EagleEye is an Earth Observation Satellite in very low Earth orbit that is the first satellite developed and operated by the Polish Space Agency (POLSA), as previous Polish Satellites, PW-Sat, BRITE, and Intuition-1 where designed and operated by private firms.

Development

Development of EagleEye began in April 2020 as a collaboration between a consortium of industrial and scientific organizations led by Creotech, with contributions from the Space Research Centre and Scanway. [2] The basis for EagleEye was largely cannibalized from an earlier Creotech project "HyperSat" which began development in 2017 as a modular platform for small sized satellites. [3]

The satellite was designed locally in Poland from the ground up, however, some components, namely microprocessors, needed to be imported. [2] A military satellite, most of the satellite was developed and designed by the Space Research Centre as it transitioned into the Polish Space Agency, while Creotech assembled most of the parts. [4]

On March 2, 2023, POLSA's vice-president Michal Wiercinski attended Australian International Airshow to win over EagleEye subcontractors as the Polish government viewed the satellite's development as a priority due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as one of the main uses of the satellite would be observing troop movements. [5] However, EagleEye will also have civilian uses to monitor agriculture. [4]

At 50kg, EagleEye is the largest and heaviest Polish satellite. [4] The satellite's resolution is one meter per pixel, and can take images in both visible and infrared light. [4] EagleEye successfully completed it's qualification tests in April 2024. [6]

Mission

EagleEye would be launched on board the SpaceX Falcon 9 Transporter-11 on August 15, 2024. [2] [7] [8]

By August 17, Creotech reported that the first phase of the EagleEye mission was successful, having established communications and received all parameters for further operations. [9]

However, by August 25, Creotech reported that they where failing to properly receive data from EagleEye. [10] By September 3 Creotech reported that they narrowed the issue down to either an improper orbit, or voltage regulators in the satellite's power supply shutting systems off to prevent surges as the solar panels are generating too much power. [11]

Impact

The first Satellite domestically assembled by Polish firms and operated by POLSA, the EagleEye was described as a "breakthrough moment" for the Polish Space Industry, as Poland seeks to become a larger player in the European Space Agency in an effort to create more high-tech jobs. [12] Additionally, it proved Poland had crossed the main entry barrier for spaceflight, in the form of the highly complex engineering needed to make the satellite. [13] [14]

An expendable launch system is a launch vehicle that can be launched only once, after which its components are either destroyed during reentry or discarded in space. ELVs typically consist of several rocket stages that are discarded sequentially as their fuel is exhausted and the vehicle gains altitude and speed. The Space Research Centre is an interdisciplinary research institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It was established in 1976 and began operations in 1977. SRC PAS is the only institute in Poland whose activity is fully dedicated to the research of terrestrial space, the Solar System and the Earth using space technology and satellite techniques.

The Integrated Space Cell was the nodal agency within the Government of India with oversight of the security of its space based military and civilian hardware systems. It was to be jointly operated by all the three services of the Indian Armed Forces, the civilian Defence Research and Development Organisation and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This agency was superseded by Defence Space Agency in 2019.

CryoSat-1, also known as just CryoSat, was a European Space Agency satellite which was lost in a launch failure in 2005. The satellite was launched as part of the European Space Agency's CryoSat mission, which aims to monitor ice in the high latitudes. The second mission satellite, CryoSat-2, was successfully launched in April 2010.

The Mission Extension Vehicle (MEV) is a spacecraft that extends the functional lifetime of another spacecraft through on-orbit satellite servicing. They are 2010s-design small-scale in-space satellite-refueling spacecraft first launched in 2019. The MEV spacecraft grew out of a concept proposed in 2011 by ViviSat, a 50/50 joint venture of aerospace firms US Space and Alliant Techsystems (ATK). The joint venture was created in 2010 for the purpose of designing, producing and operating the MEV program.

PW-Sat is a series of Polish CubeSats designed and built by students at the Warsaw University of Technology in conjunction with the Faculty of Power and Aeronautical Engineering of Warsaw University of Technology, the Space Research Centre of Polish Academy of Sciences, and the European Space Agency. As of January 1, 2024, there have been 2 PW-Sats with a third in development. The first PW-Sat was the first Polish artificial satellite which was launched 13 February 2012 from ELA-1 at Guiana Space Centre aboard Italian-built Vega launch vehicle during its maiden voyage. After their graduation, the team that developed the original PW-Sat have also worked to develop the subsequent missions, establishing a private company named PW-Sat to design and manufacturer the PW-Sats, all of which test novel deorbiting methods, with the overall goal of the program to develop solutions to space debris.
