The Chilean presidential primaries of 2013 were held in Chile on Sunday 30 June 2013. It was the first such election to be run by the government under a new primary law published in December 2012.

Chile republic in South America

Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a South American country occupying a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage in the far south. Chilean territory includes the Pacific islands of Juan Fernández, Salas y Gómez, Desventuradas, and Easter Island in Oceania. Chile also claims about 1,250,000 square kilometres (480,000 sq mi) of Antarctica, although all claims are suspended under the Antarctic Treaty.

According to the law, primaries are voluntary, but its results are binding. The two main political coalitions decided to participate: Former president Michelle Bachelet won the Nueva Mayoría primary with 73% of the vote, while former senator and minister Pablo Longueira won the Alianza primary with 51%.

Michelle Bachelet 34th & 36th President of Chile

Verónica Michelle Bachelet Jeria is a Chilean politician who served as President of Chile from 2006 to 2010 and again from 2014 to 2018, the first woman to occupy the position. After leaving the presidency in 2010 and while not immediately reelectable, she was appointed the first executive director of the newly created United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In December 2013, Bachelet was reelected with over 62% of the vote, bettering the 54% she obtained in 2006. She was the first President of Chile to be reelected since 1932.

Pablo Longueira Chilean politician

Juan Pablo Longueira Montes is a Chilean right-wing politician and industrial civil engineer who served as Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism of Chile from 2011 to 2013. He is a member of the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) and served as a Senator before being appointed by President Sebastián Piñera to serve in the Cabinet. He was previously a deputy from 1990 until 2006.

Longueira withdrew on 17 July and was replaced by Evelyn Matthei, who had not participated in the primaries. Bachelet defeated Matthei in the runoff election held on 15 December 2013.

Evelyn Matthei mayor, politician, economist

Evelyn Rose Matthei Fornet is a Chilean politician who served as Minister of Labor and Social Security under Chilean President Sebastián Piñera until July 2013. She was the Independent Democrat Union Party's nominee for President of Chile in the 2013 elections. Today she is the mayor of Providencia, her term being 2016-2020.

Both candidates were officially registered on 1 May 2013. [1] Affiliates from both Alianza parties (RN and UDI) plus independent electors were allowed to vote.

The former Minister of Defense said on 22 April 2012 that he was willing to participate with Laurence Golborne and Pablo Longueira (both also ministers) in a three-way primary. [2] He was proclaimed as candidate by his party on 6 November 2012. [3]

The Minister of Economy was proclaimed as his party's candidate minutes after the resignation of then candidate Laurence Golborne on 29 April 2013. He left his cabinet post a day later. [4]

Laurence Golborne Chilean politician

Laurence Nelson Golborne Riveros is a Chilean engineer and entrepreneur. He was minister of public works until November 7, 2012, when he announced his decision to run for President of Chile. He previously had been bi-minister of Mining and Energy in the administration of President Sebastián Piñera. He withdrew from the presidential campaign on April 29, 2013, after two consecutive public scandals.

Miguel Juan Sebastián Piñera Echenique is the 36th and current President of Chile, following his election in December 2017. He also served as the 34th President from 2010 to 2014.

Independent Democratic Union political party

The Independent Democratic Union is a Chilean right-wing, conservative political party, founded in 1983. Its founder was the lawyer, politician and law professor Jaime Guzmán, a civilian who collaborated with Augusto Pinochet and a member of the Opus Dei. Guzmán was a senator from 1990 until his assassination on April 1, 1991.

Nueva Mayoría candidates

All four candidates were officially registered on 30 April 2013. [8] Affiliates from all Nueva Mayoría parties plus independent electors were allowed to vote.

The former President from 2006 to 2010 declared her intention to run for the presidency on 27 March 2013 during an act in El Bosque Commune (a poor suburb of Santiago), a few hours after arriving from New York City, where she had been working as head of UN Women before quitting two weeks before. [9] On 7 April 2013 the Broad Social Movement (MAS) proclaimed Bachelet as their candidate. [10] On 13 April 2013 Bachelet was proclaimed by the PS and the PPD, [11] as agreed on in December 2012. [12] On 25 May 2013 both the Communist Party [13] and the Citizen Left movement [14] decided to support Bachelet's candidacy.

Current senator. He says he will compete in a Concertación primary as long as they are held in a transparent way. Otherwise he says he may run directly as president outside of the coalition. [15] On 30 June 2013 he was proclaimed by the PRSD as their pre-candidate for a Concertación primary. [16]

A primary was held on 19 January 2013 to determine the Christian Democratic Party's pre-candidate for the presidency. This primary was organized by the party and not under the new primary law. The contenders were Claudio Orrego and Ximena Rincón. Orrego won the primary with 59% of the vote. [17]

  • Claudio Orrego, former minister and mayor, had said in January 2012 that he would seek reelection as mayor of Peñalolén in the October 2012 election, but that he did not rule out running for president. [18] However, on 3 March 2012 he launched his candidacy for the presidency. [19]
  • Ximena Rincón, senator, had expressed her willingness to compete in a Concertación primary during a television interview on 23 December 2011. [20]

Former Finance Minister during President Michelle Bachelet's tenure. He said he was willing to compete in a Concertación primary only if Bachelet decides not to run for reelection. [22] In May 2012 he declared he had changed his mind and that now he would compete regardless of Bachelet's participation. [23] He officially launched his pre-candidacy on 16 November 2012. [24] On 2 May 2013, already registered to compete in primaries, he condemned the Nueva Mayoría pact for failing to register candidates for legislative primary elections and threatened to quit the competition and run directly in the November election. [25] On 6 May 2013 he backpedaled, after party leaders pledged to carry out legislative primary elections wherever there were more than two candidates. [26]

National Renewal (Chile) political party in Chile

National Renewal is a liberal conservative political party belonging to the Chilean centre-right political coalition called Chile Vamos in conjunction with the Independent Democratic Union (UDI), the Independent Regionalist Party (PRI) and Political Evolution (Evópoli). The party president is the deputy Mario Desbordes, and its principal leaders are Sebastián Piñera, current President of Chile and Andrés Allamand, former minister of defense, former presidential candidate and Senator.

