Chimaeropsis is an extinct genus of cartilaginous fish related to modern chimaeras, known from the Jurassic of Europe.

Taxonomy

The genus and species Chimaeropsis paradoxa was originally erected in 1887 by Zittel, based on a "‘fairly well-preserved skeleton", which was around 1 metre (3.3 ft) long found in the Upper Jurassic Plattenkalk limestones of Germany. This specimen, while partially described by both Zittel and Riess in 1887 and later again by Reiss in 1895, was never properly figured and is assumed to have been destroyed by bombings during World War II. As the only other known specimens of the species were fragmentary, this left much of the anatomy of the species enigmatic for most of the 20th century and early 21st century. In 1965, Patterson placed it as the only known member of its family, the Chimaeropsidae, and closely related to the family Myriacanthidae within the clade Myriacanthoidei. [1] In modern taxonomic schemes, Myriacanthoidei has been placed as closely related to modern chimaeras, with both groups placed within the Chimaeriformes. [2]

In 2018, a new complete skeleton of C. paradoxa was from the Plattenkalk limestones was mentioned in a conference abstract [3] and then fully described in 2025, illuminating the anatomy of the species. [1] This study considered the placement of Chimaeropsis as a myriacanthoid within its own family separate from myriacanthids valid. [1]

In addition to C. paradoxa, two other species have been recognised, these include C. franconicus (originally described as a species of Myriacanthus ) known from a single fin spine found around Rabenstein in Bavaria, Germany, also dating to the Late Jurassic, [1] as well as C. foussi, which was erected from a single fragmentary tooth plate found in limestone deposits from near Ethe, Belgium, dating to the Sinemurian stage of the Early Jurassic. [2]

Description

The newly described complete specimen of C. paradoxa described in 2025 has a body length of around 63 centimetres (25 in). Unlike members of Myriacanthidae, the rostrum of C. paradoxa is very short and blunt, with the head making about 25% of the total length, and over half as deep as it is long. The head is covered in dermal plates, which includes 4 pairs and one unpaired plate, which have a tuberculate texture. The tail fin is homocercal (having equally sized upper and lower lobes). The dorsal fin spine lacks denticles running along its posterior face but has them running along the vast majority (around 95%) of the length of the front-facing (anterior) edge of the spine. These denticles vary irregularly in size, are ornamented with striations, and arranged into a somewhat irregular alternating pattern on either side of the midline of the spine. C. franconicus differs from C. paradoxa in having denticles on both the back and front-facing edges of the dorsal fin spine. The body was covered in scales, about 1 millimetre (364 in) across, which are mostly symmetrical and star-like, with rays projecting outwards from a central flared base, though some bilaterally symmetrical branching scales are also present. Like other chimaeriforms, Chimaeropsis has a dentition made up of tooth plates. These include an unpaired symphyseal plate at the front of the lower jaw, as well as a pair of tooth plates on the lower jaw posterior to the symphyseal tooth plate, with the upper jaw having two pairs of tooth plates. Ecology

The teeth of Chimaeropsis, like those of other myriacanthoids, served to crush prey. Chimaeropsis is one of three known holocephalans known from the "Solnhofen Archipelago", alongside the true chimaeras Ischyodus and Elasmodectes . [1]

<i>Helicoprion</i> Genus of fossil fishes

Helicoprion is a genus of extinct shark-like eugeneodont fish. Almost all fossil specimens are of spirally arranged clusters of the individuals' teeth, called "tooth whorls", which in life were embedded in the lower jaw. As with most extinct cartilaginous fish, the skeleton is mostly unknown. Fossils of Helicoprion are known from a 20 million-year timespan during the Permian period from the Artinskian stage of the Cisuralian to the Roadian stage of the Guadalupian. The closest living relatives of Helicoprion are the chimaeras, though their relationship is very distant. The unusual tooth arrangement is thought to have been an adaption for feeding on soft-bodied prey, and may have functioned as a deshelling mechanism for hard-bodied cephalopods such as nautiloids and ammonoids. In 2013, systematic revision of Helicoprion via morphometric analysis of the tooth whorls found only H. davisii, H. bessonowi and H. ergassaminon to be valid, with some of the larger tooth whorls being outliers.

