The Downtown Tunnel, [1] sometimes referred to as the St. Louis Freight Tunnel, [2] is a historic railroad tunnel beneath Washington Avenue and Eighth Street in downtown St. Louis. Completed in 1874, it carried freight and passenger trains between the Eads Bridge and the rail yards in the Mill Creek Valley, bypassing busy downtown streets. It closed in 1974 and sat dormant for nearly two decades before its rehabilitation in 1993 for use by MetroLink, the light rail system in Greater St. Louis.
City leaders had wanted a wagon bridge to the heart of the city to highlight downtown St. Louis. However, economics required that it be a railroad bridge, but there was no space for railroads on downtown streets. Therefore, a tunnel was authorized to connect the Eads Bridge to the Missouri Pacific Railroad to the south (and later to Union Station).
The designer of the Eads Bridge, James B. Eads, worked out the specifications for the tunnel. [3] It would be a cut-and-cover tunnel 4,460 feet (1,360 m) long and 30 feet (9.1 m) below street level. [1] Several problems arose during construction of the bridge and tunnel including design changes, inflated land and labor costs, and renegotiated contracts that escalated construction costs 46% over initial estimates. The tunnel structure was completed by June 24, 1874, and the bridge would open less than a month later on July 4. [4]
When it first opened, the tunnel had few users and had already been spun off as the St. Louis Tunnel Railroad Company led by William Taussig. [4] In 1875, Taussig would supervise the opening of the first Union Depot on Poplar Street, between 11th and 12th streets near the mouth of the tunnel. [4] At that time, many railroads did not have licenses to operate in Missouri and the company eventually defaulted on its debts and a federal court appointed J.P. Morgan and Solon Humphreys as receivers. In 1878, the newly formed St. Louis Bridge Company purchased the bridge and tunnel out of bankruptcy for $2 million, a third of its original cost, then transferred it in 1880 to interests controlled by Jay Gould. [5] [6]
By 1882, roughly 272 trains were using the tunnel per day. These trains were steam engines burning a soft, sulphureous bituminous coal that "choked" the tunnel with smoke. Coke burning engines were tried, but offered no improvement. [7] Originally the tunnel was built with four ventilation shafts but these proved insufficient for the volume of traffic. In response, general manager Taussig directed engineer C. Shaler Smith to try mechanical ventilation. [7] The result was a circular ventilation shaft 37 feet in diameter at the base, 15 feet at the top, and 130 feet tall. The fan was 15 feet in diameter and 9 feet wide powered by a 192 horsepower engine. [7] Once complete the fan operated 24/7 and the four older ventilation shafts were permanently closed. The engineers that operated it lived in a building erected around the ventilation shaft. [7] The structure was built above the tunnel near St. Charles Street and has since been demolished. [8]
In 1889, Jay Gould was instrumental in the creation of the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis (TRRA), who took ownership of the bridge and tunnel. [9] Gould died in 1892, but his involvement in the TRRA led to the construction of Union Station in 1894. [6] Due to the increasing dimensions of railroad cars, the tunnel saw its last train; an Amtrak passenger train in 1974. Freight and passenger traffic then switched to the MacArthur and Merchants bridges. [9]
In 1971, regional transit planners identified the Airport/Central Corridor alignment as the region's primary target for further study. In the 1987 draft environmental impact statement, light rail was selected as the region's preferred mode alternative. [10] [11] : 203 In 1989, after it was determined the downtown portion would use the Eads Bridge and existing tunnel for light rail, the city of St. Louis swapped the MacArthur Bridge for the Eads Bridge with the Terminal Railroad Association. [9] In 1991, rehabilitation began on the subway tunnel for MetroLink with it reopening in 1993. In 1992, just east of the present day Convention Center station, a portion of the tunnel beneath Washington Avenue and Broadway collapsed, injuring no one. [2]
In 2023, Metro Transit began a system-wide rehabilitation program that will last up to three years. [12] That spring, Metro began rehabilitating the Downtown Tunnel, including three of its stations: 8th & Pine, Convention Center, and Laclede's Landing. [13]
The tunnel is notable for its brick and stone construction. Its foundations are made up primarily of Aux Vases sandstone while the upper portion of the tunnel is constructed of brick barrel vaults. [2] In the subway stations that were cut into the tunnel, the ends of the platforms are met with brick archways that complement the arch motif used throughout the MetroLink system. [14]

The Eads Bridge is a combined road and railway bridge over the Mississippi River connecting the cities of St. Louis, Missouri, and East St. Louis, Illinois. It is located on the St. Louis riverfront between Laclede's Landing to the north, and the grounds of the Gateway Arch to the south. The bridge is named for its designer and builder, James Buchanan Eads. Work on the bridge began in 1867, and it was completed in 1874. The Eads Bridge was the first bridge across the Mississippi south of the Missouri River. Earlier bridges were located north of the Missouri, where the Mississippi is smaller. None of the earlier bridges survived, which means that the Eads Bridge is also the oldest bridge on the river.
MetroLink is a light rail system that serves the Greater St. Louis area. Operated by Metro Transit in a shared fare system with MetroBus, the two-line, 38-station system runs from St. Louis Lambert International Airport and Shrewsbury in Missouri to Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. Intermediate destinations include downtown Clayton, Forest Park, and downtown St. Louis. It is the only U.S. light rail system to cross state lines.
The MacArthur Bridge is a truss bridge that connects St. Louis, Missouri and East St. Louis, Illinois over the Mississippi River. The bridge was initially called the "St. Louis Municipal Bridge" and known popularly as the "Free Bridge" due to the original lack of tolls. Tolls were added for auto traffic beginning in 1932. In 1942, the bridge was renamed for Douglas MacArthur. The bridge was constructed to break the monopoly of the Terminal Railroad Association, which controlled two other bridges at St. Louis and charged what were viewed as unreasonable tolls.
Metro Transit is an enterprise of the Bi-State Development Agency and operates public transportation services in the St. Louis region. In 2023, the system had an annual ridership of 19,528,200, or about 64,600 per weekday as of the second quarter of 2024.
St. Louis Union Station is a National Historic Landmark and former train station in St. Louis, Missouri, United States. At its 1894 opening, the station was the largest in the world. Traffic peaked at 100,000 people a day in the 1940s. The last Amtrak passenger train left the station in 1978.
The Panhandle Bridge carries the three lines of the Port Authority Light Rail Network across the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The name comes from Pennsylvania Railroad subsidiary Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad, also known as the Panhandle Route, which operated over the bridge.

Somerville is a NJ Transit railroad station on the Raritan Valley Line, located south of the downtown center of Somerville, in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States. The historic station building on the north side of the tracks has been restored and now is used by a law firm. Parking lots are located to the south of the station and there is a tunnel there to access the platforms. Like many of the stations on the Raritan Valley Line, Somerville was not a wheelchair accessible station until December 7, 2010.

The Staten Island Tunnel is an abandoned, incomplete railway and subway tunnel in Staten Island, New York City. It was intended to connect railways on Staten Island to the BMT Fourth Avenue Line of the New York City Subway, in Brooklyn, via a new crossing under the Narrows. Planned to extend 10,400 feet (3,200 m), the tunnel would have been among the world's longest at the time of its planning, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Bi-State Development Agency is an interstate compact established between Missouri and Illinois in 1949. This compact created an organization that has broad powers in seven county-level jurisdictions. Bi-State operates five enterprises, including the Gateway Arch Riverfront, Metro Transit, the St. Louis Downtown Airport, the St. Louis Regional Freightway and the Bi-State Development Research Institute.
