Communia is an unincorporated community located in Clayton County, Iowa, United States, in the south half of section 8, Volga Township. The area was established as a German colony in 1847.
In early 1847 a group of pioneers, consisting of nine Germans (among them, Heinrich Koch) and one Frenchman, met in St. Louis to set off for new land under the direction of Joseph Venus. The group traveled north by steamer to the area of Dubuque. After buying necessary provisions, the group left on foot with only one wagon and three oxen to the northwestern area of Volga Township.
After one night of rest the men immediately began building and organizing the area. During the first year, three log houses and one blacksmith shop were built. The men welcomed anyone who wished to join, no matter how much or how little they contributed, and over the next few years the colony began to flourish.
The community prided themselves for the peaceful and welcoming environment they had created. The colony maintained a good relationship with the large Native American population and regularly traded with other emerging colonies within the area.
In 1851, the German communist Wilhelm Weitling came to Communia and became its administrator.
Despite the great success of the colony, the area dissolved in 1858 after much of the land and property was sold off by various families. [1] The population of Communia was just 12 in 1902. [2]
Clayton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,043. Its county seat is Elkader. The county was established in 1837 and was named in honor of John M. Clayton, United States Senator from Delaware and later Secretary of State under President Zachary Taylor.
Littleport is an unincorporated community and former city in Clayton County, Iowa, United States. After the Volga River flood of May 16, 1999, much of the town was destroyed and most residents moved away. At the 2000 Census, there were 26 residents. As of the 1960 Census, there had been 119 residents. There had been 139 people in 1950 and more than 200 people in 1916. The town was laid out in 1857 by Dennis Quigley and platted on May 21, 1860, but remained of little importance until the coming of the railroad in 1874. The town was not officially incorporated until 1907. Around this time, it had three general stores, a bank, blacksmith shop, Catholic church, German Lutheran church, an independent school district and a creamery. Somewhat later, it also had two taverns. It was officially disincorporated in 2005.

The Amana Colonies are seven villages on 26,000 acres (110 km2) located in Iowa County in east-central Iowa, United States: Amana, East Amana, High Amana, Middle Amana, South Amana, West Amana, and Homestead. The villages were built and settled by German Radical Pietists, who were persecuted in their homeland by the German state government and the Lutheran Church. Calling themselves the True Inspiration Congregations, they first settled in New York near Buffalo in what is now the town of West Seneca. However, seeking more isolated surroundings, they moved to Iowa in 1856. They lived a communal life until 1932.