Ischyodus is an extinct genus of chimaera. It is the most diverse and long-lived chimaera genus, with over 39 species found worldwide spanning over 140 million years from the Middle Jurassic to the Miocene. Almost all species are only known from tooth plates, with the exception of the Jurassic species I. quenstedti. Complete specimens of I. quenstedti from the Late Jurassic of Germany most closely resemble the genus Callorhinchus amongst living chimaera genera. It is sometimes placed in the "Edaphodontidae", a unclearly defined group of chimaera with an uncertain position within the clade, while other authors place it into Callorhinchidae along with Callorhinchus, a position that has been supported by at least some phylogenetic analyses. It is suggested therefore to probably have had a similar ecology to living Callorhinchus.

Edaphodon was a fish genus of the family Callorhinchidae. As a member of the Chimaeriformes, Edaphodon was a type of rabbitfish, a cartilaginous fish related to sharks and rays. The genus appeared in the Aptian age of the Lower Cretaceous and vanished in the Pliocene. It was most prominent during the Late Cretaceous. Many Edaphodon species were found in the Northern Hemisphere, but species from the Southern Hemisphere are also known.

Ornithoprion is a genus of extinct cartilaginous fish in the family Caseodontidae. The only species, O. hertwigi, lived during the Moscovian stage of the Pennsylvanian, between 315.2 to 307 million years ago, and is known from black shale deposits in what is now the Midwestern United States. The discovery and description of Ornithoprion, performed primarily via radiography, helped clarify the skull anatomy of eugeneodonts; a group which includes O. hertwigi and which were previously known primarily from isolated teeth. The genus name, which is derived from the ancient Greek órnith- meaning 'bird' and príōn meaning 'saw', was inspired by the animal's vaguely bird-like skull and the saw-like appearance of the lower teeth. <i>Palaeocarcharias</i> Extinct genus of sharks

Palaeocarcharias is an extinct genus of shark, known from the Jurassic of Europe. It has only a single named species, Palaeocarcharias stromeri, which is known from exceptionally preserved specimens from the Late Jurassic (Tithonian) of Germany and France. Isolated teeth of indeterminate species from England extend the range of the genus back to the Middle Jurassic (Bathonian). Morphologically, it closely resembles carpet sharks (Orectolobiformes), and is around 1 metre (3.3 ft) in total body length. However, it shares greater similarities in tooth development with mackerel sharks (Lamniformes), including the absence of orthodentine, and has been suggested to the earliest known member of the Lamniformes or a member of a sister group to the Lamniformes. A 2018 study suggested that should be classified as the sole member of the order Palaeocarchariiformes, but a subsequent 2023 study questioned this and favoured placement in Lamniformes. A 2024 study of a specimen from Canjuers suggested that as that it was in fact a true carpet shark, perhaps a member of Orectolobidae.

The Eugeneodontidae is an extinct family of cartilaginous fish known from the Carboniferous, Permian, and potentially Devonian periods of the United States, Iran, and possibly Belgium, Poland and Russia. The eugeneodontids are known primarily from fossilized teeth, as well as the remains of the jaws, gills and in some species nearly complete skeletons with coatings of dermal denticles. The genera Bobbodus, Gilliodus and the type genus Eugeneodus are included within the family. Eugeneodontidae is considered the sister group to the family Caseodontidae, and the two are included together within the suborder Caseodontoidea and the order Eugeneodontida. The type genus, and by extension the family and the order Eugeneodontida are named in honor of Paleontologist Eugene S. Richardson Jr.

<i>Paredestus</i> Extinct genus of cartilaginous fish

Paredestus is a monotypic genus of extinct eugeneodont holocephalan from the Early Triassic of Canada. The type and only species, P. bricircum represents the last known member of the superfamily Edestoidea and among the last known eugeneodonts. It was named in 2008 based on tooth and jaw material, with the holotype representing the only known specimen.

There are currently two recognised genera known from largely complete remains, Chondrenchelys from the Visean of Scotland, and Harpagofututor from the Serpukhovian aged Bear Gulch Limestone of Montana, United States. Both genera have elongate, eel-like bodies, with their mouths having tooth plates similar to those of living chimaeras, to which they share numerous anatomical similarities indicating a close relationship. Isolated tooth plates assigned to the genus Platyxystrodus likely belong to members of the family, which would extend the range of the group into the late Carboniferous.
