"Controlla" is a song by Canadian rapper Drake, recorded for his fourth studio album Views . The song was released as the fourth single from the album in the US on June 7, 2016. [3] The dancehall song [1] was written by Drake, Matthew Samuels, Dwayne Chin-Quee, Stephen McGregor, Moses Davis, Donald Dennis, Gary Jackson, Patrick Roberts, Andrew Thomas, and produced by Boi-1da, Supa Dups, Di Genius, TheFinal1, Allen Ritter and Charles "Jamandass da Terminator" Omondi.

It reached number 27 in Canada, number 18 in the UK, and number 16 on the US Billboard Hot 100. "Controlla" was the second dancehall single to be released from Views, along with "One Dance" and "Too Good".

Pitchfork listed "Controlla" on their ranking of the 100 best songs of 2016 at number 62. [4]

Background

Prior to the album's release, "Controlla" was one of two tracks from Views leaked online; The leaked version featured dancehall artist Popcaan. [5] The song was still included on the album without Popcaan's contributions and an additional Drake verse plus a Beenie Man sample.

Production and composition

"Controlla" was written by Drake, Matthew Samuels, Allen Ritter, Dwayne Chin-Quee, Stephen McGregor, Moses Davis, Donald Dennis, Gary Jackson, Patrick Roberts, Andrew Thomas, and produced by Boi-1da, Supa Dups, and Charles "Jamandass da Terminator" Omondi. In addition to Drake's lead vocals, the track contains samples of "Tear Off Mi Garment" performed by Beenie Man, though sources compared the song to Rihanna's "Work", the same track Drake was featured on. It has been covered by Paramore, Mabel, Benny Sings, Yaeji, Cornelius, John Mayer, and Ben Tankard.

"Going Bad" is a song by the American rapper Meek Mill featuring the Canadian rapper Drake. Dancehall pop is a sub-genre of the Jamaican genre dancehall that originated in the early 2000s. Developing from the sounds of reggae, dancehall pop is characteristically different in its fusion with western pop music and digital music production. Dancehall pop is also different from dancehall in that most songs use lesser Jamaican Patois in lyrics––allowing it to be globally understood and consumed. It also incorporates the key pop music elements of having melodies, hooks, and the verse-chorus format. Additionally, the genre moves away from the reggae and roots reggae music origins in social and political protest, now lyrically centering on partying, dancing, and sexuality.

"Knife Talk" is a song by Canadian rapper Drake featuring American rappers 21 Savage and Project Pat. It was released on November 16, 2021, as the third single from Drake's sixth studio album Certified Lover Boy. The song was produced by Metro Boomin and Peter Lee Johnson.

"We Caa Done" is a song by Jamaican singer Popcaan featuring Canadian rapper Drake. It was released on 6 January 2023 through the latter's record label, OVO Sound, as the lead single from the former's fifth studio album, Great Is He. The song was written alongside Tresor, who produced it with Batundi.
