the Savannah and Atlanta Railway, where it was renumbered to 750. The locomotive pulled commuter passenger trains and occasional mixed freight trains for the S&A, until the railroad dieselized in the early 1950s. In 1962, the locomotive was donated to the Atlanta Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, who began using the locomotive to pull occasional excursion trains. No. 750 was subsequently leased to the Southern Railway for use to pull trains for their new steam excursion program, and the lease ended in 1984. From 1985 to 1989, the locomotive pulled excursion trains for the New Georgia Railroad around Atlanta, until it was retired, due to firebox issues. As of 2022, No. 750 remains on static display inside the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, Georgia.
Canadian Pacific 2839, nicknamed Beer Can, is a class H1c 4-6-4 Royal Hudson built by the Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) in 1937 and was retired in 1959. It was restored to operating condition in 1979 by the Southern Railway for their Steam Excursion Program and was sold to the Blue Mountain and Reading Railroad before it was retired again in 1985. It is now on static display in Sylmar, California.
