The 1862–63 United States House of Representatives elections were held on various dates in various states between June 2,1862,and November 3,1863,during the American Civil War and President Abraham Lincoln's first term. Each state set its own date for its elections to the House of Representatives before the first session of the 38th United States Congress convened on December 7,1863. The congressional reapportionment based on the 1860 United States census was performed assuming the seceded states were still in the union,increasing the number of congressional districts to 241. West Virginia was given three seats from Virginia after the former broke away from the latter to rejoin the union as a separate state. The seceded states remained unrepresented and left 58 vacancies. Republicans lost 22 seats and the majority,while Democrats gained 28.

Primary elections,in which party nominees were chosen,were held on June 10,2014.

In 2019,he successfully ran for the Virginia House of Delegates in district 40,defeating Republican incumbent Tim Hugo. The majority of the pre-redistricted 40th district's population and landmass was located in Fairfax County with a small part in Prince William County. Helmer currently represents the 10th district post-redistricting,which is located entirely in Fairfax County.
The 2021 Virginia gubernatorial election was held on November 2,2021,to elect the next governor of Virginia. The election was concurrent with other elections for Virginia state offices. Incumbent Democratic Governor Ralph Northam was ineligible to run for re-election,as the Constitution of Virginia prohibits governors from serving consecutive terms. Businessman Glenn Youngkin won the Republican nomination at the party's May 8 convention,which was held in 37 polling locations across the state,and was officially declared the nominee on May 10. The Democratic Party held its primary election on June 8,which former Governor Terry McAuliffe easily won.

He was minority leader of the Virginia House of Delegates from 2022 to 2024. On January 10,2024,he became Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates. The 2021 Virginia attorney general election was held on November 2,2021,to elect the next attorney general of Virginia. Democratic Attorney General Mark Herring attempted to win a third term. Herring initially planned to run for governor,but decided to run for re-election. Herring faced Republican nominee Jason Miyares in the general election. Herring conceded defeat at 5:02 PM EST the following day,November 3. Miyares became the first Cuban-American and Hispanic to be elected to statewide office in Virginia. Miyares was later sworn in on January 15,2022.
Danielle Walker is an American politician and community activist,who served as a Democratic member of the West Virginia House of Delegates from 2018 until her resignation in 2023. Through her tenure,Walker was the only Black woman serving in the West Virginia Legislature. In June 2022,Walker was elected vice chair of the West Virginia Democratic Party,she later resigned as vice chairwoman after her selection as the leader of the American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia.
The 2023 Virginia House of Delegates election took place on November 7,2023,concurrently with elections for the Virginia Senate,to elect members of the 163rd Virginia General Assembly. All 100 delegates were elected to two-year terms from single-member districts. Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20,2023. Democrats gained 3 seats,winning back control with a 51–49 majority after having previously lost it in 2021.
The 2023 Virginia Senate election was held on Tuesday,November 7,2023,concurrently with elections for the Virginia House of Delegates,to elect senators to all 40 seats in the Senate of Virginia for the 163rd and 164th Virginia Assembly. Nomination primaries held through the Department of Elections were held June 20,2023. These were the first elections held following redistricting as a result of the 2020 census. The Democrats retained control of the Senate.
