Dance Sport, also known as competitive dancing, has gained popularity in India over the years. It combines elements of dance, athleticism, and artistic expression.

Dance Sport involves competitive performances in various dance styles. Dancers compete in different categories, showcasing their skills, precision, and creativity. The All India DanceSport Federation (AIDSF) serves as the national sports federation for DanceSport in India.

Jhinuk Alvares is an internationally successful Indian ballroom dancer. [1] Sahira Jain has won gold medals for Latin dance in the National Dance Sport Championship for two years in a row. [2]

Types of Dance Sport

Competitions

Ballroom

The third India Open Latin Ballroom DanceSport Championship was held in January 2019. [9]

The 12th National Dance Sport Championships were held in Meerut in July 2022. [10]

Breaking

The first National Breaking Championships was held Mumbai in 2021. [11] [12]

The Red Bull BC Cypher organised annually in Mumbai is the national breaking competition. [4] The initial edition was in 2015. [13]

A controversy emerged in 2023 when the Government of India blocked Indian breakers from participating in the Asian Games. [14] The experience would have been beneficial for the breakers to prepare for the Olympics. [15]

Training and Education

Numerous dance academies and schools offer training in dance sport. These institutions provide classes in both ballroom and breaking styles, catering to beginners as well as advanced dancers. [16] [17] Workshops and masterclasses by international dancers are also common.

Challenges and future prospects

Dance sport in India faces challenges such as limited funding, the need for greater recognition and support from sports authorities, and a lack of widespread awareness compared to established dance forms like classical and Bollywood styles. [18] [19]

Canada DanceSport (CDS) is the governing body for Dancesport in Canada, with disciplines including competitive ballroom dancing and breakdancing. It has been a member of the World DanceSport Federation since 1979 and is recognized by the Canadian Olympic Committee. CDS sanctions the annual Canadian Closed Championships.

Air India Football Club is a football section of the same-named Indian institutional multi-sports club. Founded by Anand Prajapati in 1952, the club is based in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Sponsored by Air India, the club previously played in the Mumbai Football League, and now in the MFA Elite Corporate League.

The Red Bull BC One is an annual international breakdancing (B-Boy) competition, estabilished in 2004. The competition is organised by the beverage company Red Bull. Its first event was held in Biel, Switzerland in 2004.

He is also a recipient of the Prestigious Shakti Samman given to him in form of a Sword by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.

Sergei Chernyshev, a.k.a. Bumblebee, is a Russian competitive breakdancer. Chernyshev, competing under the nickname 'Bumblebee', won the individual B-Boys gold medal at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, where breakdancing made its debut as a part of the Youth Olympics.

Rajeswari Vaidyanathan is a Tedx Speaker, trainer, performer and a choreographer of International Latin Ballroom Dance forms. She is the founder of a dance school called VR DanceSport, which is the largest Latin Ballroom dance school in India providing International level social and competitive training.

Breaking competitions at the 2024 Summer Olympics are scheduled to run from 9 to 10 August at Place de la Concorde, marking the sport's official debut in the program and the first dancesport discipline to appear in Summer Olympic history. Following its successful debut at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, breaking is confirmed as one of the three additional sports, along with sport climbing and surfing approved for Paris 2024. The competition will witness a total of thirty-two breakers stage in face-to-face single battles.

Rachael Gunn is an Australian breakdancer and academic researching the "cultural politics of breaking". She is a lecturer at Macquarie University in the Department of Media, Communications, Creative Arts, Language and Literature.
