Central Aceh Regency (Indonesian : Kabupaten Aceh Tengah) is a regency in Aceh province of Indonesia. It is located on Sumatra island. Formerly this regency covered a much larger area; on 4 June 1974, the Southeast Aceh Regency was separated from the Central Aceh Regency, [2] and on 18 December 2003 the Bener Meriah Regency was separated from the remaining Central Aceh Regency.

The remaining regency covers an area of 4,527.58 square kilometres and had a population of 175,527 according to the 2010 census, [3] which rose to 215,576 at the 2020 Census; [4] the official estimate as at mid 2021 was 223,833 - comprising 113,388 males and 110,445 females. [1] Most of its inhabitants are Gayo. Central Aceh is famous for its Lake Laut Tawar. Its capital is Takengon, in Lut Tawar District.

The residual regency is the main centre of coffee production within Aceh province and is home to the Gayo people who are mostly concentrated in this regency and in the neighbouring Bener Meriah Regency and Gayo Lues Regency. [5] [6]

Geography

The regency borders Pidie Regency, Bireuen Regency and Bener Meriah Regency to the north, East Aceh Regency to the east, Gayo Lues Regency to the south and West Aceh, Pidie, and Nagan Raya regencies to the west.

Central Aceh District is a highland area with an altitude between 200 – 2600 metres above sea level and with an area of 4,527.58 km2.

Administrative districts

The regency is divided administratively into fourteen districts (kecamatan), tabulated below with their areas and their populations at the 2010 Census [3] and the 2020 Census, [4] together with the official estimates as at mid 2023. [1] The table also includes the locations of the district administrative centres, the number of villages (gampong) in each district, and its post code(s).

Politics

Its current regent is Drs. Shabela Abubakar, while his vice regent is H. Firdaus SKM. They have held the positions since 28 December 2017. [7]

There are several tourist attractions, such as Danau Laut Tawar, Pantan Terong (scenery attraction), Gunung Burni Telong (hot spring), Taman Buru Linge Isak (hunting), Gua Loyang Koro, Loyang Pukes, Loyang Datu, Burni Klieten (hiking), and Krueng Peusangan (rafting).

Bireuën Regency is a regency of Aceh, the westernmost province of Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra, and was created on 4 October 1999 from the former western districts of North Aceh Regency. The capital is the town of Bireuën, 105 miles east of the provincial capital, Banda Aceh. The regency covers an area of 1,796.97 square kilometres and had a population of 340,271 people according to the 2000 Census; at the 2010 Census it had a population of 389,288, which had risen to 436,418 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 453,242 - comprising 224,053 males and 229,189 females. The regency formerly covered a much larger area, but on 4 October 1999 the island districts of Simeulue were separated out to form their own regency, and on 10 April 2002 two additional regencies - Aceh Jaya and Nagan Raya - were created from parts of West Aceh; the residual regency currently covers an area of 2,927.95 square kilometres and had a population of 173,558 at the 2010 Census and 198,736 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 205,108.

Aceh Jaya Regency is a regency of Aceh Province of Indonesia. It is located on the west side of the island of Sumatra, and was formed on 10 April 2002 from districts which had formerly been the northern part of West Aceh Regency. The regency covers an area of 3,872.23 square kilometres and had a population of 76,782 people at the 2010 census, 86,368 at the 2015 census and 93,159 at the 2020 Census, of whom 47,264 were male and 45,895 female; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 99,717. The seat of the Regency is at Calang, in Krueng Sabee District. The main crops grown in the Regency are rice, rambutan, durian, orange, water melon, rubber, palm and coconut oil.

Southeast Aceh Regency is a regency in the Aceh province of Indonesia. It is located on the island of Sumatra. In 1974, the Southeast Aceh Regency was created by being separated from the Central Aceh Regency; however in 2002 the northern part of this regency was itself split away to form the new Gayo Lues Regency. The regency now covers an area of 4,242.04 square kilometres and had a population of 179,010 at the 2010 census and 220,860 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2023 was 229,368. Blangpidie or Blang Pidie is a town in the Aceh province of Indonesia and it is the capital of Southwest Aceh Regency. Blangpidie is located on the west coast of Sumatra island and the main Banda Aceh — Medan road passes through the town.

Takengon is a town in Aceh, Indonesia. The town itself sits on three administrative districts of the Central Aceh Regency - Bebesen, Kebayakan, and Lut Tawar, and acts as the seat of Central Aceh Regency. The town is in the highlands of western Sumatra, situated on the shores of Lake Laut Tawar. The region around Takengon is well known for its coffee. Takengon is a plateau with cool air at an altitude of about 1200 m above sea level.

Legislative elections were held in Indonesia on 9 April 2014 to elect 136 members of the Regional Representative Council (DPD), 560 members of the People's Representative Council (DPR) and members of regional assemblies at the provincial and regency/municipality level. For eligible voters residing outside Indonesia, elections were held on 5 or 6 April 2014 based on the decision of the electoral commission of each different countries. The 2014 Lampung gubernatorial election was held concurrently.