Huar Island

Huar Island or Guar Island is an island of Calbuco Archipelago located in the Reloncaví Sound. The island is located about 15 km (9 mi) northeast of Calbuco and 20 km (12 mi) south of Puerto Montt. There are 5 settlements in the island and 5 schools: Quetrolauquén, Alfaro, Nalcahue, Chucagua y Colhue. The island was the last place of the Chono people.

Camilo Ballesteros Chilean activist

Camilo Igor Ballesteros Briones is a Chilean physical education undergraduate student and member of the Chilean Communist Youth. He was the president of the University of Santiago de Chile Student Federation (Feusach) in 2010-2011 and became of the main spokespersons of the Confederation of Chilean Students (Confech) during the movement for better access to quality education.

Marcel Henri Claude Reyes is a Chilean economist, academic, and political activist. He was an independent candidate to become President of Chile in the Chilean presidential election, 2013, and has been endorsed by the Humanist Party.

Franco Parisi Chilean economist.

Franco Aldo Parisi Fernández is a Chilean business engineer and economist. He received recognition for doing radio and television programs about economy along with his brother Antonino Parisi, and has been nicknamed "the economist of the people". In 2012 he launched his independent candidacy for president for the 2013 elections in Chile. Parisi ideologically identifies himself as a social liberal.

New Majority (Chile) Chilean political coalition with parties ranging fom center-left to left

The New Majority was a Chilean centre-left electoral coalition from 2013 to 2018, composed mainly of centre-left political parties supporting the presidential candidacy of Michelle Bachelet in the 2013 election.

MAS Region

The MAS Region, known until 2014 as Broad Social Movement was a Chilean left-wing political party founded by Alejandro Navarro in 2008.

Claudio Orrego Chiilean politician

Claudio Benjamín Orrego Larraín is a Chilean lawyer and Christian Democrat politician, former minister of President Ricardo Lagos Escobar, and former mayor of the commune of Peñalolén. He was a candidate for president of Chile in 2013, but lost the primary election against Michelle Bachelet, José Antonio Gómez, and Andrés Velasco.

Political Evolution Chilean Political Party

Political Evolution, also known in Spanish by its shorthand Evópoli, is a Chilean center-right political party, founded in 2012, which groups independents that are not part of the Independent Democratic Union, National Renewal and the Independent Regionalist Party, the other members of Chile Vamos. The party defines itself as a liberal platform for the people who look for a "modern center-right who proposes as the central axis of their proposal the appreciation of diversity, the emphasis on encouraging local communities and the pursuit of social justice".

Amplitude is a Chilean classical-liberal political party founded in January 2014. Although initially grouped as centre-right independents that had no militancy in the parties of the Alliance, the party's leanings were later grouped with the "liberal center" and the party is currently associated with other movements outside the coalition.

Eduardo Engel Chilean economist

Eduardo Engel is the former President and current board member of the think tank Espacio Público and Professor at the Department of Economics of the University of Chile. From 2001 to 2012 he was Professor of Economics at the Yale University. He chaired the Presidential Advisory Council on Conflicts of Interest, Influence Peddling, and Corruption – also known as the Engel Commission – in 2015.

Concertación presidential primary, 2005

The presidential primaries of the Concertation of Parties for Democracy of the year 2005 was the electoral system to define the presidential candidate of such Chilean coalition for the presidential election of 2005. It confronted Michelle Bachelet Jeria, candidate by the Socialist Party (PS), the Party for Democracy (PPD), and the Radical Social Democratic Party (PRSD), and Soledad Alvear Valenzuela, candidate for the Christian Democratic Party of Chile (PDC). However, the process remained unfinished after Alvear retired from competition months before the completion of the primary.

New Majority presidential primary, 2013

The presidential primaries of the New Majority in 2013 was the method of election of the Chilean presidential candidate of the parties Christian Democrat, Radical Social-Democrat, For Democracy, Socialist, Movimiento Amplio Social, Communist and Citizen Left and, in addition to the left-wing and center-left independents, grouped in the "New Majority" pact, for the 2013 election. On that same date, the conglomerate also planned to hold its parliamentary primaries in districts and/or districts where appropriate; However, on 1 May it was decided that such primaries would not be carried out at the official level.

Alianza presidential primary, 2013

The presidential primaries of the Alliance of 2013 were the method of election of the presidential candidate of such Chilean center-right coalition, for the presidential election of 2013. On that same date the conglomerate would also realize its parliamentary primaries in the districts but the UDI decided not to participate in them, being reduced to the candidates of National Renewal (RN).

Chilean presidential primaries, 2017

The Chilean presidential primaries of 2017 were held in Chile on Sunday 2 July 2017. It was the first election in the country's history in which Chileans were permitted to vote from abroad.

Sumemos is a Chilean political coalition that brings together two parties and a liberal center political movement. It was officially presented on January 13, 2016 in an event held in the building of the former National Congress of Chile.
