Parliamentary elections were held in Chile on 7 March 1965. [1] The Christian Democratic Party won a majority of seats in the Chamber of Deputies, the first time a party had held a majority for several decades. The party also became the largest party in the Senate.

Chile republic in South America

Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a South American country occupying a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage in the far south. Chilean territory includes the Pacific islands of Juan Fernández, Salas y Gómez, Desventuradas, and Easter Island in Oceania. Chile also claims about 1,250,000 square kilometres (480,000 sq mi) of Antarctica, although all claims are suspended under the Antarctic Treaty.

The Christian Democratic Party is a Christian democratic political party in Chile and governs as part of the Nueva Mayoría coalition.

The Honourable Chamber of Deputies of the Republic of Chile is the lower house of Chile's bicameral Congress. Its organisation and its powers and duties are defined in articles 42 to 59 of Chile's current constitution.

Electoral system

The term length for Senators was eight years, with around half of the Senators elected every four years. This election saw 21 of the 45 Senate seats up for election. [2]

Elections for the members of the Senate were held on November 10, 1953 in the Philippines. Incumbent President Elpidio Quirino of the Liberal Party lost his opportunity to get a second full term as President of the Philippines to former Defense Secretary Ramon Magsaysay of the Nacionalista Party. Quirino's running mate, Senator Jose Yulo lost to Senator Carlos P. Garcia. Vice President Fernando Lopez did not run for re-election and ran for the Senate instead, in which he emerged as the candidate with the most votes. This was the first time that an elected president did not come from the Senate. To further compound the Liberal Party's woes, they also failed to win any seats in the Senate in this election.

2000 Haitian parliamentary election

Parliamentary elections in 2000 were held in Haiti in two separate sets of elections, on May 21, 2000 and July 9, 2000, for all 83 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and nineteen seats in the Senate, and later that year, at the same time as November 26, 2000 presidential election for eight Senate seats. The legislative elections and presidential elections in the fall ran largely smoothly, however the first and second rounds of the spring elections generated the most controversy.

1961 Chilean parliamentary election

Parliamentary elections were held in Chile on 5 March 1961. The Radical Party remained the largest party in the Chamber of Deputies and also became the largest party in the Senate.

1973 Chilean parliamentary election

Parliamentary elections were held in Chile on 4 March 1973. The Confederation of Democracy alliance won a majority of seats in both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.

1969 Chilean parliamentary election

Parliamentary elections were held in Chile on 2 March 1969. The Christian Democratic Party lost their majority in the Chamber of Deputies, but remained the largest party in both houses.

1958 Belgian general election

General elections were held in Belgium on 1 June 1958. The result was a victory for the Christian Social Party, which won 104 of the 212 seats in the Chamber of Representatives and 53 of the 106 seats in the Senate. Voter turnout was 93.6% in the Chamber election and 93.7% in the Senate election. Elections for the nine provincial councils were also held.

1921 Belgian general election

General elections were held in Belgium on 20 November 1921. The result was a victory for the Catholic Party, which won 70 of the 186 seats in the Chamber of Representatives. Voter turnout was 91.1% in the Chamber election and 91.0% in the Senate election.

1968 Puerto Rican general election

General elections were held in Puerto Rico on 5 November 1968. Luis A. Ferré of the New Progressive Party (PNP) was elected Governor. In the House of Representatives elections the PNP won a plurality of the vote, but the Popular Democratic Party won a majority of the seats. They also won a majority of seats in the Senate. Voter turnout was 78.4%.

1993 Paraguayan general election

General elections were held in Paraguay on 9 May 1993. In the country's first honest election, as well as the first with no military candidates since 1928, Juan Carlos Wasmosy of the Colorado Party won the presidential election. The Colorado Party remained the largest party in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, albeit with only a plurality. The opposition Authentic Radical Liberal Party and National Encounter Party held a majority of the seats in both chambers, later supplemented by the Colorado Reconciliation Movement which broke away from the Colorado Party. Voter turnout was 69.0% in the presidential election, 67.6% in the Chamber elections and 69.4% in the Senate elections.

1894 Belgian general election

Full general elections were held in Belgium on 14 October 1894, with run-off elections held on 21 October 1894.

1912 Belgian general election

Full general elections were held in Belgium on 2 June 1912.

1996 Czech Senate election

Senate elections were held in the Czech Republic for the first time on 15 and 16 November 1996, with a second round on 22 and 23 November. the first after independence. The result was a victory for the Civic Democratic Party, which won 32 of the 81 seats. Voter turnout was 34.9% in the first round and 30.6% in the second.

1998 Czech Senate election

Senate elections for a third of chamber were held in the Czech Republic on 13 and 14 November 1998 with a second round on 20 and 21 November.

2002 Czech Senate election

Senate elections were held in the Czech Republic on 25 and 26 October 2002, with a second round on 1 and 2 November. Voter turnout was just 24.1% in the first round and 31.7% in the second.

1978 Brazilian legislative election

Parliamentary elections were held in Brazil on 15 November 1978. The National Renewal Alliance Party won 231 of the 420 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 15 of the 23 seats in the Senate. Voter turnout was 81.7%.

Parliamentary elections were held in Chile on 6 March 1949. Although the Social Christian Conservative Party received the most votes in the Senate elections, the Liberal Party won the most seats, whilst the Radical Party remained the largest party in the Chamber of Deputies.

1953 Chilean parliamentary election

Parliamentary elections were held in Chile on 1 March 1953. The Agrarian Labor Party emerged as the largest party in the Chamber of Deputies, whilst the Liberal Party won the most seats in the Senate.
